I still have as my favorite version of Route 66 the King Cole Trio's original 1940's version. But in 2nd place in my list of favorite versions of Route 66 is definitely this one from Depeche Mode. This video is wonderful for showing us many views from the last half of the 1980's in the U.S.

love this version. I usually never see the point in doing cover versions as they are rarely as good as the original artist and in fact they often murder a perfectly good song. This works as it is completely their own unique Depeche style. If a rock band hand covered it then what would be the point.
