i see how the Lakers lost this game one their minds wasn't in it two i don't think wills reed had anything to do with it the fans was too much into it three too many three points by the knicks was hit and too many turnovers by the Lakers. wow
Thank you for taking me back to a wonderful time in my life. As a kid growing up in New York 1970 was a great year as the Knicks put it all together with great defense, team work and shooting. Great to see Chris Schenkel and Howard Cosell.
Imagine Wilt Chamberlain in the NBA today. Imagine the havoc the Big Dipper would wreak, Is there anyone who could guard him? (said as a Knicks fan) Annd let's not forget about his rebounding, passing (the only center who has ever led the league in assists) and defensive skills.
Watch where the Knicks were shooting from. They were nailing threes without the line there. Guys like DeBusschere and Cazzie Russell would have had a lot of fun today. And no one plays defense like them today. What Clyde would have done with some of the players with the high dribbles today is scary. The 69-70 Knicks will always be my favorite team in any sport.
@1400deadwood I believe New York was blacked-out from a live telecast, but the network pressured the Knicks to allow WABC-TV New York to show the entire game on tape at 11:30 P.M.
I believe that the on West Coast, including Los Angeles, the game was shown at 9 P.M. Pacific time, a three-hour delay, so the game could be seen in prime-time in all of the country.
The game was so much better without a 3-point line. Nowadays everyone just chucks 3s every two seconds. If I wanted to see so many chucks I'd go to the local park.
@vccstudents Willis and Clyde are the two greatest players in Knicks history. I really respect Ewing, but they have something he doesn't - two championship rings.
And the game that really turned this series in the Knicks' favor for game 5. Reed injured in first quarter, down by 16 at one point, and they pull a frantic comeback. The must inexplicable turnaround imaginable. And THAT game was never televised. Although it's now on YouTube, which I got to finally see 40 years after it happened. Wonderful!
I thank you, too. I was 16 and living in the NYC area when this game was played, and home games were not televised back then. The one exception they made for this game was they delayed it until midnight, but you already knew the result. Frazier was really the MVP, but I've never heard him complain. 36 points, 19 assists, 7 rebounds (for a guard). Every starter on that team was devoted to the concept of team play.
@streglia i lived through those dumb ass black out laws.
imagine never seeing the garden games from this series or even the jets/raiders championship game from 1968! you had to go to a location like 90 miles from nyc. this game could of been seen live on channel 8 in hartford, conn. the jets game could of been seen live in channel 30 in conn: the nbc affiliate!
I've been waiting 41 years for this. Back in 69-60 i had started to watch the Knicks during what must have been their 18 game winning streak. So i got spoiled thinking they never lost (I've since learned better). but i did not know anything about playoffs. my family had just gotten off the boat (as they used to say) a few years earlier so i didn't watch this game.
@TheStevebeast So would everyone else. Unfortunately, that happened in an era when not all games were taped; it was expensive, and only the television studios had the equipment to do it, as well as having professional sportscasters. The 100 point game exists only in the memory of the people who were in attendance that day to see it. The rest of us can only read about it. There is no video footage of it, anywhere.
@nitestar95 same with the 1973 finals. only 20 secs. of the ABC broadcast from the entire 5 games exist. tho, apparently, that was on purpose.roone arledge reportedly wasn't pleased the NBA left for CBS, so he may have gotten rid of that footage just out of spite
@BoArnberg - that sleepy look was just a disguise! Indeed, he was a massive part of the Knicks effort with 18.6 PPG, 4.3 APG with good defense. He was perfect for the Coach Holzman game plan.
@1400deadwood Dick Barnett was a great all-around player. He was so much more than The Fall Back Baby Jumper, as deadly as it was. He was an incredibly smart player.

Don't forget that this was a great T E A M. That was the difference. But I also liked the 1973 team that had Earl the Pearl Monore.

Dave Stallworth of the Knicks suffered a heart attack at age 24. Thankfully, he enjoyed a full recovery and remains alive & well at age 70.

Game was not broadcasted live on local TV that night. We saw it later on. What a time that was for sports in NYC!

I remember this game.
I was a Knicks fan back then.
I went on to become a Nets fan (ABA) because of Dr. J.
Now, I live in L.A. and follow the Lakers.
My favorite sports team is the NY Giants.
As for this video, thanks for the memories.
