I was thinking about going for the Feather Japanese Straight Handle Razor, but this one can be dismantled and kind of be transformed into a straight handle one, so two razors in one...
What do you think about that?
Great videos, very inspiring and helpfull for a beginner (me)...
very. very. cool! I've never watched or experienced straight blade shaving. I kind of winced every time you'd start to shave and then start back into the conversation expecting you to cut yourself. anyway, awesome job! looks like you have a bunch of cool vids!!
Thanks for the tip about stretching the skin as you move downward toward the jawline -- I've always had irritation around that area and while straight shaving has helped somewhat I'm going to give this method a try. Your videos are always really helpful. Keep em' comin!
Takes a real man to upload a tutorial about shaving even though he cut himself on camera. He didn't retake or cut it (no pun intended), just left it in.
I like that you put so much information on shaving with a straight razor. Its a big help for me as I am planning on buying what I need to get started and to take care of my razor and skin. thanks.
Very good video, thank you, I've gotten better already. Only 2 nicks this time! Using quality razors, strops, hones, brushes and soap, really makes a big difference, I'm building up a good collection, bit by bit rather than getting a load of cheap stuff all at once.
Sometimes with the lower priced straight razors they don't have or keep a keen enough edge to provide you with a smooth shave and no pulling or tugging on the whiskers.
Check out some of my other videos and you'll see a Straight Razor holder hanging on the door behind me which holds about 30 Straight Razors.
In this video, I'm using a Feather No-Sharpen Folding Straight Razor...
It uses Feather replaceable blades so it enables you to perform a super-close straight razor shave without needing to perform any honing or stropping as you would a standard solid blade straight razor.
I read somewhere that to really get a close shave with a straight, you should combine the usual motion of the pass with a very slight sything (slicing) motion, this will give you the closest shave. Are you doing that here as well?
I'm familiar with the motion you are speaking of, although I'm not using it with this razor...
This razor is one of the Feather No -Sharpen replaceable blade razors. It is so sharp that just a short steady stroke removes the beard with no problem.
I do perform that motion at times when shaving with a standard blade straight razor, especially when going against the grain.
Check out my Boker Edelweiss video and you will catch a glimpse of it there.
Most excellent, as a little guy I would watch my Grandfather shave ,he always had a very close and smooth shave , only now can I appreciate what skill was involved.... I think I'm going to give it a go with his razor it's a Kershaw, gotta be at least 50 years old...
When shaving with a DE Safety Razor I use my right hand throughout the entire process.
With a Straight Razor I find it easier to use my left hand on the left side of my face (then on the right side of my neck) to get the proper blade angle.
Whatever method you use that is comfortable and allows you to complete a shave that pleases you is the best way to do it!
spent quite a long time already checking out straight razor videos for instruction....you've done a great job explaining technique and general know-how, thanks! Can't wait to get a straight razor of my own and try it out (without tearing my face up!). What brand of razor do you usually use? I'm in france for the moment, maybe they have some well made european one's out here...
Thiers-Issard is located in France and they make splendid straight razors that, if purchased new will be delivered to you in ready to shave condition, honed and stropped to perfection!
Aside from that, you could try ebay, but make sure your razor comes honed in ready-to shave condition.
Be sure to clean it with alcohol or Barbicide before it touches your skin and store it in a safe place. SAFETY FIRST!
I use several razors, from early 1900's to present
I notice you put that stick on you face to stop the bleeding, is that what the alum block is for as well?

It takes a little while to become proficient with the left or whichever is the non-dominant hand.
It sounds like you should stay with the safety razor if that's what you feel comfortable with!
If the right hand gets the job done, , then stick with that!

Whats up Mate!
Since your Straight Razor wasn't up to snuff, maybe you want to try out a Shavette by Parker or Dovo.....
Only about $20-$30 US and you can get a pretty good shave from them.
I was pleasantly surprised by their performance!
