@LoreYseult I'm not sure if I'd call this death/doom. Their first album, Always..., was definitely death/doom but this isn't quite so aggressive and really has no death influence whatsoever.

Honestly, I'd call this melodic doom, but that's just me.

@CountQvorthonBathory i'll also say that, as groundbreaking as this album seemed in 1994/95, i'm not convinced that it has stood up as well as other albums from the time. and i think Anneke's voice improved on their subsequent releases. Having said that, there is a naive charm--esp in Anneke's vocals--to this album that is still appealing, but it's not fully formed artistic statement imo.

It's damn good though, just nowhere near perfect.

@LoreYseult Like I said in a previous post; more atmospheric than gothic. The Gathering, of course had their own sound and the bands back then doing the heavy atmospheric stuff were all generically termed gothic/doom.Same with the 3rd and the mortal, same with My Dying Bride. There are loads of synths, lush melodies, and beautiful female vocals on mandylion, I agree all these ingredients doesn't make it "Gothic" but I'm sure The Gathering won over many fans of Gothic music.

Wow The Gathering in their best times. This album is a masterpiec because is only atmospheric Rock...This is not 'Gothic Metal'...

After, The Gathering made 'electro'...really bad movements. I dont like these Gathering but the new album 'The West Pole' is incredible.

The West pole returns to his era...returns to Atmospheric Rock.

More like atmospheric than gothic, although the gathering in this era usually gets lumped in that scene. I really don't think it's too far from gothic metal (in the 90's at least) and to say this wasn't influenced by goth music as well as say, pink floyd, paradise lost, etc... would probably be a mistake...it is a unique and amazing cd though. During this era, Century Media was pushing Anneke to wear black dresses and get gothed out, she basically said fuck you, i'm wearing sweats.

Who referred to gothic metal: PLEASE..... cut that crap. The Gathering is old school and way before any of all the socalled "goffik" female vocal bands came into existance. Many of them are partial copycats of (bands like) The Gathering. This has *nothing* to do with gothic metal. Nor do the other so called gothic female vocal gothic metal bands like Nightwish, After Forever, Trail Of Tears, aso . It's a very misplaced term/name but what's even worst is that you classify The Gathering as that
