Rhodesian Ridgebacks have a very good temperament and are great dogs as long as the owner trains them well and maintains dominance. Is the character test to see how they behave around new people in new situations or what?

@bonefetish1 A scratch on the head and a tickle under the chin and it's anybody's. I know I am. :-P A pack is not a fixed group. It doesn't start and stop with the family unit. The dog was happy to accept what I would guess is someone very confident around dogs straight into it's pack group.

@Dashdecent That is nonsense! Every dog I have ever met has always been totally loyal to their owner! They would never just go off with a stranger. Many will not even trust strangers until their owner has led them to believe it is ok. Ridgebacks are particularly loyal and protective of their family. They would not just walk off with another person.

@DancinJim You give me a convincing reason as to why the dog went off with a stanger at 1:20 and I'll agree with you. Well maybe just for this dog. Dogs have individual personalities and there is great variation even amonst single breeds. One would have his hand off. Most might behave as you say but some might just behave like this one.

I have a female Rhodesian Ridgeback, she is a brilliant family dog but an excellent watch / guard dog. Did you see how when the man appeared with the sheet over him he kept in between the man and the owner, feinting to keep the man away, too close to his owner at your own peril.

native???? dogs are man-made. there are no native canine breeds in the Americas, except wolves. The native humans in the Americas NEVER domesticated the dog. Only when the Spanish came did dogs.

@NOmeansnoFAN I was wrong, they just found 9800 year old dog remains in The USA. The dog was eaten, and the feel they may have been raised for meat. Or why let the dead pet go to waste. Dogs were domesticated in N.A. either way. Mind you dogs were domesticated over 30000 yrs ago, so maybe they just brought them with them, over the land bridge.

What? Hell no. Rhodesia was where they were first introduced to pack hunt and corner lions by Europeans. N & S America arent where their origins can be traced back to, in the slightest.

They were breed to chase and corner lions in packs. Can be done with mountain lions and bears, but wouldn't suggest it unless you have a large pack to do so.

only one breed effectively track bears, the Karelian bear dog. Other breeds realize they are overwhelmed and flee back to their master. All you need a pissed off bear chasing your dogs back to you.

Black Mouth & Catahoula Curs, Plott hounds, Laikas and Airedales all have hunted bears successfully.

Karelians are basically used on leashes to bark at the bears and scare them off in parks.
