I am planning on starting tabla this coming winter - I first heard Zakir play on a CD with Bela Fleck called "The Melody of Rhythm." It's a fusion effort with tabla, banjo, bass and symphony and it's brilliant. Since then, I've been completely enchanted with tabla and Indian music. I know I'll never be as good as Zakir because I will not be able to dedicate my life to playing tabla. But that is just fine. I'll get as good as I can and enjoy it as much as possible.
@dmower397 Quote "I know I'll never be as good as Zakir because I will not be able to dedicate my life to playing tabla"
It's like saying if you dedicate your life to football you will become as good as Maradona or Messi. Or if you sprint 100 meters everyday you be as fast as Carl Lewis or Usain Bolt.
World class performers are naturally gifted, they are born with the ability.
No matter how hard or long you try, you will never be as good as Ustad Zakir Hussain.
@BoyBangla "World class performers are naturally gifted, they are born with the ability."
Of course he's gifted, but to credit his skills to a "talent" is insulting to the years and years and years of work he put in to get as good as he is. Any world class performer of any discipline knows that talent is the last tiny percentage of skill. It's the garnish, not the recipe. If no musician ever thought they could compose music as good as Bach's, we'd all be listening to baroque. Let people aspire.
@dmower397 You reasoning is the wrong way round. With years of dedication, you will NEVER become 100m sprint champion. Why don't you spend the rest of your years trying to become Mozart or Monet or Maradona - you will fail.
Talent is not the "last tiny percentage" Talent is the first requirement. Otherwise everyone would become masters of their field. A raw diamond extracted from the dirt is still a unfinished diamond, a smooth polished stone is remains a worthless stone.
@BoyBangla Last or first requirement doesn't matter. It's still just fraction. Nothing is absolute and the truth lies somewhere in between the two arguments, but to say that a person will "never" do something is the same thing as saying that one ever has done it. I believe most people can become a master in their field with the right amount of dedication and hard work and most of all sacrifice. Of course there are exceptions. I guess you can believe what you want to believe, but I've seen it.
@dmower397 I did not say "that a person will never do something", what I said you, first and foremost need talent/aptitude/ability to become world class, regardless of your commitment level.
Just because you may play the drums, doesn't mean with years of dedication you will become world class. Like many other sports, or arts, or music you may be able to play in an amateur fashion, but without natural talent you will not be as good as the world leaders in the respected field. Nuff said.
@BoyBangla What I am saying is that what you call talent is 10% aptitude and 90% hard work. Not everyone will be good at everything (I'm not built for football so can't be a world-class football player) but your comments led me to believe that you think people like Zakir are untouchable. They aren't. He's unbelievably cool, but there are tabla geniuses out there who will never be discovered. And it could be ANYBODY, so you shouldn't go around slapping people down. That's all I'm saying.
@dmower397 What is wrong with you man? Why are you seeing this the wrong way round? World class performers have 90% natural talent/aptitude10% dedication.
With years of dedication, you will NEVER become 100m sprint champion. Why don't you spend the rest of your years trying to become Mozart or Monet?
Yes, one should always aspire to better themselves, but not become deluded in their ability.
Some people may be "good" by "trying" but only the talented become geniuses if they "try"
thank you very much for these really wonderful teaching videos. i am using them like tabla lessons and it's really fun. your old student from san anselmo. jamal
I have seen him many, many times and will continue to do so.
He is a musical phenomena with centuries of tradition behind him. The Master's of Percussion tour was extremely good since he is introducing the new generation of players to audiences outside India. BRAVO!
He has to, it's a pitched percussion so the syllables correspond to the actual notes that should be played, and that they don't have a written tradition
After watching some videos of Ustad Zakir Hussain, I just caught, and I decided to become his student after done my CS studies, but now after this video I'm afraid and I feel that it is more difficult then Rocket Science and might be I can't come up with such shine and bright as Ustad Jee has. ;-(
WIthout a doubt, the most concise, dead on balls accurate explaination of a percussion instrument and about every knook and cranny that deals with the playing of it. This is unparalleled genius. Zakir Hussain = "IL FENOMENO" ....virtuosity is awesome, and ill never get beyond "the Steam Engine".
This is an amazing piece of footage. Fantastic and thanks for sharing this treasure. to start a solo
you start with a basic beat
0) optional start with something like - kate nana x4
1) dha dhin dhin dha, ta dhin dhin dha x4
2) start your improvizations on the basic beat
3) end with something simple - trkt dha x3 dhin

kate na na would be played how
thatoneguycom 3 years ago
there are many ways to play but the way i learned..
ka - hit the big drum (bayan) with a flat palm, should be like a muffled clap
te - hit the small drum (dayan) with last three fingers, should be a sharp flat sound
na - hit the small drum on its ring with your index finger, it should make a ringing sound
