ok jojo29 but there are good dive story sites on the web also. Try the myscubastory site. They have lots of true diving stories and some graphic dive accident videos! Type myscubastory into google and its the first one.
@thebes56 They weren't thinking about that at the time, they saw them simply as reminders of defeated regimes. They also knew Nagato was the flagship of the Pearl Harbor raid and felt it got what it deserved.
The Bismarck wasnt the best ship at that time, thats true. But this two points create myth of the Bismarck I guess... This story made the Bismarck popular
Although the argument rages, the facts speak for them selves. The results are as they lay. However in our modern history the naval battles WWII were amazing. Both Brits and the Americans were behind in there war ship development program. They took there aging fleets and still gave the enemy of the time a pasting.
Of course we couldn´t be proud of anything what happened in this time. But the engenering was amazing. The Bismarck is a legendary destroyer in my opinion a monster of ocean war. The engineering was great but the goals weren´t.
Of course France and the UK had great ships too. But the most popular british ship the HMS Hood was sunken by the bismarck
Why are people trying to convince each other, that one ship is better than the other..?? Seems stupid in my opinion..
Almost every participating countries in WWII had impressive ships in their navy..
As I see, both the Germans and Americans proved great sea skills during the war.. The Iowa-class were possibly the best fighting ships of the time, due to their high class of armor and powerful armament. But it's because these ships were so fast, I think that they were suporior to yamato-class.
@danishrammstein However - at the time the Bismarck was ready for battle in 1941, I believe that she was the greatest battleship at the moment.. She was very fast for her time, more than 30 knots, and had an inpressive range, compared to the ships of the english navy.
The ships of the german navy also had a much more precise rangefinder. They used optical instruments, which were harder to operate, but since the crews were well trained, they were extremely effective.
@danishrammstein what skills !! did the Kreigsmarine excell in ?? or for that matter the USA,
Bismarck, Graf Spree, P U all sunk, on maiden Voyages Tirpitz ran for cover in a Norwegian Fiord but was sunk by one Bomb from a Lancaster, 75% of all Kreigsmarine Subs sunk by Feb 1942
Skills the German Navy did not undertstand Aircraft Carriers or how to encyper correctly, some brave sailors yes,
Skills Nope, as the Kreigsmarine was built to sink merchant ships by wolfpack or Bismarck, Graf Spree
@danishrammstein The bismarck was never greatest BB at any time it was built to obsolete WW1 design with smallest broadside of any modern BB, obsolete single purpose secondary guns, terrible AA protection could not stop 6 biplanes, weak deck and turret armor obsolete 3 engines/3 screws, weak stern and poor welding Germany should have built more Uboats instead of surface ships
@jers59 after the bismarck was sunk Hitler condemned the surface fleet, im pretty sure the tirpitz was sunk in harbour. ww2 showed air power was now key to victory in the ocean, japanese battleship Yamato was yet another example of this." i may be wrong about that one but im pretty sure.
@slim77k I believe it was after Narvik when Kriegsmarine lost 10 destroyers tirpitz only fired its guns at weather station then never left norweigean fjord
@jers59 Stop the pro german nazi propaganda bulshit!!! The French had better ships then the germans in the Richelieu class! The US ships were better and so were the japanese!!! get your fact straight!! check web site "combinedfleet baddest keepers" on google...all sane people spread the word...get history back where it belong! bismark stopped by WW1 canvass byplane going 30 miles per hrs...rotten stern, sunk by British, went to meet his sisters & brothers at the bottom...Amen!
@ellebal1111 Bismarck fanatics are either neo nazis, delusional or born liars the bismarck is most overrated warship in history sunk on its first mission with another useless sister the tirpitz that only fired her guns once at weather station
@jers59 Wow... such a coment. Oh wait... It only took the entire Royal Navy pracitcally to find and sink her... or wait.. it was scuttled! The only thing I would agree upon would be the larger US BB to sink Bismarck. Its odd how German gunnery was pretty freaking accurate.... or is that luck to? As much as I like the US and UK navies dont underestimate a Killer. Bismarcks only mission was to unload on convoys and if it had to fight off bigger ships. The POW was almost sunk as well.
@JuergenGDB It was far rom the entire RN just 1 shell from Rodney knocked out 2 main turrets as for POW it was uncompleted with civilian workmen still onboard and only 6 main guns in service and it still manage to badly damage the Bismarck, Bismarck was not scuttled it was completely destroyed and sunk by RN
@jers59 And your source is what? Bismarck was doing just fine against 2 warships. Face it the gunnery of the Germans was pretty good. Even Scharhorst and Gneisenau straddled Glorious in 2 salvos... Im tired of the excuses coming from peeps like you. POW was firing back..its only to bad Bismarck did not finish the job. Also it was alot more then 1 warship firing at Bismarck (already severely crippled) when Bismarck's time was up.
@JuergenGDB Good the bismarck failed to score 1 hit in its last battle and due to its weak deck and turret armor a fall back to WW1 design was quickly destroyed and sunk by the RN, I will not mention the useless tirpitz , bismarck showing was dismal could not stop 6 obsolete biplanes the worse showing in WW2, US destroyer Laffey off Okinawa manage to shoot down 9 jap aircraft off okinawa in 1 battle
@jers59 Obviously your a fan boy of the History channel etc. I think you have misinterpeted what the Bismarck's mission was etc. Again you disrespect a mighty warship that had the RN reeling and distraught with fear. Thats why they sent what... half the RN looking for Bismarck. Please, you bore me with your simple mind. After the whirlwind of shells Bismarck took... He was still afloat, the crew scuttled Bismarck, but again.. I guess you think otherwise.
@JuergenGDB history channel is bullshit the bismarck was never the most powerful battleship 1941 battleships that were more powerful, Nagato, Mutsu, Ramsey, Nelson, West Virginia, Maryland, Colorado, North Carolina, Washington all had 16 inch guns bismarck was easily destroyed by RN one shell took out 2 gun turrets and RN destroyed and sank the bismarck
@jers59 what are you like 15? sounds like you dont know shit. Japanese ships would have got their ass handed to them by even Bismarck. US ships with radar? one on one, we will never find out, you can do all the speculating you want, their is nothing that yourself... captain obvious, you have told me that really tells me your not a wikipedia freak. Bismarck was not the Best BB, but at the time, Bismarck could take on any BB the RN had one on one, and probably come out ahead. STFU
@JuergenGDB the japs would have wasted the bismarck and tirpitz very quickly the jap navy was by far the best axis navy they had carriers something the kriegsmarine could never engineer the Yamato and Nagato class BB were heads and shoulders above the bismarck and jap heavy cruisers and destroyers were the best the axis had by far, North Carolina, South Dakota, Colorado class BB I will not list Iowa because thats massive overkill would make short work of the bismarck and tirpitz
@JuergenGDB Im from the US the home of the greatest and most powerful navy since 1942 we built the greatest BB,s ever the Iowa class super battleships all 4 still afloat 67 and 68 years latter we built the best destroyers in WW2 Fletcher class heavy cruiser Baltimore class, light cruiser Cleveland class, and greatest class of warships in WW2 the Essex class carriers just 1 of which would have sunk the entire kriegsmarine
@jers59 ok and so what? I swear to god you sound like a whiney female dog. Yeah and Germany had no Carriers and super fast BB... and Bismarck was laid down way before the Iowa etc.. and your point Mr. Obvious... Nothing I dont already know.
@jers59 You really are a freaking idiot. Bismarck was laid down in 1936, and by the time the Iowa class was laid down, technology had taken several leaps forward. You really sound like an idiot. Did you read your last comment... NOT Years after? Do the fucking math yourself you NOB!
@jers59 Also NOB..... the Kongo class was pretty much a vickers design if Im not mistaken, and resembled the Hood and Repulse. Thats why the Kongo was nothing more then a Battlecruiser and would have ended up with the same fate as the Hood vs Bismarck. By the time the Dakatos and Iowa class entered the war they had great technological advances, thanks to all the scientists and engineers. Im sure had the Germans had time, rescources they would have had comparable ships. So you can rant now.
@JuergenGDB Wrong again Kongo class were modernized in 1930,s with armor upgrade making them battleships South Daota entered the war 1942 1 year after the bismarck so there were no great technological advancements Carriers ruled supreme in WW2 and germany had 0 carriers and no crews trained in carrier operations or aircraft capable of operating from carriers
@jers59 Dude your a dumb ass... Kongo class although updated was nothing more then a heavy BC at best.. stop smoking the hemp. Who gives a fuck about carriers.. I was talking about Kongo class.. again.. all you do is repeat wikipedia... And Im pretty sure the Bismarck could have taken a SD BB one on one. Again you go out of bounds of the subject that was being discussed with your rants... LOL this is my last reply as obvious you are related to a brick wall.
@JuergenGDB get off the crack pipe North Carolina, South Dakota class BB with 9.16/45 inch guns would have laid waste to bismarck or tirpitz with 8 weak 15 inch guns in battle, and US had best secondary guns in WW2 the 5/38 the bismarck had obsolete single purpose secondary guns US Allen M Sumner class destroyer had more and better AA protection then bismarck
@danishrammstein Rather then spewing utter nonsense to confusing the mass with statistics passed on from your german grand mother try getting to the source where people know what they are talking about...with the advent of internet a fruit fly can find it's DNA so you should be able to do the same...good place for statistics on WW2 battleships, if you like to educate yourself google " combinedfleet baddest keepers" if this does not convince you then join the revisionist pro nazi club ....
She should of been donated to the town of Eugene, Oregon. Then all they would have had to do was paint on an 'e', and it would of been the Prince Eugene, and we could of taken tours of her today. But no.... idiots. Who the hell sinks a perfectly good ship... on purpose. Only a bunch of F***ing idiots.
@CherokeeJohnny6 No matter how much better you think the eugen was than the dozens of heavy cruisers already in service with the USN, that would never happen, it would be like telling the american public that the nazis were better.
@pramboy09 I'm not saying the Eugen was better, just that is was a good ship and it was a waste to sink her. She certainly wasn't better than say the Iowa class or North Carolina class. And your right we had cruisers galore, but she was something we could have used as an active service ship.
@CherokeeJohnny6 your missing the point, it was the end of the war, the americans had been fighting the germans since 41, the british and commonwealth since 1939, the last thing both sides wanted to see was a german ship in service with the USN!! The ameircan, british and all allied nations would have been outraged. The USN sailors would have refused to sail on her. There was also no point as well like i said the USN navy had cruisers that were a match or better the Eugen by 1945.
Holt endlich die Prinz Eugen nach Deutschland zurück und stellt sie in Laboe aus. Dann noch ein Flashmob mit Akopads und das Teil glänzt wieder wie neu.-TWARDYDOC
the prinz eugen wasn't a battlecruiser she was a heavy cruiser, 2 very different ships designation the hood , that was sunk by the bismarck was a battlecruiser, was over 40,000 tons, armed with 8 15 inch guns, the prinz eugen 15,000 tons armed wiht 8 8 inch guns
As a far as I know that last tests indicate that there is no longer any significant increase of radiation from the Eugen - even the ships which were much nearer to the centre of the explosion are safe to dive - at least from a radiation perspective
My father was on HMS Diomede an old light 6" cruiser during the hunt for the Bismark. Diomede was ordered to find and sink the Prinz Eugen he told me the crew were very happy they did not find her as she would have blown Diomede out of the water and i would not be posting this comment
well as i know von braun was one of the most important rocket scietists and without him amerika whouldn´t have even touched the moon and the A4 because that is the real name of the V2 was the modernst rocket in warefare at 1940 and the Fritz X project was also directet by him.
axelsandi Germany did not invent the rocket, the chinese did 2000 years or more ago, they used powder to form a Ram jet, Germany used Kerosene, later to be known as Avtur, Big Rocket science developed by Russia , Germany was not wretched, ? after 1945 ? then look at Dresden, Essen, Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin circa 45, Those Bombed out Homes, Factories, a people with no food, a Nation Russia, meaning to keep it that way .If it was not for the usa, Russia & France would have ripped your heart out
excuse me keirfree but germani is NOT a wretched county...Germany is the steam engine of europe and do you now something, without german engeneernig masterpiece rockets you fucking republic amerikans couldn't even let a horseshit there so think twice bevore you write...
axelsandi, the war crimminal von braun stole informatin on liquid fuel rockets from Robert Goddard. Flying wing invented by Jake Northrop. jet invented by whittle
@axelsandi Von Braun admited they got their designs from Robert Goddard, an American. When he was taken to examin a captured V2 he walked along the length of the still skinned rocket pointing to places, "this is here, that is there" and so on. he knew where everything was because he designed it.
@axelsandi Don't think all Americans think badly about your country. You are right about the wealth of technology that came from the German scientists of the WWII era. I don't agree with their politics but their engineers and scientists were top knotch.
@8189michael ok course you're right and i agree with u, but i hate those people u know, just charge a nation only because of historical events.. ok, ww2 was Germany's fault, but a teacher of mine once said: "War is the father of all things". Even though this sounds crazy it's not wrong.. :P
@axelsandi I disagree, Germany is not to blame for the war. The extremely tough sanctions against them after WW1 is what allowed the Nazis to get to power. When people are starving and suffering and someone promises to make it better, with no other options you will listen, I would too. Don't misunderstand me, the Nazi's were monsters but the German people weren't all Nazi's. ALL governments lie to their people so they can do what they want, look at my country going into Iraq.
@8189michael my friend your words are wise, but only few people know the true story and if you say things like you did, you can easily been misunderstood. i agree with you !
@8189michael The sanctions were sanctions that is fact and undisputable but the Germans affectively sent themselves into poverty by debassing their own currency thereby wrecking their economy and sending their people into starvation. It was this that the Nazi party used to take advantage of the German peoples and rally them to war. I agree with a lot of your post here Michael.
@axelsandi Perhaps not a wretched country now, but you certainly were when you were murdering those 6 million Jews, and that was the Germany that Prinz Eugen was fighting for. Or do they not teach that part of history in German schools today?
@WinchesterRanger of course they do it my friend.. but not with proud. It's just a unpleasant historical event. It's unfair to mention only the german victims, look at Stalin or America it selves! how do you justify that?
@WinchesterRanger In their defense, the Kreigsmarine, with a few exceptions, was not very pro-Nazi. Captain Hans Langsdorrf of the Graf Spee went so far as to fly the ensign of the old WW1 High Seas Fleet and was captured on film giving the old salute (which looks much like the British salute) which infuriated Hitler.
I can't recall if it was Bey or another admiral, but one of them beat his Iron Cross to pieces with his boot to express his distaste for their boss.
@axelsandi I applaud your message, Germans are responsible for many good things and some bad. Although, spell check is a good tool.., use it. So think twice before you type.

fantastico14 when did the Germans put a man on the Moon, ?? when did Germany crack the Human Gene code ?? when did Germany send 100 s of Millions of Dollars to Africa to Fight Malaria, when did Germany devise a organisation like Medicene Sans Frontiers, when did Germany , have it Navy, ready to help in the rescuing of people of Seri Lanka, or Indonesia after the Kusami ...fantastico14 Hold your head in shame, you are nothing more than Greedy, self satisfying, small town wankers
@hetsar What utter Crap !! long before the space race the Brits were firing Black Knight in trials @ Woomera Australia and not a German in sight ! If you care to do a bit of research and read the Autobiography of von Braun you will see he states that his motivation for Rocket propelled vehicles came from the Mathematics of the USA Engineer
who published Circa 1928 well before von Braun could even spell aerodynamics or telemetry.
@hetsar Full of what Bullshit ! ?? I dunno I dont do Fiction !!
what is Fiction is the expertise that supposed to have come from Nazi Germany after ww2 expertise my Arse,
there was none,, what was taken was for examination, But !! there was nothing there, that was Not known, please bare in mind, that the USA esp needed a threat to justify its post ww2 military budgets against the Soviet union
in showing, supposedly science from Europe allowed this, much the same as the USA believed inAliens
@keirfree German technological developments put americans and russians into space, dont forget that the US may have had Von Braun, but Korolev had a bunch of other scientists from the Peenemunde team. he uranium captured from germany helped provide the critical mass for enrichment which went towards the plutonium bomb dropped on Nagasaki.
US navy submarines post WW2 incorporated german developments in Uboat design, The army studied german designs in tank warfare as well as Me262 jet engines.
Read von Brauns auto biography, he got the maths from an American Engineer why look at a Me262 when the most advanced jets like the Brits had were availble, it was the UK that gave the USA the Sapphire Jet engine, it was the Canberra that the USA bought and copied. Yes,, the Nazi Air Miniistry invited all comers in producing advanced design in reallity Few ever worked
your Me262 could not fire cannon , it resorted to latteral attack with rockets
@keirfree He said his work was based on goddards earlier work, but he took it further to make a functional intercontinental missile, your government thought goddard was a crank and refused goddards request to to fund development until von braun proved it worked The Me262 provided comparitive answers to problems with whittles engines when the US was developing there own, Go look at the history of the sound barrier, information and technology is all one way with the US.
@gordongate Me262 provided comparative answers ??? FFs the Brits gave America its first Jet engine the Sapphire a modified F Whittle design german engines could only last 10 hours of flight then had to be changed out, Me262 could only fire rockets at slow firing bombers, even then it could only do that by flying with the bomber being broadside on
PS the UK is in Europe same continent as German/dutch border, why did they pick Peenemunde simple it had the nearest flight range to london
@keirfree Urm Peenemunde is a little tiny port island tucked away of the coast of the German baltic sea .
NO rockets where fired directley from Peenemunde to london as it was a Test Site and its main role was to pick up the remanants of the V-2 tests that went into the baltic sea it was picked as it was tucked away out of range of Allied/Soviet bombers.
HA if any German belived it was nearest to london then he failed Geography
@thebritish25 I know where Peenemunde is its North of Berlin and South of Copenhagen, its was the remnants of the launches from Peenemunde picked up by a Danish Engineer, then sent to London, that gave the brits a clue to what was going on my point was Peenemunde the launch, and test pad for the V2 is in Europe as is London.
No way can a V" be Intercontinental its a Ballistic missile, but so is 88mm Mortar.

fantastico14 How Come Germany LOST 2 wars against America How come it took Millions of USA $ to save your wretched Nation ie the Mitchell Plan, and the USA & the UK Flying in Bread ,, Coal etc when the Soviets Had your Balls for breakfast,,,, 2009 germany just 1 of the many pecking in World Markets for, Trade, Can you fight of China, India, or the raw reserves of Russia ?? Think again my friend before you wave that Small Penis on here Tosser
He wants you to say that, and then he calls you a Nazi.
This asshole is spilling his hatred on all German sites. Seems he had trouble with a German girl some years ago. Also possible an inferiority complex and penis envy.
There is more behind it, also heard he has a Persian cat- I don´t want to know more, really.
The real naval war was in the pacific, Kamikazes fights to the death Greatest example of gunnery was USS West Virginia hitting jap BB Yamashiro from 24,000YDS at night with her first salvo. And Escort carrier Kalinin BAy hitting jap heavy cruiser which latter sank with her 5 inch gun
The real naval war with battleships was in WW1, i don't think any battleship V battleship or any other battle would compare to the battle of Jutland. Do you read of anything else other than your own countries battles?? The most amazing carrier V carrier battles was obviously the americans V Japan.
they were not to be the american navies ultimate line of battleship , just fast carrier
protection.
the montana class would have been the heavy armoured answer to yamato and tirpitz with a greatly reduced speed but adequate armour and three more 16" guns.
they were cancelled due to BBs being basically obsolete by that time.
they were never in any combat against heavu warships and the claims made for their armour do not stand up to close inspection.
BB are a balance of speed , protection and firepower.
yet poeple claim these ships had the fastest speed , heaviest protection and greatest firepower on a displacement which was not that ggreater than other BB of their period.
the were designed to be fast carrier escorts and were in essence lengthened south dakotas.
The Iowas had the best battleship gun built the 16/50 and the best battleship shell which was equal to 18 inch shell no other BB could touch its top speed and its armor was world class above the bismark
The Iowas had the most effective armor installed on BB followed by South Dakota The Iowas inclined belt was highly effective and it has STS armor outboard of the belt to break up any shell coming into it. French Richelieu had similiar armor Much more effective then bismark WW1 design
It is true that Prinz Eugen did not see combat comparable to what some of our ships saw in the pacific, but her story is amazing none the less. The torpedo that almost sank her took off over 40 ft of her stern, and she still made it to safety. When talking about this ship I am not worried about bringing up war crimes as the entire war in the east was one huge war crime, and Hitler was no worse then Stalin. The German navy pulled off the greatest seaborn evacuation in history
this was long ago(1993) i wrote a paper on the PE that i thought was fair and balanced. if you look at it through an un biased eye that is. think about it. ran with the bismarck, survived a near sinking, fought valiantly providing fire support to wehrmacht soldiers who at that time were only trying to save as many civialians from bolshevik terror as possible, and then after being used as target practice not being sunk. what a great story. the pc's thought otherwise
The prinz Eugen did not see very much combat when you compare it to American or British C.A. One torpedo almost sank it . And you neglect to mention the vast war crimes commited on the eastern front by the wehrmact against the soviet people. Payback is bitch
Could one of you native German speakers please tell me how 'Eugen' is pronounced in German. Is it "Oui-gan' or is it Eugene??? I alway understood it was the former but......
The Iowas were faster, they had better armament, and most importantly they had better fire control. They would have been able to stay at very long range and finish off the Bismark with superior gunnery.
A real fighting heavy cruiser the USS San Francisco 17 battlestars sank 3 destroyers and heavy cruiser disable battleship and heavy cruiser, 3 medal of honor winners, hero of Guadalcanal the toughest naval fight in WW2
The truth hurts. I forgot to add another german naval disaster Norway sinking brand new heavy cruiser blucher using 50 year old weapons fired by cooks and bakers. Suppose to feel sorry for british firing on survivors in water. Thet cam from country of the SS, concentration camls, malmedy,
And the Bismarck destroyed the Hood in 5 minutes. So what? You are exactly the kind of brainless asshole who gives Americans a bad name. You obviously get your history knowledge from 1940's American movies. "Americans are braver than anyone else"..."Everything American is best"... you're a freaking imbecile.
You are still just spouting B.S. that has nothing to do with the debate at hand and looking through your comments page it looks like that is all you ever do. You are a fool. The Bismarck chase is far more famous than any of the engagements you babble about and none of your babble changes that fact.
You want to see fool look in mirror, The atlantic is where the pussies went to fight, Coward captain of Graf Spree blowing his ship up rather then taking it to sea and go out fighting. If he was in the U.S. Navy he would have been tried for cowardice. Scharnhorst and Gneisenaue 2 modern german battle cruisers running away from one overage british BC Renown. Narvik 10 kraut destroyers sunk for loss of 2 british destroyers . bismark and tirpitz 2 over rated commerce raider
Again you show your total ignorance. 1st battle of Narvik-both sides suffered 2 destroyers sunk and 1 damaged forcing the British to retreat. The 2nd battle pitted a battleship, a carrier, and 9 destroyers against 8 German destroyers with no fuel and little ammo. 3 German destroyers sunk ,5 scuttled, and the British fired on helpless survivors in the water. Just stop now. You know nothing and just continue to make a fool of yourself.
Germany had the weakest surface navy of any major navy in WW2 no aircraft carrier, England had over 30 and the U.S. built 141, ESSEX CLASS CARRIER was the greatest class of warship ever 24 built and none sunk. USS franklin was the mosr heavily damage ship to survive the war, german damage control was third rate. one torpedo in battleship and it was basicaly sunk by it. American ships survived kamikazes something german ships with there terrible AAA protection were not capable of.
You can keep skirting the issue and spouting irrelevent B.S. but it does not change the simple fact that the hunt for the Bismarck is the most famous event in naval history and the Bismarck the most famous ship. No german capital ship was sunk by 1 torpedo and underwater investigation has proven that none of Dorsetshire's torpedoes penetrated Bismarck's inner armor. Now you are just embarrassing yourself.
You also contradict yourself. You babble about how superior american AA (not AAA, that is the American Automobile Association) protection was in the same sentence where you mention how many were unsuccessful in shooting down kamikazes and were indeed hit. The only fault in Bismarck's AA protection was that it was too advanced to track the extremely slow, obsolete Swordfish biplanes. Just stop embarrassing yourself with all htis irrelevent and/or incorrect B.S.
Open Book, the vast majoriy of kamikazes were shot down . One Iowa class BB the greatest Battleships in history had more AAA protection then 7 bismarks. I never heard such bull shit bismarks AAA protection was too advanced
That is because you have no clue what you are talkng about. The Bismarck's powered guns could not track and move slow enough to target Swordfish travelling in the neighborhood of only 100MPH. That is common knowledge to anyone with even the slightest trace of knowledge of the subject. Hell, I knew that 35 years ago.
Why was Bismarck only hit once when the USN lost a carrier and a destroyer, had another carrier heavily damaged, and enough damage to other ships that they were forced to retreat from the area? I'll tell you why. Because they were two completely different actions in completely different weather nitwit. You are still trying to B.S. your way around the issue and you are just making a fool of yourself.
You should try reading naval history book in 3 years so your ignorance does not show. Anyone knows the Pacific is where the real naval action took place. Leyte Gulf you had The USS West Virginia hit the IJN Yamashiro with its first salvo fired at night from 24,000 yards, USS Johnson destroyer went up against jap BB Yamato and Kongo. And american escort carrier Kitkum Bay firing 5 inch gun hit jap heavy cruiser which latter sank. The greatest example of naval gunnery in WW2
You are the one who needs to read up. The overwhelming majority of losses on both sides in the Pacific were inflicted by aircraft. Subs accounted for more losses than Battleships did. In several battles, including Battles of Coral Sea, Santa Cruz, and Eastern Solomons, all ship losses were due to aircraft except a handful to subs. There was a far higher percentage of purely surface actions in the Atlantic.
Now that is bullshit. Even acknowledged by the yanks, the longest hit ever achieved from a moving gun platform to another moving platform was British at just about the range you say, ie just over 24000 yards. This looks to me like another case of the yanks rewriting history in their favour. Just like you lot made a film about you capturing the Enigma machine, Yes Right mate. Could have sworn that was the Brits and we lost a man doing it as well.
stubb another know it all, Look it up if you own book West Virginia fired her guns at night from 22,800 to 24,000 yards and hit the yamashiro with her first salvo and out of the first 6 salvos fired 5 of them were hits. Jealous because no british BB could beat that?It was the U.S. Navy that captured the kraut sub U505 on the high seas. You remember bloody sunday in Northern Island when you;re brave paras mowed down civilians on european street? not in some third world shit hole.
that was fucken low to bring up that sort of shit, maybe i shold bring up all the POLICE ACTIONS the americans have been involved in the past 50 yrs and continue with in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Longest distance were hits from Warspite on Iulio Cesare 26500 y and Scharnhorst on Glorious 26500 y. Warspite was at this time the oldest warship in Mediterranean Sea. Scharnhorst had only SK 28cm C 34. These two events were the longest shots to hit a moving target from a moving platform ever. Facts, not Hollywood.
It is also arguable that the sinking of the Bismarck was one of the most despicable war crimes committed by the U.K. forces. They continued to pound the ship for more than an hour after it had ceased firing. They butchered defenseless men for over an hour all because they wanted revenge and bragging rights. What is publicized as one of the U.K.'s proudest moments is actually one of it's most despicable.
What perfect 20/20 hindsight you have. If only they had stopped to think before firing they could have "put turnstyles in front of it, and made a fortune".
Sinking the Bismarck was essential in keeping control of the waters surrounding the UK. If we had lost control of the waters we would have lost supplies from convoys and we would have been quite simply, fucked.
If the Bismarck had not been stopped there would have been many many many times more "defenseless men" butchered by the Nazi's.
I wasn't talking about the British destroying the Bismarck einstein. I was talking about the U.S. using the completely intact Prinz Eugen in the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests.
Get a grip. There is no event in naval history more famous than the hunt for the Bismarck. Nothing in the Pacific even comes close. And I have news for you, combat everywhere is every war is "kill or be killed". Just ask any Americna vets whos unit came up against one from the Waffen SS or any German or Russian vet who fought in the east.
That ship is radiactive!!!

It was a beautiful ship. I think the final unit of the Hipper-class, but not sure.
I suppose ships like USS Salt Lake City, or USS Houston would have been the Prinz Eugen's American counterparts early in the war...

@thebes56 They weren't thinking about that at the time, they saw them simply as reminders of defeated regimes. They also knew Nagato was the flagship of the Pearl Harbor raid and felt it got what it deserved.

1. The Bismarck sunk the Hood
2. The whole royal navy hunted the Bismarck

If that ship could only talk....
raydeen1 9 months ago
Of course we couldn´t be proud of anything what happened in this time. But the engenering was amazing. The Bismarck is a legendary destroyer in my opinion a monster of ocean war. The engineering was great but the goals weren´t.
Of course France and the UK had great ships too. But the most popular british ship the HMS Hood was sunken by the bismarck
Widukind75 10 months ago
The Admiral Hipper class ships were very good looking ships, but I am more attracted to the innovative design of the Graf Spee.

dangerjim67 11 months ago
Why are people trying to convince each other, that one ship is better than the other..?? Seems stupid in my opinion..
Almost every participating countries in WWII had impressive ships in their navy..
As I see, both the Germans and Americans proved great sea skills during the war.. The Iowa-class were possibly the best fighting ships of the time, due to their high class of armor and powerful armament. But it's because these ships were so fast, I think that they were suporior to yamato-class.
danishrammstein 11 months ago
@danishrammstein However - at the time the Bismarck was ready for battle in 1941, I believe that she was the greatest battleship at the moment.. She was very fast for her time, more than 30 knots, and had an inpressive range, compared to the ships of the english navy.
The ships of the german navy also had a much more precise rangefinder. They used optical instruments, which were harder to operate, but since the crews were well trained, they were extremely effective.
danishrammstein 11 months ago
@danishrammstein what skills !! did the Kreigsmarine excell in ?? or for that matter the USA,
Bismarck, Graf Spree, P U all sunk, on maiden Voyages Tirpitz ran for cover in a Norwegian Fiord but was sunk by one Bomb from a Lancaster, 75% of all Kreigsmarine Subs sunk by Feb 1942
Skills the German Navy did not undertstand Aircraft Carriers or how to encyper correctly, some brave sailors yes,
Skills Nope, as the Kreigsmarine was built to sink merchant ships by wolfpack or Bismarck, Graf Spree
keirfree 11 months ago
@danishrammstein The bismarck was never greatest BB at any time it was built to obsolete WW1 design with smallest broadside of any modern BB, obsolete single purpose secondary guns, terrible AA protection could not stop 6 biplanes, weak deck and turret armor obsolete 3 engines/3 screws, weak stern and poor welding Germany should have built more Uboats instead of surface ships
jers59 10 months ago
@jers59 after the bismarck was sunk Hitler condemned the surface fleet, im pretty sure the tirpitz was sunk in harbour. ww2 showed air power was now key to victory in the ocean, japanese battleship Yamato was yet another example of this." i may be wrong about that one but im pretty sure.
slim77k 10 months ago
@slim77k I believe it was after Narvik when Kriegsmarine lost 10 destroyers tirpitz only fired its guns at weather station then never left norweigean fjord
jers59 10 months ago 2
@jers59 Stop the pro german nazi propaganda bulshit!!! The French had better ships then the germans in the Richelieu class! The US ships were better and so were the japanese!!! get your fact straight!! check web site "combinedfleet baddest keepers" on google...all sane people spread the word...get history back where it belong! bismark stopped by WW1 canvass byplane going 30 miles per hrs...rotten stern, sunk by British, went to meet his sisters & brothers at the bottom...Amen!
ellebal1111 10 months ago
@ellebal1111 Bismarck fanatics are either neo nazis, delusional or born liars the bismarck is most overrated warship in history sunk on its first mission with another useless sister the tirpitz that only fired her guns once at weather station
jers59 10 months ago
@jers59 Wow... such a coment. Oh wait... It only took the entire Royal Navy pracitcally to find and sink her... or wait.. it was scuttled! The only thing I would agree upon would be the larger US BB to sink Bismarck. Its odd how German gunnery was pretty freaking accurate.... or is that luck to? As much as I like the US and UK navies dont underestimate a Killer. Bismarcks only mission was to unload on convoys and if it had to fight off bigger ships. The POW was almost sunk as well.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB It was far rom the entire RN just 1 shell from Rodney knocked out 2 main turrets as for POW it was uncompleted with civilian workmen still onboard and only 6 main guns in service and it still manage to badly damage the Bismarck, Bismarck was not scuttled it was completely destroyed and sunk by RN
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 And your source is what? Bismarck was doing just fine against 2 warships. Face it the gunnery of the Germans was pretty good. Even Scharhorst and Gneisenau straddled Glorious in 2 salvos... Im tired of the excuses coming from peeps like you. POW was firing back..its only to bad Bismarck did not finish the job. Also it was alot more then 1 warship firing at Bismarck (already severely crippled) when Bismarck's time was up.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB Good the bismarck failed to score 1 hit in its last battle and due to its weak deck and turret armor a fall back to WW1 design was quickly destroyed and sunk by the RN, I will not mention the useless tirpitz , bismarck showing was dismal could not stop 6 obsolete biplanes the worse showing in WW2, US destroyer Laffey off Okinawa manage to shoot down 9 jap aircraft off okinawa in 1 battle
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 Obviously your a fan boy of the History channel etc. I think you have misinterpeted what the Bismarck's mission was etc. Again you disrespect a mighty warship that had the RN reeling and distraught with fear. Thats why they sent what... half the RN looking for Bismarck. Please, you bore me with your simple mind. After the whirlwind of shells Bismarck took... He was still afloat, the crew scuttled Bismarck, but again.. I guess you think otherwise.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB history channel is bullshit the bismarck was never the most powerful battleship 1941 battleships that were more powerful, Nagato, Mutsu, Ramsey, Nelson, West Virginia, Maryland, Colorado, North Carolina, Washington all had 16 inch guns bismarck was easily destroyed by RN one shell took out 2 gun turrets and RN destroyed and sank the bismarck
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 what are you like 15? sounds like you dont know shit. Japanese ships would have got their ass handed to them by even Bismarck. US ships with radar? one on one, we will never find out, you can do all the speculating you want, their is nothing that yourself... captain obvious, you have told me that really tells me your not a wikipedia freak. Bismarck was not the Best BB, but at the time, Bismarck could take on any BB the RN had one on one, and probably come out ahead. STFU
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB the japs would have wasted the bismarck and tirpitz very quickly the jap navy was by far the best axis navy they had carriers something the kriegsmarine could never engineer the Yamato and Nagato class BB were heads and shoulders above the bismarck and jap heavy cruisers and destroyers were the best the axis had by far, North Carolina, South Dakota, Colorado class BB I will not list Iowa because thats massive overkill would make short work of the bismarck and tirpitz
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 Clearly you are dilusional.. and according from other peeps... were done. Have fun playing RN in your bathtub.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB Im from the US the home of the greatest and most powerful navy since 1942 we built the greatest BB,s ever the Iowa class super battleships all 4 still afloat 67 and 68 years latter we built the best destroyers in WW2 Fletcher class heavy cruiser Baltimore class, light cruiser Cleveland class, and greatest class of warships in WW2 the Essex class carriers just 1 of which would have sunk the entire kriegsmarine
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 ok and so what? I swear to god you sound like a whiney female dog. Yeah and Germany had no Carriers and super fast BB... and Bismarck was laid down way before the Iowa etc.. and your point Mr. Obvious... Nothing I dont already know.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB Iowas were laid down 1940-41 not years after the bismarck do the math,
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 You really are a freaking idiot. Bismarck was laid down in 1936, and by the time the Iowa class was laid down, technology had taken several leaps forward. You really sound like an idiot. Did you read your last comment... NOT Years after? Do the fucking math yourself you NOB!
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@jers59 Also NOB..... the Kongo class was pretty much a vickers design if Im not mistaken, and resembled the Hood and Repulse. Thats why the Kongo was nothing more then a Battlecruiser and would have ended up with the same fate as the Hood vs Bismarck. By the time the Dakatos and Iowa class entered the war they had great technological advances, thanks to all the scientists and engineers. Im sure had the Germans had time, rescources they would have had comparable ships. So you can rant now.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB Wrong again Kongo class were modernized in 1930,s with armor upgrade making them battleships South Daota entered the war 1942 1 year after the bismarck so there were no great technological advancements Carriers ruled supreme in WW2 and germany had 0 carriers and no crews trained in carrier operations or aircraft capable of operating from carriers
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 Dude your a dumb ass... Kongo class although updated was nothing more then a heavy BC at best.. stop smoking the hemp. Who gives a fuck about carriers.. I was talking about Kongo class.. again.. all you do is repeat wikipedia... And Im pretty sure the Bismarck could have taken a SD BB one on one. Again you go out of bounds of the subject that was being discussed with your rants... LOL this is my last reply as obvious you are related to a brick wall.
JuergenGDB 8 months ago
@JuergenGDB get off the crack pipe North Carolina, South Dakota class BB with 9.16/45 inch guns would have laid waste to bismarck or tirpitz with 8 weak 15 inch guns in battle, and US had best secondary guns in WW2 the 5/38 the bismarck had obsolete single purpose secondary guns US Allen M Sumner class destroyer had more and better AA protection then bismarck
jers59 8 months ago
@jers59 Ok calling the Bismarcks 15" guns as being weak... you obviously dont know shit.

@CherokeeJohnny6 No matter how much better you think the eugen was than the dozens of heavy cruisers already in service with the USN, that would never happen, it would be like telling the american public that the nazis were better.
pramboy09 1 year ago
@pramboy09 I'm not saying the Eugen was better, just that is was a good ship and it was a waste to sink her. She certainly wasn't better than say the Iowa class or North Carolina class. And your right we had cruisers galore, but she was something we could have used as an active service ship.
CherokeeJohnny6 1 year ago
@CherokeeJohnny6 your missing the point, it was the end of the war, the americans had been fighting the germans since 41, the british and commonwealth since 1939, the last thing both sides wanted to see was a german ship in service with the USN!! The ameircan, british and all allied nations would have been outraged. The USN sailors would have refused to sail on her. There was also no point as well like i said the USN navy had cruisers that were a match or better the Eugen by 1945.

@axelsandi Von Braun admited they got their designs from Robert Goddard, an American. When he was taken to examin a captured V2 he walked along the length of the still skinned rocket pointing to places, "this is here, that is there" and so on. he knew where everything was because he designed it.

8189michael 1 year ago 12
@8189michael ok course you're right and i agree with u, but i hate those people u know, just charge a nation only because of historical events.. ok, ww2 was Germany's fault, but a teacher of mine once said: "War is the father of all things". Even though this sounds crazy it's not wrong.. :P
axelsandi 1 year ago
@axelsandi I disagree, Germany is not to blame for the war. The extremely tough sanctions against them after WW1 is what allowed the Nazis to get to power. When people are starving and suffering and someone promises to make it better, with no other options you will listen, I would too. Don't misunderstand me, the Nazi's were monsters but the German people weren't all Nazi's. ALL governments lie to their people so they can do what they want, look at my country going into Iraq.
8189michael 1 year ago 2
@8189michael my friend your words are wise, but only few people know the true story and if you say things like you did, you can easily been misunderstood. i agree with you !
axelsandi 1 year ago
@8189michael The sanctions were sanctions that is fact and undisputable but the Germans affectively sent themselves into poverty by debassing their own currency thereby wrecking their economy and sending their people into starvation. It was this that the Nazi party used to take advantage of the German peoples and rally them to war. I agree with a lot of your post here Michael.
Ecthaelyon 1 year ago
@axelsandi Perhaps not a wretched country now, but you certainly were when you were murdering those 6 million Jews, and that was the Germany that Prinz Eugen was fighting for. Or do they not teach that part of history in German schools today?

@WinchesterRanger of course they do it my friend.. but not with proud. It's just a unpleasant historical event. It's unfair to mention only the german victims, look at Stalin or America it selves! how do you justify that?
axelsandi 1 year ago
@WinchesterRanger In their defense, the Kreigsmarine, with a few exceptions, was not very pro-Nazi. Captain Hans Langsdorrf of the Graf Spee went so far as to fly the ensign of the old WW1 High Seas Fleet and was captured on film giving the old salute (which looks much like the British salute) which infuriated Hitler.
I can't recall if it was Bey or another admiral, but one of them beat his Iron Cross to pieces with his boot to express his distaste for their boss.

US navy submarines post WW2 incorporated german developments in Uboat design, The army studied german designs in tank warfare as well as Me262 jet engines.
gordongate 10 months ago
@gordongate Again what Planet are you On
Read von Brauns auto biography, he got the maths from an American Engineer why look at a Me262 when the most advanced jets like the Brits had were availble, it was the UK that gave the USA the Sapphire Jet engine, it was the Canberra that the USA bought and copied. Yes,, the Nazi Air Miniistry invited all comers in producing advanced design in reallity Few ever worked
your Me262 could not fire cannon , it resorted to latteral attack with rockets
keirfree 10 months ago
@keirfree He said his work was based on goddards earlier work, but he took it further to make a functional intercontinental missile, your government thought goddard was a crank and refused goddards request to to fund development until von braun proved it worked The Me262 provided comparitive answers to problems with whittles engines when the US was developing there own, Go look at the history of the sound barrier, information and technology is all one way with the US.
gordongate 10 months ago
@gordongate Me262 provided comparative answers ??? FFs the Brits gave America its first Jet engine the Sapphire a modified F Whittle design german engines could only last 10 hours of flight then had to be changed out, Me262 could only fire rockets at slow firing bombers, even then it could only do that by flying with the bomber being broadside on
PS the UK is in Europe same continent as German/dutch border, why did they pick Peenemunde simple it had the nearest flight range to london
keirfree 10 months ago
@keirfree Urm Peenemunde is a little tiny port island tucked away of the coast of the German baltic sea .
NO rockets where fired directley from Peenemunde to london as it was a Test Site and its main role was to pick up the remanants of the V-2 tests that went into the baltic sea it was picked as it was tucked away out of range of Allied/Soviet bombers.
HA if any German belived it was nearest to london then he failed Geography
Its on the other side of Germany.
thebritish25 10 months ago
@thebritish25 I know where Peenemunde is its North of Berlin and South of Copenhagen, its was the remnants of the launches from Peenemunde picked up by a Danish Engineer, then sent to London, that gave the brits a clue to what was going on my point was Peenemunde the launch, and test pad for the V2 is in Europe as is London.
No way can a V" be Intercontinental its a Ballistic missile, but so is 88mm Mortar.

their machinery was unreliable , their protection was not that great for a ship of their size but they were a good fleet in being investment.
just by sitting in harbour and making the odd cruise they tied down larger forces.
blucher had the shortest career of the three being shot to pieces then torpedoed by a norwegian fort.
hipper attacked a couple of convoys but that was it to be honest.
shathriel 2 years ago 3
they were not to be the american navies ultimate line of battleship , just fast carrier
protection.
the montana class would have been the heavy armoured answer to yamato and tirpitz with a greatly reduced speed but adequate armour and three more 16" guns.
they were cancelled due to BBs being basically obsolete by that time.
shathriel 2 years ago
poeple over rate the iowas to be honest.
they were never in any combat against heavu warships and the claims made for their armour do not stand up to close inspection.
BB are a balance of speed , protection and firepower.
yet poeple claim these ships had the fastest speed , heaviest protection and greatest firepower on a displacement which was not that ggreater than other BB of their period.
the were designed to be fast carrier escorts and were in essence lengthened south dakotas.
shathriel 2 years ago
The Iowas had the best battleship gun built the 16/50 and the best battleship shell which was equal to 18 inch shell no other BB could touch its top speed and its armor was world class above the bismark
jers59 2 years ago
The Iowas had the most effective armor installed on BB followed by South Dakota The Iowas inclined belt was highly effective and it has STS armor outboard of the belt to break up any shell coming into it. French Richelieu had similiar armor Much more effective then bismark WW1 design

do you have anything positve to say about anything non american??
pramboy74 2 years ago 3
give me 4 days to think about it
jers59 2 years ago
It is true that Prinz Eugen did not see combat comparable to what some of our ships saw in the pacific, but her story is amazing none the less. The torpedo that almost sank her took off over 40 ft of her stern, and she still made it to safety. When talking about this ship I am not worried about bringing up war crimes as the entire war in the east was one huge war crime, and Hitler was no worse then Stalin. The German navy pulled off the greatest seaborn evacuation in history
pigmanobvious 2 years ago
this was long ago(1993) i wrote a paper on the PE that i thought was fair and balanced. if you look at it through an un biased eye that is. think about it. ran with the bismarck, survived a near sinking, fought valiantly providing fire support to wehrmacht soldiers who at that time were only trying to save as many civialians from bolshevik terror as possible, and then after being used as target practice not being sunk. what a great story. the pc's thought otherwise
pigmanobvious 2 years ago
The prinz Eugen did not see very much combat when you compare it to American or British C.A. One torpedo almost sank it . And you neglect to mention the vast war crimes commited on the eastern front by the wehrmact against the soviet people. Payback is bitch
jers59 2 years ago
Could one of you native German speakers please tell me how 'Eugen' is pronounced in German. Is it "Oui-gan' or is it Eugene??? I alway understood it was the former but......
paperwater 3 years ago 2
its pronounced "Oi-ghen"

Thanks for that. Cheers

The Iowas were faster, they had better armament, and most importantly they had better fire control. They would have been able to stay at very long range and finish off the Bismark with superior gunnery.
CRAZYHORSE19682003 3 years ago
A real fighting heavy cruiser the USS San Francisco 17 battlestars sank 3 destroyers and heavy cruiser disable battleship and heavy cruiser, 3 medal of honor winners, hero of Guadalcanal the toughest naval fight in WW2
jers59 3 years ago
Saying that "The atlantic is where the pussies went to fight" exposes you as too braindead an asshole to waste any more time on.
omcx1 3 years ago
The truth hurts. I forgot to add another german naval disaster Norway sinking brand new heavy cruiser blucher using 50 year old weapons fired by cooks and bakers. Suppose to feel sorry for british firing on survivors in water. Thet cam from country of the SS, concentration camls, malmedy,
jers59 3 years ago
And the Bismarck destroyed the Hood in 5 minutes. So what? You are exactly the kind of brainless asshole who gives Americans a bad name. You obviously get your history knowledge from 1940's American movies. "Americans are braver than anyone else"..."Everything American is best"... you're a freaking imbecile.
omcx1 3 years ago 5
moron, the hood was overage battle cruiser and there is no proof the bismark sank the Hood could have been cordite explosion from spark
jers59 3 years ago
You are still just spouting B.S. that has nothing to do with the debate at hand and looking through your comments page it looks like that is all you ever do. You are a fool. The Bismarck chase is far more famous than any of the engagements you babble about and none of your babble changes that fact.
omcx1 3 years ago 2
You want to see fool look in mirror, The atlantic is where the pussies went to fight, Coward captain of Graf Spree blowing his ship up rather then taking it to sea and go out fighting. If he was in the U.S. Navy he would have been tried for cowardice. Scharnhorst and Gneisenaue 2 modern german battle cruisers running away from one overage british BC Renown. Narvik 10 kraut destroyers sunk for loss of 2 british destroyers . bismark and tirpitz 2 over rated commerce raider
jers59 3 years ago
Again you show your total ignorance. 1st battle of Narvik-both sides suffered 2 destroyers sunk and 1 damaged forcing the British to retreat. The 2nd battle pitted a battleship, a carrier, and 9 destroyers against 8 German destroyers with no fuel and little ammo. 3 German destroyers sunk ,5 scuttled, and the British fired on helpless survivors in the water. Just stop now. You know nothing and just continue to make a fool of yourself.
omcx1 3 years ago
Germany had the weakest surface navy of any major navy in WW2 no aircraft carrier, England had over 30 and the U.S. built 141, ESSEX CLASS CARRIER was the greatest class of warship ever 24 built and none sunk. USS franklin was the mosr heavily damage ship to survive the war, german damage control was third rate. one torpedo in battleship and it was basicaly sunk by it. American ships survived kamikazes something german ships with there terrible AAA protection were not capable of.
jers59 3 years ago
You can keep skirting the issue and spouting irrelevent B.S. but it does not change the simple fact that the hunt for the Bismarck is the most famous event in naval history and the Bismarck the most famous ship. No german capital ship was sunk by 1 torpedo and underwater investigation has proven that none of Dorsetshire's torpedoes penetrated Bismarck's inner armor. Now you are just embarrassing yourself.
omcx1 3 years ago
You also contradict yourself. You babble about how superior american AA (not AAA, that is the American Automobile Association) protection was in the same sentence where you mention how many were unsuccessful in shooting down kamikazes and were indeed hit. The only fault in Bismarck's AA protection was that it was too advanced to track the extremely slow, obsolete Swordfish biplanes. Just stop embarrassing yourself with all htis irrelevent and/or incorrect B.S.
omcx1 3 years ago
Open Book, the vast majoriy of kamikazes were shot down . One Iowa class BB the greatest Battleships in history had more AAA protection then 7 bismarks. I never heard such bull shit bismarks AAA protection was too advanced
jers59 3 years ago
That is because you have no clue what you are talkng about. The Bismarck's powered guns could not track and move slow enough to target Swordfish travelling in the neighborhood of only 100MPH. That is common knowledge to anyone with even the slightest trace of knowledge of the subject. Hell, I knew that 35 years ago.
omcx1 3 years ago
Battle of Santa Cruz 1942 USS South Dakota shoots down 26 jap naval aircraft why the bismark could not shoot down one biplane
jers59 3 years ago
Why was Bismarck only hit once when the USN lost a carrier and a destroyer, had another carrier heavily damaged, and enough damage to other ships that they were forced to retreat from the area? I'll tell you why. Because they were two completely different actions in completely different weather nitwit. You are still trying to B.S. your way around the issue and you are just making a fool of yourself.
omcx1 3 years ago
You should try reading naval history book in 3 years so your ignorance does not show. Anyone knows the Pacific is where the real naval action took place. Leyte Gulf you had The USS West Virginia hit the IJN Yamashiro with its first salvo fired at night from 24,000 yards, USS Johnson destroyer went up against jap BB Yamato and Kongo. And american escort carrier Kitkum Bay firing 5 inch gun hit jap heavy cruiser which latter sank. The greatest example of naval gunnery in WW2
jers59 3 years ago
Should be USS Kalinin bay not the USS Kitkun Bay
jers59 3 years ago
You are the one who needs to read up. The overwhelming majority of losses on both sides in the Pacific were inflicted by aircraft. Subs accounted for more losses than Battleships did. In several battles, including Battles of Coral Sea, Santa Cruz, and Eastern Solomons, all ship losses were due to aircraft except a handful to subs. There was a far higher percentage of purely surface actions in the Atlantic.
omcx1 3 years ago
Now that is bullshit. Even acknowledged by the yanks, the longest hit ever achieved from a moving gun platform to another moving platform was British at just about the range you say, ie just over 24000 yards. This looks to me like another case of the yanks rewriting history in their favour. Just like you lot made a film about you capturing the Enigma machine, Yes Right mate. Could have sworn that was the Brits and we lost a man doing it as well.
stubbostubbs 2 years ago
stubb another know it all, Look it up if you own book West Virginia fired her guns at night from 22,800 to 24,000 yards and hit the yamashiro with her first salvo and out of the first 6 salvos fired 5 of them were hits. Jealous because no british BB could beat that?It was the U.S. Navy that captured the kraut sub U505 on the high seas. You remember bloody sunday in Northern Island when you;re brave paras mowed down civilians on european street? not in some third world shit hole.
jers59 2 years ago
that was fucken low to bring up that sort of shit, maybe i shold bring up all the POLICE ACTIONS the americans have been involved in the past 50 yrs and continue with in Afghanistan and Iraq.
pramboy74 2 years ago
@stubbostubbs
Facts, not Hollywood.
robinhood48 2 years ago
USS Hornet took over 17 torpedos 2 kamikazes over 500 hits by 5 inch guns and couple bomb hits before it sank and Santa Cruz was american victory
jers59 3 years ago
It is also arguable that the sinking of the Bismarck was one of the most despicable war crimes committed by the U.K. forces. They continued to pound the ship for more than an hour after it had ceased firing. They butchered defenseless men for over an hour all because they wanted revenge and bragging rights. What is publicized as one of the U.K.'s proudest moments is actually one of it's most despicable.
omcx1 3 years ago
What perfect 20/20 hindsight you have. If only they had stopped to think before firing they could have "put turnstyles in front of it, and made a fortune".
Sinking the Bismarck was essential in keeping control of the waters surrounding the UK. If we had lost control of the waters we would have lost supplies from convoys and we would have been quite simply, fucked.
If the Bismarck had not been stopped there would have been many many many times more "defenseless men" butchered by the Nazi's.
morksbeanbag 3 years ago
I wasn't talking about the British destroying the Bismarck einstein. I was talking about the U.S. using the completely intact Prinz Eugen in the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests.
omcx1 3 years ago
Stop the whining The real Naval war took place in the Pacific where no quarter was asked and none was giving. KILL OR BE KILLED
jers59 3 years ago
