This just stopped working for me, battery wouldn't charge, so i lost all data on the HDD. be warned. bought the docking station, the remote control for it stopped working within a month, I owned the device for say 4 months, then bam. dead battery. have yet to hear back from archos on a replacement. get the newer versions but BEWARE of the company's support if you are in U.S. This is a company on the Eastern side of the atlantic.

The archos is fucking awesome, only draw backs are its size compared to the touch. But if it doesnt matter whether it can fit in your pocket or not then this is a close call

Best device ever. I got one on clearance a year ago for $60 with the DVR dock. My iPod is sitting in it's dock collecting dust since I got this. Sure you have to download a plugin or two but overall its a flashier machine that is relatively well thought out. Battery life depends on how you set up the backlight when not docked. It should be noted that it's headphone output sounds much better than the ipod. DVR dock has SPDIF out which is great too. Highly recommended.

My Creative player randomly went into recovery mode despite my careful care of it, and I'm convinced the software makes this happen on purpose!! the Archos series is a good one for you if you want to store a lot of files, a PSP does it fine too, now currently there is nothing that is portal and plays Blu-ray unless you want a laptop. and for files that cant be played on some multimedia player you can always convert the file into something that can be read.

also depends on you price range.

no to go on the internet you need to buy the extra software which is stupid because why give you internet if you cant use unless you buy the extra? it can only connect to wifi not like G3 or Edge. However if you search really deep you can fine the software for free, like a copy.

My 504 is fitted with a 320BG H/D. I can do this because I never upgrade the firmware from version 1.2. At around version 1.4 Archos made a change to the 504 which locked the drive to the machine.

I convert all my films to xvid at 352x240 with a audio bit rate of 96 and a frame rate of 25fps This keeps all my film under 400MB and still gives me full screen

I have had mine 504 now for 2 years +. How long the battery lasts. After watching two full length feature films and a couple of hours of listening to music I switch it off. Reference changing the battery, it takes around 5 seconds. Just hold the battery switch down which is on the side and slide the battery out then slide another one in "Simple"

This is a pretty shitty review, inaccurate and his major points were neglecting to mention the price tag which comes with the extras, I have had this for nearly a year and it's great, wether it's reading pdf ebooks on slow work days, films or tv show on the bus, mp3 of course, and learning another language combining the pdfs, video and mp3's.

Takes a usb from my phone K770i, and camera P3. Easy and fast response times, it has flaws but not many if you treat it right.

Not sure how that'd help xD You can't take the battery out, and mine had a battery life of like two hours the first couple of weeks that I used it... (and that was for music only, not even for movies) couldn't have been because the battery was too old! It's too bad really, because Archos is the only portable media player with a harddrive size that rivals the iPod, wish they'd done a better job.

If you bought a refurbished unit within the last 6 months, I'd check with Archos customer service to see if they can replace the unit for you. Refurbed mp3 players sometimes have lower battery life than new players.

u have to do that with almost everything, iPods always need new battery after 18 Months (You have to call apple and they send you a special do-it-yourself kit and a new battery in the kit for $50 or you can take it to apple for $200)

The difference between the 504 and 604 is that the 504 uses 2.5" HD and the 604 uses 1.8" HD.

The 604 is therefore smaller/slimmer.

i have also had the Archos 504 for around one year. the only problem with it is that there is very little third party support. What i mean by that is, the ipod mp3 players have a plethora of third party hardware devices that are compatible with it. the Archos has very few that i have found. All around i have loved that thing like it was my own child(jk).

You really can't compare this to an ipod because they are in two totally different leagues. The archos is made primarily for video (hence pvp). The ipod is made primarily for music but it will do video and quite nicely at that. But the archos kills the ipod and pretty much anything else as far as video goes.

Yes, but you'll need to do the following:

1. Use something to convert YouTube's FLV video files to MPEG.

2. Use the Archos inbcluded software to convert the MPEG to the type that the device can play.
