i don't even understand what they are saying and i cried my eyes out. such raw emotion coming through. this is the first i have heard by sigur ros, but they now have yet another fan :)
why thumbs down?... i think you gave it a good credit...
i personally think this is pure emotion, authentic feeling, and that is what music is about.. sadly nowadays audience and bands have forgotten that important fact... thats way they pay to go and see Lady Gaga...
Every time I hear this I know that the world can be a good place. This is music for the post-capitalist-save-the-planet- world. A true epic that only Sigur Ros have the sheer guts to produce. Like Amiina and Lee Hazlewood's Hill at the Top of the World, It should be mandatory for us all to stop, listen and reflect to this song every single day.
Sure. Capitalism, while by no means perfect, stimulates growth of enterprise and technology, creates jobs, and just generally contributes to making the world a better place. The poorest people in the Western world live better than royalty did a hundred years ago because of it.
Of course, it needs to be tempered by personal moral responsibility and some amount of regulation, but it's a shame that one of the most beneficial ideas in history is used as a dirty word by some who don't understand it.
i have to admit, i dont like the sound of this 'waiting room'. you would have thought after 3 score and ten down here, that having to wait further is not something my parents signed up for with me. that said, i suppose i should add the pre-requisite comment about how it wouldnt be so bad in this 'waiting room' you speak of if this was playing. oh, and their best album is agaetis byrjun, always glad to help :o)
I don't think Sigur Ros using strings is the same as other bands. The strings have always (always) been there for Sigur Ros. It's a part of their music. It's not like a guitar/bass/drum band like The Beatles just throwing strings in there. They have them in almost all of their songs, and they are perfect.
This is a great song for the most part, but I don't like the ending. It annoys me when bands/producers try to make a song seem more "powerful" by bringing in huge masses of orchestras and choirs...it's such a cliché. It didn't work on the Beatle's "Long and Winding Road" or Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and it doesn't work here either.
What's so "weird" about it? I'm hardly the only one who feels this way about those kinds of arrangements...many critics have criticized songs that rely on orchestral bombast and overwrought production techniques.
Not argumenting back and assuming that everyone thinks the same way you do is pretty "dumb" also.
Well, I am sorry for the rather impulsive reply yesterday. You think of the use of orchestral arrangements as a productional technique for producing energy. I don't understand why you rely your opinion to what musical critics have stated, instead of listening to the music, and enjoying the feelings Sigur Rós wants to give you. Obviously, there's no "trying" to make the song seem more powerful behind this creation, it is an honest output of emotions, and not to be discussed as an agentmean
I don't necessarily rely on what critics think, I felt that way the first time I heard the ending. I guess it's just a cliché that I've heard too many times in order to be moved by that kind of thing anymore.
I noticed you said "...enjoying the feelings Sigur Rós *wants* to give you." In a way, that's the problem -- it's a contrived attempt at getting a big mess of tears out of their listeners by ending the song that way.
I understand your point here. However, I do not agree. To me it is commonly seen in a Sigur Rós song, that the energic and feeling expression progress a lot throughout the songs, and this song is no different. When the song begins to rise in vigour, it is obviously to mark the rise of emotions in the message of the song. It is a matter of taste if you feel like all these huge walls of massive soundscapes are either too much of the good stuff, or if it suits the music. To me it does.
agreed. i listened to this song in the car without the preconception of either having read the reviews or even being a particular fan (i came to them late). and of course the words were just sounds to these english ears.
anyway, at about 7'45 i had to pull over. i just couldn't see properly for tears. powerful, powerful stuff.
Song of the decade? Love the black and white then the colour of the violin- just like Iceland- monochrome landscape then lush pasture. Great vid. Thanks from a Sigur Ros and Iceland lover. Want to return.
Bottom line is, Sigur Rós are probably the best musicians ever to exist. No band gets to me like they do. Some might not want to admit it, but they know it inside.
It's a shame a band like this doesn't get as much attention Britney Spears or something like that. I mean the good kind of attention. They deserve the best :]
The power of the music lies in the fact that it's relatively unknown. If you'd hear this song 10 times a day, you'd get bored of it, and that would be shame of the music.
Making CD's should be their most commercial act :p.
So you're saying that britney spears songs would be better if her music was more unknown?
I used to listen Pink Floyd The Wall repeatedly and essentially got enough of it, but it still is great music and i listen to it occationally. Great music never makes me bored because it's power relies in emotion it brings.
Last few days I find my self returning again and again to this song. Some times tears float. Just a thank you guys. Good to know that there are gentle souls around...
When I heard this magestic song, I remember other songs like Andvari or Svo Hljott that are so similars, with an intensive feeling in their notes, they makes you cry, thinking about those days... God bless sigur ros, is good to think that exists a band who compose songs with really human feeling.
Is good to know, and you know what? the other day I was playing my piano, and then I found the notes of this song, so I can play it by myself and sing it too, it is so easy to play, I was so excited that day. Maybe someday I'll upload a vide with a cover of Ara batur by me but without the orchestra.
dam but i love these guys, there is nothing better than a bottle of wine, a large joint, an kicking back to look at the ocean.......while past memories come an go huh. esp love the bit at 3min....sounds like i saw u
I would like to give you a hug! I thought exactly the same! If you connect someone with that part, you have to cry. This is the best song on the new album, next to festival, and for me, the best song by sigur ros till now (and the best song I've ever heard).
I was bawling the first time I heard it by the end. What the hell does Sigur Ros do to us? This is not the first time I've cried with a song made by them.
This only shows you how good they are at transmitting emotions

Why are saving the planet and capatlism mutually exclusive?
You might be surprised. One of these days, capatalism could just save the world. ;) The alternative almost certainly won't.

Thank you.
