Thank you ever so much for posting this. Favorite Cat Power Song of alot of great songs.
reminds me of many great early perfomances I got to see in NYC. She was so young, raw and talented, still is just a little more grown up and polished now....but still a fucking amazing talent and presence
I keep reading how "awesome" was her performance. Thing is, she seems to me, that she's in the deepest pain. That's part of why I love her early work. But actually, listening to "this other Chan Marshall" makes me quite uncomfortable at times... Part pleasure, part pain. She's incredibly touching, and to me as near as what Billie Holiday could which is..a fucking lot.
She is so unbelievable. I am totally in love with Chan. She had and still has such an incredible original artistic style. In the future, she will be considered one of the most talented and outstanding singer/song writers of all time. She is totally unappreciated. She is a goddess. That is a fact.
I assume the guitarist is Tim Foljahn, since Steve Shelley is behind the drums. His face is not clear to me because of the lighting alas. BTW, my understanding is the reason she's using the borrowed Flying V is because her beloved SIlvertone was held up in Customs.
I think Chan was 23 or 24 when this video was made. And *way* out of her comfort zone...
Steve Shelley says Chan wasn't high and hated drugs but was a strange (but very talented) kid naturally. Chan can seem high in interviews because of her ADHD but the reason she seems sort of out of it here is because she's having a full blown PTSD panic/anxiety attack at her first time in a real spotlight and trying to sing through it. Not fun. Been there, done that, got through it, didn't enjoy it much. Oh - Cat Power's style predates Nirvana. Steve Shelley. Sonic Youth. Duh.
yea she does...but the way she sings now is much more breathy.....shes changed quite a bit....sings more calmly, longer hair, doesn't have as much depression, obviously shes older, but she still looks really really young for her age, shes a really interesting person
I am 40 years old and have seen and heart a lot of music in my time BUT i have to say this is one of the best female performances EVER... fantastic song and a stunningly beautiful woman
No it's not, she's said already that it has to do with her abortion. Jackson and Jesse are Patti Smith's kids. Jesse Jackson's kid and the whole scandal happened after she wrote the song.
Should be in the Smithsonian. Conceptual art. It will take one hundred years for fools to realize the sublime. How deep can you go into emotional music? Raw and powerful. Can you see, behind those bangs, sans makeup or facade, one of the most beautiful women in history?
this was the first cat power song I heard. It was on the what's up matador compilation, and after a few listens, I had to get What Would the Community Think. She's incredible!

Some music is art. Some music is medicine for the artist. Some are both. This is very much the both. She, also, happens to be beautiful at the same time.
I've been playing guitar for sixteen years. This groove of song, and some punk is what has inspired me. I play more diverse styles of music now. This sound is the heart of my musical experience. I will always have sacres respect for Chan. Always. If anyone wants to jam with me to see if I'm lying, then let me know.

Songs like Not What You Want, Great Expectations, King Rides By and Water & Air are ones I would recommend for feeling the real Cat Power at her best.
I'd have to add to that a couple that are slightly more "upbeat", but every bit as raw: Naked if I Want To, Rockets, and actually, one of her newer covers: Breathless. Sure, we're all glad she's happier (and actually finishing shows) these days, but the musical landscape is seriously missing the blunt rawness she showed in her earlier recordings. I wish I could find that somewhere else, but two of my favorite artists (Modest Mouse, and Cat Power) have lost it in their music.
kurt cobain did live with physical and emotional pain any artists whos is on the spotlight pressure may react the same we are all human man i love you chan marshall
