Solid snake is a clone of big boss. Liquid snake was too, but he was killed in the first game. Liquids arm was grafted onto ocelot's body, and took over his mind.

This Snake is one of Big Boss's clones made to age faster for specific reasons. He was created by the Patriots because the Patriots viewed Big Boss as one of the best soldiers of all time. Hideo may make a game that is completely ass backwards in twists, conspiracies and utterly illogical, but holy God he knows how to make one emotional boss battle. This was the crescendo that was built up from MGS1 for me. I may have hated the ending, but this boss battle was well worth the wait.

A lot of people here seem to think that Ocelot was 'possessed' by Liquid's arm. This is not the case. Yes he had the arm grafted on, but the reason he behaved as Liquid was part of a plan between Ocelot, Big Boss and EVA to stop the Patriots and bring down the System. By brainwashing himself and using hypnosis to essentially be Liquid, Ocelot knew he would stand a better chance of getting inside to end the Patriots' control (by taking out JD) as the Patriots would be less suspicious of Liquid.

It was Ocelot the whole time, but he had purposefully convinced himself he was Liquid.

Might be a bit of a silly explanation, but Kojima was practically forced to make MGS4 so he wanted to tie up every loose end so that he wouldn't have to make yet another one.

They like brothers, so fighting is the closest thing the could do. Kojima himself would give us the best ending and a way to kick liquids ass...

The awesome thing about Snake's lifebar reading "Naked Snake" on it, is that this is EXACTLY how Big Boss and Ocelot would've wanted to end their rivalry; both men, at the twilight of their years, having one final throwdown. But because of Zero and the Patriots, both men were denied this, so Ocelot decides to settle for Big Boss's successor.

what i really like about this fight is what it represents. ocelot's plot has already been foiled and snake has completed his final mission. All their lives they've been fighting to change the world, for better or for worse, but now they realize they can't change the world anymore; that their time is over. So they decide to fight it out one last time. absolutely no consequence in the grand scale of things, even if snake had died ocelot still would've lost. just two old men duking it out.
