All empires become rich at the suffering of the mass. However, if you compare what the British left for the countries they colonized, then I think these colonizers should be acquitted from many traditional criticisms-they built societies, left law and order, and stimulated commerce. The French, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. all left chaos and continued exploitation to this day.

for what ever reason it is, colonialism is present in every society. in india, before British arrived there was a more oppressive colonialism by some stupid upper castes. therefore it is not just good to blame british that they have distorted the beautiful well ordered society for their gains.remember 'sati'..... dalit opperession... it goes on and on.

I have tough time going into the brains of these mediocre scholars (Romila) , or who pretends as scholars. we as a nation must get after these pseudo-intellectuals. Don't go by what she is saying. She has distorted history of India for so long by being in position of academic power. She does not know what rationality is. Her guide when she did her higher ed (Basham) did change his views (that is what rationalism is about) when overwhelming evidence was presented against AIT.
