He came to power in February of 1917, through an armed revolt which overthrew the legitimate monarchial government. Left wing extremists often tried to assassinate government officials, and other acts of terrorism. By 1913, all but three of their security stations were dismissed. When the first World War I began they became a counter intelligence agency. The Russian Tsars were some the most merciful leaders in history. They were by no means evil.

@TheTollundWoman Indeed for "despotic tyrants" they were quite merciful. For example only 5 of the 3,000 Decembrists were hanged. The only reason they were hanged was because they were the ringleaders and they advocated a massacre of the entire royal family. An overwhleming majority of them were not even punished ! And this was in the reign of Nicholas I ! He was the man known as the "gendarme of europe" by western liberals !

Indeed the Tsar was far more liberal than the Bolshevik regime that replaced him, in terms of respect for basic human rights and civil liberties. Unfortunately too many westerners continue to delude themselves by thinking Communism was some sort of "idealistic" cause. The White Russian emigres tried to warn the west of the truth. Too few listened.

you're talking about crimes committed in 1606, by Ivan the Terrible, who has been dead and buried for centuries. I'm talking about crimes being committed in 2011, by Kim Jong Il, who is unfortunately still alive and in power, thanks to the Red Army dividing Korea against the will of its people. Had the White Army won the civil war, not only would Russia's history have been far less bloody, Korea would be united and free.

I don't support the Tsarist system as such. Ivan the Terrible was, as his name suggests, a tyrant. But by 1917 the Tsarist monarchy had underwent drastic reforms, most of the power would've gradually been transformed to a democratic Duma. and in any even it wasn't the Bolsheviks who ovrthrew the Tsar- it was Kerensky! whom the Bolsheviks called a counter-revolutionary.

Even Ivan the "terrible" was far more merciful than then the marxists. Keep in mind that he lived in a difficult time for Russia. External enemies were attacking from all fronts, while traitorous boyars conspired against the tsar. Some like Prince Kurbsky even defected to the enemy and used their troops to raid Russian villages. Others embezzeled themselves with money from the treasuary. Something drastic had to be done. Ivan IV was driven to this by the boyars.

Nonetheless even Ivan IV soon grew tired of this blood shed. In 1578 he called for an end to all executions. The oprichnina was disbanded in 1572 and praising them was made illegal. He then ordered for a list of all the executed to be drawn up. He gave financial compensation their families and even repented and prayed for forgiveness for every person he ever executed. He was no saint, but he was not a man who longed for bloodshed,unlike the soldiers of "equality" and the "working man"

@RadioFreeWisconsin Ethnic nationalist groups within the empire were considerably small under Nicholas II. It was after the total political collapse of the Russian empire, that these movements rose to power. It is interesting that you mention Ukraine, considering they asked for the protection of Tsar Alexis I from the Poles in 1653. In return for protection the Ukrainian Hetman, Bohdan Khmelnytsky swore an oath of allegiance to the Russian monarchy. They willingly joined the empire.
