This accident happened on the 8th august 2008, 6.20 pm during peak hour in one of the most trafficked areas near Mestre (Venice) Italy.
The truck driver was from Eastern Europe and these guys are forced to work too many hours and drive poorly maintained trucks.
Unfortunatly 8 people died, including a young 10 year old boy.
This highways was one of the few that didn’t have the cement barriers, that would most probably have kept the truck in the same direction, it is now completely renewed.
@saintpine: Hopefully you can answer this. Does the official police report say *why* the truck driver lost control of his vehicle? Did he fall asleep behind the wheel? Was he clipped from behind (I tried very hard to find evidence that he was hit by another vehicle, but that doesn't appear to be the case from watching this video). What a crazy accident!

if people are wondering what happened, the trucks left suspension failed and broke off, which made it make a sudden left turn, instantly killing anyone that truck hit on the right lane. notice the car also tailgating the silver 4 door, just shows you that bad things could happen if you tailgate a car, since you dont have enough time to stop. RIP.

WHAT WAS THAT EXPLOSION!! here in Brasil a truck with no break crushed a lot of veicles that was making a rescue operation the jornal got the pictures of the truck hitting the first veicles and the peoples runing for their lives.

Yes that's a very serious question. When a driver falls asleep at the wheel, he keeps going strait when the road veers. Where as that truck made one of the hardest turns I've ever seen in my life, EVER. To turn the wheel that fast would take an insane amount of physical strength by the driver, even with the aid of the power-steering system.

I am italian, and I live at 10 km where this happened. I heard that it was caused by a mechanical fault. Some guys actually heard some peole inside the car screaming before they died. Now, this freeway has 20 kilometers of concrete wall instead of that stupid useless metal bars. RIP for the 7 person who died in this accident
