  • fuck, she was so hot back then. She's still hot but god, that whole tomboy look...omg

  • Chan Marshall, TIm Foljahn and Steve Shelley put out three excellent, raw albums together as Cat Power. I wish they would give us at least one more!

  • i was just gonna say, is that Steve Shelley? but i see lots of people have confirmed it is

  • This is too incredible.Chan's earlier sound is mystifying.

  • Thank you ever so much for posting this. Favorite Cat Power Song of alot of great songs.

reminds me of many great early perfomances I got to see in NYC. She was so young, raw and talented, still is just a little more grown up and polished now....but still a fucking amazing talent and presence

  • beauty

  • dude on the drums is from Sonic Youth !

  • @GuNZfRee1 the guitar guy is wearing a Sonic youth shirt JANE shirt

  • @GuNZfRee1 Steve Shelley. respect for recognizing amazing talent and getting down with it...

  • hmmm, im feeling sad, to know, that ife missed 10 years of good music experience

since yesterday, i try to listen to every song she ever made

each one is touching my hard, sometimes so badly, that holding of my tears is hard work

  • Less guitar, more skin. Thats what I say.

  • She's a fine girl.

  • she can stand sideways anytime.

  • @isteppedoff haha

  • I think that this lady is a dingbat. Jesus saves..

  • @bohemianrye I think your crazy your voicing a complete idiotic statement about someone whom you know nothing about!

  • @bohemianrye

kudos for use of the word 'dingbat'!

  • this live is amazing

  • This is the hell of a song, haunts me since 1997...

  • i want to be buried with this video.

  • I love the flying V--so grunge and hair band--and then she starts to sing and its all chrissy hynde--too bad she didn't keep this edge.

  • Her voice is Jesus! Especially at 1:18.

  • Holy shit! She's just so fucking good; I can't contain myself! And look how young......omg! My dream-wife!

  • she reminds me of a more chill Karen O

  • oh my, poor little chan, here she looks more damaged than ever

  • <3 Cat <3 and thanks 4 sharing

  • She's incredible! Why won't she marry me?

  • I keep reading how "awesome" was her performance. Thing is, she seems to me, that she's in the deepest pain. That's part of why I love her early work. But actually, listening to "this other Chan Marshall" makes me quite uncomfortable at times... Part pleasure, part pain. She's incredibly touching, and to me as near as what Billie Holiday could which is..a fucking lot.

  • holy shit how young was she here?

  • If she was dead already, she'll be as great as kurt cobain.

    But, fortunatelly, her voice remains.

  • i know what you've been through and i know where you've been. i understand. and i love you even more then you can know!!

  • what year was this?

  • This could quite possibly be the best recording ever, I can't get enough of it. Totally obsessed

  • Jackson Jesse i got your son in me

  • 2:26

  • She IS the hottest woman I have ever laid eyes on.

  • outstanding.

  • wow...great performance!

  • mmm I want her.

  • incredible, i miss the early days of mrs. marshall

  • pffff thanks for the link :D!!!!!!

  • At this time she were great acting live.... But not now.

  • This is fucking awesome.

  • Look the Sonic youth's drummer. amazing.

esse cara é foda steve shelliey do Sonic youth.

    cat power e FODA!!!

  • @vingadores157 Luv your comment!

  • @vingadores157 : u rule!

  • yeah, me too now. Dang.

  • Host slur win 0:00 - 0:02

  • this artist is beyond...

  • This song is mesmerizing

  • Isn't she kinda stressed?

  • This is a very nice live performance. She's got a great voice on this one.

  • She is so unbelievable. I am totally in love with Chan. She had and still has such an incredible original artistic style. In the future, she will be considered one of the most talented and outstanding singer/song writers of all time. She is totally unappreciated. She is a goddess. That is a fact.

XXXOOOXXX Chan, you are the absolute GREATEST!!!

  • Great song, great talent. hope she comes back to this utter lack of pretentions in appearance and music

  • Best video ever. She is my favorite female artist.

Dude below me, I know exactly what you mean about the shivers.

  • Shivers down my spine...

Anyone knows who the guitarist is ?

  • I assume the guitarist is Tim Foljahn, since Steve Shelley is behind the drums. His face is not clear to me because of the lighting alas. BTW, my understanding is the reason she's using the borrowed Flying V is because her beloved SIlvertone was held up in Customs.

I think Chan was 23 or 24 when this video was made. And *way* out of her comfort zone...

  • Wow! This version is better than the What Would the Community Think one.

I've been knowing Cat Power for 12 years now and I'm still obsessed with all the albums before Juke Box).

Thank you Chan, you are... THE GREATEST

  • Steve Shelley says Chan wasn't high and hated drugs but was a strange (but very talented) kid naturally. Chan can seem high in interviews because of her ADHD but the reason she seems sort of out of it here is because she's having a full blown PTSD panic/anxiety attack at her first time in a real spotlight and trying to sing through it. Not fun. Been there, done that, got through it, didn't enjoy it much. Oh - Cat Power's style predates Nirvana. Steve Shelley. Sonic Youth. Duh.

  • sounds like PJ Harvey...and that's a compliment!

  • yea she does...but the way she sings now is much more breathy.....shes changed quite a bit....sings more calmly, longer hair, doesn't have as much depression, obviously shes older, but she still looks really really young for her age, shes a really interesting person

  • Listening to a playlist, didn't even realise this was live until I glanced at the screen.

  • same actually!

  • She kind of sounds like Dolores O'riordan at 1:18

  • You couldn't be more wrong.

  • i just cannot get enough of this either

  • I love this song I wish she could sing this one again!

  • killer gig

  • unquestionably magnificent !!!

  • i'm so glad this vid is back up, i was so pissed when it was gone. thanks!

  • Yep, this is so much better than the album version.

  • achingly beautiful.

  • Incredible. I can watch this over and over. She blows everyone out of the water on this song.

  • I honestly think I've watched it 100 times.

  • maybe 300 times! Especially when drunk... much love

  • Uno de los mejores temas de Chan, qué buen video!!

  • i'm a little obsessed with this

  • me too

  • ME TOO

  • @initialfriend85 only a little ?

  • @initialfriend85 you never get tired of listening and watching her, she is addictive.

  • i dig the short hair look

    she is so talented

    and super hot

  • that song rocks to the max. did cat power write it? or maybe they righted it,,, not sure.... awsome power all the same

  • I am 40 years old and have seen and heart a lot of music in my time BUT i have to say this is one of the best female performances EVER... fantastic song and a stunningly beautiful woman

  • She's amazingly beautiful. She looks like Kurt Cobain as a girl in this performance, so moving.

  • It is Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar on guitar and Steve Shelley on drums.

  • I thought it was steve shelley!

  • No it's not, she's said already that it has to do with her abortion. Jackson and Jesse are Patti Smith's kids. Jesse Jackson's kid and the whole scandal happened after she wrote the song.

  • nice

  • if you read her new biography, she's said in interviews that it IS about her abortion

  • That's what I said, mate...

  • Biography?

  • i was just agreeing with you.

  • Yep that's definitely what it's about - I read that article too!

  • Absoulutley amazing!

  • what exactly is this song about?

  • damn this is great.

  • steve shelley from sonic youth!

  • i didn't realise it was him!

and is that Butch Vig on guitar, or just someone who happens to look like him?

  • Steeeeeeve!

  • Should be in the Smithsonian. Conceptual art. It will take one hundred years for fools to realize the sublime. How deep can you go into emotional music? Raw and powerful. Can you see, behind those bangs, sans makeup or facade, one of the most beautiful women in history?

  • haha

  • @NarisTorquere you dickhead

  • @NarisTorquere yes, agreed, and amazing artist, makes the make-up, plucking and all the rest so sad...

  • She's so pretty. Gosh.

  • Unbelievably gorgeous and haunting.

  • great! thanks for the video!!!!!!!!

  • poutzikos pos pas? i am talking to u BITISRAD......

  • this was the first cat power song I heard. It was on the what's up matador compilation, and after a few listens, I had to get What Would the Community Think. She's incredible!

  • Haha! Same here.

    She's the greatest :)

  • i love this song!:)

  • This performance is so full of win! I love it better than the original album version

  • thank to you.

in this late 90's, i think we, french people can listen good music, because of "Bernard Lenoir" on the radio "France Inter" (and his "Black session").

Some groups had their best success in france like BlondeRedhead...

  • i love this video

  • Thanks for this version!

  • any input on what u think this songs means

  • poutzikos pos pas?

  • very beautiful!

  • beautiful and raw.

  • This is powerfull. I really get sucked in watching this.

    Wow amazing video.

  • this is painful to watch in a good way

  • thanks so much- it killed me when this was taken down originally.

  • if you question, it was on french tv show called "Nulle Part Ailleurs" (NPA) on late 90's

    probably 96 or 97

in the same show, once, i saw alison david with red snapper (my second smash !)

  • I like it.

She's cute as fuck in this video, too.

  • Hey, Sonic Youth, yeah! That Kim Gordon...

  • Yes that is Steve Shelly from Sonic youth

  • AAAGGGGHHHH, its gone!!!! Fortunately I saved it.

  • Wow...she lost some weight. Awesome music and she's so pretty...

    5 stars

  • she reminds me of my 10 year old nephew

  • Some music is art. Some music is medicine for the artist. Some are both. This is very much the both. She, also, happens to be beautiful at the same time.

  • is he the sonic youth^s drummer?!!!

  • In deed

  • thank you!

  • wow stevie on drum!

  • i love this song!:)

  • I...lol

  • Sacred Chan, That's what meant to type, Peace

    Later, E

  • I've been playing guitar for sixteen years. This groove of song, and some punk is what has inspired me. I play more diverse styles of music now. This sound is the heart of my musical experience. I will always have sacres respect for Chan. Always. If anyone wants to jam with me to see if I'm lying, then let me know.

    Peace.

  • This is sooo..... different... especially from new cat power. She looks like a little kid in this, its really cute

  • it was from 1996 or 97

she was in her early twenties

  • Atemberaubend, umwerfend, leidenschaftlich...

  • Coked up hottie.

I miss the old Chan immensely. Her music used to be pure, filthy, raw emotion which scraped through your eardrums and left you feeling distinctly uncomfortable. Oh well, her new stuff can't exactly detract from the fact she made four stunning ablums and who am I, albumless creature, to judge?

Songs like Not What You Want, Great Expectations, King Rides By and Water & Air are ones I would recommend for feeling the real Cat Power at her best.

  • I'd have to add to that a couple that are slightly more "upbeat", but every bit as raw: Naked if I Want To, Rockets, and actually, one of her newer covers: Breathless. Sure, we're all glad she's happier (and actually finishing shows) these days, but the musical landscape is seriously missing the blunt rawness she showed in her earlier recordings. I wish I could find that somewhere else, but two of my favorite artists (Modest Mouse, and Cat Power) have lost it in their music.

  • So much raw emotion, beautiful. She is so talented.

  • merci beaucoup, ça fait des années que je cherche ce live que j'ai vu en 1996 ...

a tout hasard, je cherche le live npa de la même époque des red snapper avec alison david

  • the best.

  • I love this so much better than the CD version.

  • un-real. This makes me crazy.

  • That's Steve Shelley on the drums right?

  • mm261989 - yes, right you are.

  • :) i love this song :D:D:D

  • She makes great music for listening to by yourself.

  • I love this version of the song...thanks for posting it.

  • kurt cobain did live with physical and emotional pain any artists whos is on the spotlight pressure may react the same we are all human man i love you chan marshall

  • OMG ,she song perfectly in this song,it seems to be the cd voices ,she's great

  • this is really good, really really good.

  • i just enjoy the song, and her voice. No strings.

  • blablabla

i just say she has the same 'vibe' as nirvana style (tempo , intonation , tembre)

and i read here that she could faked it (because its +- the same time , dunno i dont have time to search it up or to find the truth now)

i like the song too :)

    so no offence

  • Agreed. It seems like Jukebox was her palette cleanser (much like The Covers Record was), so she could come back different again. I'm excited to see what her new material will sound like once the Jukebox tour is done and she gets to writing and recording.

  • what the hell do you any of you know about art or music to say shes copying, youre all morons who have no inclination as to the thought or feeling that is put into work, that doesnt mean i think i do im just saying youre all morons and its annoying and pretentious, just really vulgar

  • This is the best versions of one of the greatest songs ever.

  • she's drunk.

  • who cares

  • so am I

    *hic*

  • John: Did my homework as instructed. I did like this, although Cat looks a tad out of it. What the HECK is she playing? Hasn't she changed over the years? You know, I kind of like the whole post-punk thing she has going here. But then, I am a child of the 80's. Well, not a child, but you know what I mean... - M.L.

  • "What the HECK is she playing?"

    Gibson Flying V.

  • es la mejor!! como se puede ser tan guapa y original a la vez!!!

is the best singer in all the entire world

  • Well, maybe she was trying to act like Cobain, but her music was much more original than now.

  • I miss the depressed and alcohol Chan Marshall. Now, I cannot identify with her anymore =(

  • *alcoholic

  • hehehee

  • that's not nice, you should be happy for her and not be so selfish

  • very bizarre. I like this old school cat power. raw and strange. nice.

  • man i love this vid. chan marshall is my favorite. great song, great lyrics
