What I love: You came with truly fantastic way by creating this Top 5.
Turkey is my favorite entry from 1980 and I'm happy that it finally gets some recognition. Thankfully Morocco was there to give it their very first 12 in history (I doubt it would be favorite of Israeli jury).
Speaking about Morocco, it was certainly different but still great.
What I hate: Denmark is way too low, so is Portugal, why that terrible entries from UK and Luxembourg remained on Top 10
@tasok3 its nothing about israel morocco will come back soon but on this time tvm is the oni morocco tv chanal who is memeber of EBU the problem is tvm do noting with that now 2m( a ohter moroccan tv chanal) ask for a memebership whem 2m is member morocco will come back maybe in 2011 but its nothing about israel and more in that time morocco was in a war and israel was a ally of morocco in that war and support morocco so its nothing about israel
The 1980 contest was done on the cheap: the IBF couldn't afford to host it 2 yrs running and the Israeli govt refused the extra cash needed; the BBC were then approached but also refused. After all the broadcasters got together to thrash it out, the Netherlands agreed to host it at The Hague. The costs and production were scaled back: eg they reused stage sets from 1976.
Good evening, the Hague! Copenhagen calling. Here are the votes of the Danish jury. France: 1 point Germany: 2 points Norway: 3 points Ireland: 4 points The Netherlands: 5 points Switzerland: 6 points Luxembourg: 7 points Belgium: 8 points The United Kingdom: 10 points PORTUGAL: 12 points And that concludes the vote of the Danish jury! As for Denmark, I can't award them any points. If I could, I would give them minus five points! Sheesh!
1 point portugal 2 points greece 3 points italy 4 points luxembourg 5 points turkey 6 points switzerland 7 points austria 8 points netherlands 10 points united kingdom 12 points ireland these were the german votes if i could vote for germany it would get the 12 points
Here are the results of the Belgian jury. Greece - 1 point Norway - 2 points United Kingdom - 3 points Spain - 4 points Italy - 5 points Turkey - 6 points Switzerland _ 7 points Netherlands - 8 points Germany - 10 points and finally ... Ireland - 12 points I didn't like or belgian entry of that year
The Belgian entry doesn't quite work and it takes its inspiration from Kraftwerk. the best song as a song was the Dutch one by Maggie Macneal and this should have won - but then she should have won the 1974 contest too.
Wow yes I bet she was because she looks full of fun and had a certain charisma. The song was quite dramatic too. Did she think she was going to win?And what a thing to have on your CV! Thank you for sharing that.
Yes she seems very comfortable with it all and she also could sing, which is more than most.. It's the things of doing what one enjoys and getting paid for it and managing that means one has cracked it! I had a teemage crush on her at the time and seeing her again on youtube has told me why. Hehe. Thanks again for your titbits.
My favorite though is none other than the one and only Johnny Logan. "What's another year" is better than "Hold me now" too. I even have a grudge against that one, because it defeated "Gente di mare" from Italy, which wasn't only the best entry of 1987, but also one of the best ESC songs ever.
And last but not least, it was fun to see Morocco in the contest. Too bad they never came back...
I'm Swedish, so I'm more familiar with sami music than what people are in other countries, but I think Norway's entry was cute. And about Finland, just that flute should give them some points. There's no excuse for Denmark's ridiculous outfits though.
As my brother is into electronic music (synth), so I've grown up with this kind of music, I have a soft spot for Belgium this year. Too bad they didn't score higher. I wonder how Kraftwerk would have done, if they had represented Germany.
Morocco and Turkey were great and should have done better. i think it was the same thing thats hapening to the west these days. tut tut all about politics =D
Turkey had a good song, but Morocco was rather weak in my opinion. But the public in the then competing countries weren't exactly used to ethnic sounding songs. I don't think it had anything to do with politics, but with the taste people had in those years.
Johhny Logan sim senhor. Hoje Lordis e Wild Dances onde ganha o melhor show off ... do que uma boa cancao.
1 point: Luxembourg (LUX) 2 points: Italy (ITA) 3 points: Denmark (DEN) 4 points: Norway (NOR, annoying chant!) 5 points: Switzerland (SUI) 6 points: Germany (GER) 7 points: United Kingdom (GBR, the performers before Bucks Fizz dominated the following year) AND THE TOP 3: 8 points: Finland (FIN, Loiri, te ansaitsette sen. You deserve it.) 10 points: Ireland (IRL, sorry, Johnny) And finally 12 points go to: MOROCCO (MAR)! From the Philippines.
And another German votes: 1 to Turkey 2 to Denmark 3 to Morocco 4 to Luxembourg 5 to Portugal 6 to UK 7 to Switzerland 8 to Ireland 10 to Greece 12 to Netherlands If I wre allowed to put Germany on this list it would get 12 points (Turkey would be eliminated then, the others one rank lower). I think Theater is one of our best entrys ever.
hello Denmark callling the danish vote wil be as following Finland 1 point Italy 2 points Sweden 3 points Norway 4 points Ireland 5 points Greece 6 points Luxembourg 7 points Germany 8 points Belgium 10 points AND MY 12 POINTS FOR MY ALL TIME FAVORITE AMSTERDAM NETHERLAND
I know that the voting is over, but here are the Brazilian votes, anyway: 1p: Ireland 2p: Spain 3p: Sweden 4p: Germany 5p: Switzerland 6p: Portugal 7p: Austria 8p: Morocco 10p: Turkey 12p: Netherlands
Soviet Union votes (It was 1980) 1pt goes to Ireland 2pts Finland 3pts Austria 4pts United Kingdom 5pts Norway 6pts Germany 7pts Portugal 8pts Sweden 10pts Netherlands 12pts... SHOCK! MOROCCO! Samira deserved the victory!
Under EBU regulations all the countries around the Mediterranean (and even some in the Middle East!) can potentially participate. And since Israel didn't take part that year, I guess there was no problem for an Arabic country joining in for the first - and, so far, only - time.
"Eligibility to participate is not determined by geographic inclusion within the continent of Europe, despite the 'Euro' in Eurovision - nor has it anything to do with the European Union. Israel, a Middle Eastern country has been taking part in the contest since 1973. In 1980, Morocco - a North African country - participated in the contest."
@tasosk3 Maroco is situated in Africa not in the middle east and is therfore not an arabic country. I believe Maroco entered fore the last time the contest in 1980.
@Maasdam1993 Well, both their origin and language are Arab (and they're also politically close to the Middle Eastern countries), so I think this qualifies them as arabic (same goes for the other four countries in North Africa - Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and, especially, Egypt). And you're right, 1980 was their last appearance in the contest (their only one, actually - they haven't entered before or since).
Here are the points of Bavaria: (like every time without Germany) Italy 1p Portugal 2p Denmark 3p Spain 4p United Kingdom 5p Greece 6p Luxemburg 7p Netherlands 8p Ireland 10p and I love you Paola ;) Switzerland 12p
They're not the official results of the actual contest, but of the poll that took place on this very page. If you'd like, you can check out all the votes by clicking on "See all comments".

That's it folks - voting's closed! And WHAT AN ENDING IT IS - easily the most dramatic, unexpected twist in ANY of our polls! I could go on commenting the rest of the scoreboard (say, how low-scoring un-orthodox entries of the time, like Morocco, Turkey and Belgium, found deserved success in our poll), but, really, all this pales in the light of this surprising development. You can find the results posted in the video description, so let the debate begin (and, Seamus, pop the champagne!) :-D
Yeah, it looked like Germany were going to walk it, but then, lo, Johnny Logan hop-hop-HOPS up the scoreboard and snatches the victory from her. I wouldn't call this the most dramatic twist, though - I'd say 1978 and '81 are tied with that. ;)
Yes, but both Baccara and Lena Valaitis had already hit the top before the voting's end, and already looked like legitimate contenders. Here, though, Johnny had never, throughout this voting, come even close to threatening Katja (except from the very start), and in fact looked like he was going to end up in 3rd place, behind the Dutch. To do a late surge like that and take over the lead at - literally - the last vote was sth that had me searching for adjectives to express my utter surprise!
I'll accept your vote (since it's only one vote and not a tide of votes for Turkey as it was before), but you've made a mistake here - you forgot to give 6 points. Would you like to correct this?
So, after these necessary explanations, here's our last top-10 before the final announcements are made: 1) Germany 405 2) Ireland 393 3) Netherlands 385 4) Switzerland 281 5) Turkey 252 6) Morocco 222 7) Sweden 211 (moving up) 8) UK 198 9) Luxembourg 182 (also moving up) 10) Belgium 175 Tomorrow is the last day of voting, folks - get your votes in while you still can!
And, for the same reasons (and I promise to end this talky dissection with this!), I've also decided not to include votes from accounts created only 1-2 days ago, since these cases create serious suspicions of users attempting to double-vote (I made one sole exception in the case of user populustremula, who, based on his comments, seems to be the real deal).
Ok, thanks, I appreciate this! The thing is that one can look at the videos without having an account. And since I didn't have one I just had to make one to vote because it's kind of fun! But now I better stop throwing the stones. ;-)
I want to stress out that this is in no way caused by any anti-Turkish or anti-Ajda Pekkan feeling (actually, I have been accused of having a positive bias towards Turkish entries, which I admit has a fair amount of truth). It's only, as I said, a question of fair play and producing a valid poll. And, anyway, "Petr'oil" is doing very well in our voting (and deservedly so!) with or without your help.
Sudden flow of 12 points to Turkey was ridiculous although I also think the entry is quite good. It seems that Ireland has also got some real fans in 1982 and Bobbysocks in 1985... Not to mention the great fan of Germany (schokoapfel123/euroidolfan) awarding 12 points to Germany from year to year as pointed out by the others... And if not Germany, then Austria/Switzerland...
Yes, I also decided to not count the German fan. I'm about to check out 1982 and 1985 (I haven't done recently), so if I see that you're right, the same actions will apply there.
OK, folks, I gave it much, much thought, and invalidating votes is sth I really don't like to do, but all this sudden tide of votes invariably giving 12p to Turkey seemed too much like an organised attempt to just accept it. For this reason, I have been forced to declare all this votes null - and remove the respective posts - in order to protect the validity of this poll.
hi, my votes from turkey :-) 1 point to germany 2 points to portugal 3 points to uk 4 points to austria 5 points to switzerland 6 points to greece 7 points to sweeden 8 points to morocco 10 points to turkey and "my" 12 points goes to ireland.
1 p France 2 p Belgium 3 p UK 4 p Greece 5 p Italy 6 p Irland 7 p Finland 8 p Sweden 10 p The Netherlands 12 p Spain In 1980-1983 there were a lot of more unconventional songs, in 1980-81 in particular. It's a pity that they didn't do too well...

Yes, I feel like a very bad person at this time, using every opportunity to change my votes. :-P (I'm going to listen MUCH more carefuly on the songs before i vote the next time!) 1 point: Denmark 2: Italy 3: Austria 4: Belgium 5: Portugal 6: Morocco 7: Turkey 8: Ireland 10: France 12: Germany!

I'll ask to express my surprise at the support Morocco is getting... I can understand Turkey's "Petr'Oil" getting some support, but Morocco? Meanwhile France is third from last... even in these votings, there's always gonna be scores you don't get.
I don't know - maybe being their only entry ever (plus, the only entry ever in Arab) gives it some kind of cult value. And I do think it's an original song, the way it blends Arabic and Western-style music. Now, if that makes it good, that's for anyone to judge...
I've got into "Bitaqat khub" more now and think it's a very nice song - I'm just surprised at the overwhelming support it's getting, over many songs I'd personally rate higher.
The French vote helps Tomas Ledin reclaim his place in the top-5: 1) Germany 305 (past 300 points) 2) Netherlands 259 3) Ireland 248 4) Switzerland 199 5) Sweden 151 6) Turkey 147 7) Morocco 146 8) UK 124 9) Luxembourg 117 10) Belgium 114 No change in last place: Finland, with 23 points
From ZenonGab City, here are the results of ZenonGab jury : Morocco 1 pt. Belgium 2 pts. Italy 3 pts. Luxembourg 4 pts. Spain 5 pts. Austria 6 pts. Sweden 7 pts. Germany 8 pts. Ireland 10 pts. and... Netherlands 12 pts (het was zeer mooi)
The latest results show Turkey and Sweden exchanging places, with Ajda Pekkan returning to the top-5 after a long time out: 1) Germany 297 2) Netherlands 247 3) Ireland 238 4) Switzerland 199 5) Turkey 147 6) Morocco 145 7) Sweden 144 8) UK 124 9) Luxembourg 113 10) Belgium 112 Wishing to give a push to your favorites? High marks from our latest voters help Morocco's one and only entry at the contest climb to 6th place: 1) Germany 275 2) Netherlands 246 3) Ireland 224 4) Switzerland 191 5) Sweden 133 6) Morocco 132 7) Turkey 129 8) UK 116 9) Luxembourg 100 10) Belgium 98 Last place: still Finland, with 23 points
...and the rest: 11) Greece 83 12) Austria 81 13) Spain 77 14) Italy 69 15) Portugal 67 16) Denmark 61 17) France 56 18) Norway 31 19) Finland 21 Wishing to give a push to your favorites? Then vote until February 27 and have your say on who will be the winner in this and all the other polls (available in my video log)!
No significant changes in the upper reaches, so it's a chance to see how the full scoreboard looks like - the top-10... 1) Germany 252 2) Netherlands 234 3) Ireland 216 4) Switzerland 179 5) Sweden 128 6) Turkey 117 7) Morocco 115 8) UK 102 9) Luxembourg 96 10) Belgium 95
Here is a set of results from Britain. Seeing the lyrics to some of these songs changed my mind a lot about which songs made it to my top 10. Turkey - 1 (it's a song about oil! Too political to get any more points from me.) Spain - 2 Switzerland - 3 Denmark - 4 Finland - 5 Ireland - 6 (still a good one) Morocco - 7 Netherlands - 8 Austria - 10 (This song is about my life!) Germany - 12 POINTS Thank you for the opportunity to vote.
Ajda Pekkan continues to work her way up by climbing to 6th place, while the UK inches up to 8th. The current top-10: 1) Germany 240 2) Netherlands 226 3) Ireland 210 4) Switzerland 176 5) Sweden 128 6) Turkey 116 7) Morocco 108 8) UK 102 9) Luxembourg 96 10) Belgium 95
What a great year 1980 was! And in my home town too...! 1 pt Morocco 2 pt Italy 3 pt Germany 4 pt Ireland 5 pt Austria 6 pt UK 7 pt Switzerland 8 pt Netherlands 10 pt Turkey 12 pt Denmark
The great pity is that The Flower of Scotland couldn't find it in his heart to give even 1 vote for the eventual winning song. (tongue in cheek hee hee hee!)
I'm only sorry not to see Denmark up there and don't know why even amongst esc fans it languishes so lowly. Having looked at this contest again I can only say that I think that there are some great songs - not weird - that IMO rank amongst the top echelon, esp. the 4 that lead here. Even Belgium & Morrocco (whom I didn't vote for)have special status.
Yes, the Danish entry wasn't bad at all - there wasn't room in my top-10 for "Tænker alltid pa dig" but I think it's a very nice song, and a song that I can connect personally to myself as I will shortly be moving abroad. I just think the outfits Bamse and Venner wore lent themselves to rather off-putting weirdness.
1980 was one of those years where there were songs that would like to include in your vote but just missed out. How well do you undertad the words in Danish? So where will you be moving to? And indeed visually their appearance didn't help, even in 1980. HaHa!
I can understand them quite well - somebody going away but knowing he and his friend will be reunited - and in fact I am moving to Denmark, so I better understand it! And yes, you're right, the visual side of the act made the song sound more like a children's singalong tune.
I thought you might - a sort of sister language. It sounds like a move for a longish period.? But think of it this way but think of it this way; you will be closer to your esc friends in Europe, especially the Scot. Imagine you will nearly be able to hear him growl across the North Sea! Hee Hee Hee!
Turkey, Morocco, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Greece and Italy are my favorites.

Furienna 2 years ago
I'm Swedish, so I'm more familiar with sami music than what people are in other countries, but I think Norway's entry was cute. And about Finland, just that flute should give them some points. There's no excuse for Denmark's ridiculous outfits though.
As my brother is into electronic music (synth), so I've grown up with this kind of music, I have a soft spot for Belgium this year. Too bad they didn't score higher. I wonder how Kraftwerk would have done, if they had represented Germany.
Furienna 2 years ago
Telex actually WANTED to lose, But portugal thought otherwise and gave them 10 points lol
They wanted to create a BAD song but they actually made one of the catchiest songs in HISTORY!
j1nz095 2 years ago
Well, as I said, I like it. It should have scored higher, but I guess the juries didn't like electronic music.

Morocco and Turkey were great and should have done better. i think it was the same thing thats hapening to the west these days. tut tut all about politics =D
Bille994 3 years ago
Turkey had a good song, but Morocco was rather weak in my opinion. But the public in the then competing countries weren't exactly used to ethnic sounding songs. I don't think it had anything to do with politics, but with the taste people had in those years.
wjgmspeedy 3 years ago
why in the world Morocco is in a European contest?
babmousso 3 years ago
Its a member or the EBU (that broadcast eurovision).
last year Azerbaijan was in it i reckon in a few years China will be taking part xD
Bille994 3 years ago
China will be taking part in Asiavision. I hope they start it soon, but they haven't updated any more info about it.
I think Morocco was better than Turkey and should have done better. There were so many bad songs/gimmicks and it was much better than them.

Johhny Logan sim senhor. Hoje Lordis e Wild Dances onde ganha o melhor show off ... do que uma boa cancao.

Under EBU regulations all the countries around the Mediterranean (and even some in the Middle East!) can potentially participate. And since Israel didn't take part that year, I guess there was no problem for an Arabic country joining in for the first - and, so far, only - time.
tasosk3 3 years ago
cont'd:
"Eligibility to participate is not determined by geographic inclusion within the continent of Europe, despite the 'Euro' in Eurovision - nor has it anything to do with the European Union. Israel, a Middle Eastern country has been taking part in the contest since 1973. In 1980, Morocco - a North African country - participated in the contest."
SundownerDrifting 3 years ago
@tasosk3 Maroco is situated in Africa not in the middle east and is therfore not an arabic country. I believe Maroco entered fore the last time the contest in 1980.
Maasdam1993 1 year ago
@Maasdam1993 Well, both their origin and language are Arab (and they're also politically close to the Middle Eastern countries), so I think this qualifies them as arabic (same goes for the other four countries in North Africa - Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and, especially, Egypt). And you're right, 1980 was their last appearance in the contest (their only one, actually - they haven't entered before or since).

You can find the results posted in the video description, so let the debate begin (and, Seamus, pop the champagne!) :-D
tasosk3 3 years ago
Yeah, it looked like Germany were going to walk it, but then, lo, Johnny Logan hop-hop-HOPS up the scoreboard and snatches the victory from her. I wouldn't call this the most dramatic twist, though - I'd say 1978 and '81 are tied with that. ;)
setheurovision94 3 years ago
Yes, but both Baccara and Lena Valaitis had already hit the top before the voting's end, and already looked like legitimate contenders. Here, though, Johnny had never, throughout this voting, come even close to threatening Katja (except from the very start), and in fact looked like he was going to end up in 3rd place, behind the Dutch. To do a late surge like that and take over the lead at - literally - the last vote was sth that had me searching for adjectives to express my utter surprise!

Oh, okay. Understood and agreed! :)

And, for the same reasons (and I promise to end this talky dissection with this!), I've also decided not to include votes from accounts created only 1-2 days ago, since these cases create serious suspicions of users attempting to double-vote (I made one sole exception in the case of user populustremula, who, based on his comments, seems to be the real deal).
tasosk3 3 years ago
Ok, thanks, I appreciate this! The thing is that one can look at the videos without having an account. And since I didn't have one I just had to make one to vote because it's kind of fun! But now I better stop throwing the stones. ;-)
populustremula 3 years ago
I want to stress out that this is in no way caused by any anti-Turkish or anti-Ajda Pekkan feeling (actually, I have been accused of having a positive bias towards Turkish entries, which I admit has a fair amount of truth). It's only, as I said, a question of fair play and producing a valid poll. And, anyway, "Petr'oil" is doing very well in our voting (and deservedly so!) with or without your help.
tasosk3 3 years ago
You certainly did a right choice.
And if not Germany, then Austria/Switzerland...
populustremula 3 years ago
Yes, I also decided to not count the German fan. I'm about to check out 1982 and 1985 (I haven't done recently), so if I see that you're right, the same actions will apply there.
tasosk3 3 years ago
OK, folks, I gave it much, much thought, and invalidating votes is sth I really don't like to do, but all this sudden tide of votes invariably giving 12p to Turkey seemed too much like an organised attempt to just accept it. For this reason, I have been forced to declare all this votes null - and remove the respective posts - in order to protect the validity of this poll.

I'll ask to express my surprise at the support Morocco is getting... I can understand Turkey's "Petr'Oil" getting some support, but Morocco? Meanwhile France is third from last... even in these votings, there's always gonna be scores you don't get.
setheurovision94 4 years ago
I don't know - maybe being their only entry ever (plus, the only entry ever in Arab) gives it some kind of cult value. And I do think it's an original song, the way it blends Arabic and Western-style music. Now, if that makes it good, that's for anyone to judge...
tasosk3 4 years ago
I've got into "Bitaqat khub" more now and think it's a very nice song - I'm just surprised at the overwhelming support it's getting, over many songs I'd personally rate higher.

The great pity is that The Flower of Scotland couldn't find it in his heart to give even 1 vote for the eventual winning song. (tongue in cheek hee hee hee!)
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
I'm only sorry not to see Denmark up there and don't know why even amongst esc fans it languishes so lowly. Having looked at this contest again I can only say that I think that there are some great songs - not weird - that IMO rank amongst the top echelon, esp. the 4 that lead here. Even Belgium & Morrocco (whom I didn't vote for)have special status.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Yes, the Danish entry wasn't bad at all - there wasn't room in my top-10 for "Tænker alltid pa dig" but I think it's a very nice song, and a song that I can connect personally to myself as I will shortly be moving abroad. I just think the outfits Bamse and Venner wore lent themselves to rather off-putting weirdness.
setheurovision94 4 years ago
1980 was one of those years where there were songs that would like to include in your vote but just missed out. How well do you undertad the words in Danish? So where will you be moving to? And indeed visually their appearance didn't help, even in 1980. HaHa!
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
I can understand them quite well - somebody going away but knowing he and his friend will be reunited - and in fact I am moving to Denmark, so I better understand it! And yes, you're right, the visual side of the act made the song sound more like a children's singalong tune.
setheurovision94 4 years ago
I thought you might - a sort of sister language. It sounds like a move for a longish period.? But think of it this way but think of it this way; you will be closer to your esc friends in Europe, especially the Scot. Imagine you will nearly be able to hear him growl across the North Sea! Hee Hee Hee!
