I agree with you. He is a very down to earth, fun loving guy, who happens to have a gorgeous voice.

In some way, he reminds me of Mario Lanza, also a raw natural talent, never too refined, but oh so wonderful to listen to. Rolando has gotten some undeserved bad press, because he gave too much of himself and could have hurt his voice in the long run. After some time off he is back, better than ever.

Para quienes comparan a Villazon con Domingo, estan a años luz de distancia, su propia historia lo demuestra, Domingo a sus casi 70 sigue cantando y maravillandonos y Rolando a sus treinta y pico ya se esta quedando mudo. Villazon is suffering from the same throatiness as lots of other hispanic tenors (there are exceptions though). Above all, what Villazon really suffers from is a solid technique which he sorely lacks. His upper register is feeble at best. Anything above and F# is painful to listen.

This fellow has GREAT commitment. However, there *is* stress in the tone production: some vowels are more effortful than others. The upper lip, the over extended jaw, and the tension in the forehead that translates into tension in the back of the mouth . . .youth is getting him through this! You can see why he developed trouble later on. I hope he fixes it because there is something beautiful, heartfelt, and unprotected in his singing that you don't often get to see!
