@homeworkhater00 ....how do you hover a heli 2 feet off the ground....well how do you hover a heli period? you can hover a helicoper 1 inch off the ground if you know how to do it
@tinyman12323 'Clear Prop' is for Propeller driving craft. A helicopter has rotors rather than propellers. I do not have a helicopter license so will not even pretend to know what the actual term is. I guess though that it might be 'clear' :)
Michael, did you say "74564" as your tail number!?!? I fly 74564 out here in Virginia at Manassas airport. I guess it has been sold since you made this video. How cool is that!? I imagine the Hobbs has a ton more hours since this video was taken as well.
@pilotman322 buy the R44 from the ONLY robinson factory in the world located in cali, or you can buy one from a local dealer. plan on spending well over $250,000 for an R44
It is the Robinson R-22 helicopter. Whoever it was that approached the helicopter as shown in this video clearly has violated one of the primary safety issues when in proximity of a helicopter on the surface. Not too slick for sure. Yes, I am a current helicopter pilot and have years of experience and thousands of hours instructing in several makes and models of helicopters, so I do speak from the position of someone who at least been there and done that. so to speak.
I got a question here... Is ok to turn on the helicopter with the clutch engaged? Either R22 or 300CB? I've seen other videos where its done with a r44. What this be bad?
On the R22 and R44, if everything is working correctly you should not be able to start the engine with the clutch switch engaged. There is a starter lockout to prevent that from happening. Depending on the aircraft and how the belts are tensioned, the blades may start to slowly move as you start the aircraft even before engaging the clutch.
You shouldn't start it with the belts fully engaged. It puts huge amounts of stress on the starter and ring gear.
I currently only have a fixed wing rating on my PPL but I took a short training session in an R44 not to long ago and what I found was when trying to hover, when I went to cancel out a drifting movement, not only did I have to nudge the cyclic in the opposite direction, I then had to nudge the cyclic back in the direction i was originally drifting equally, then put it back to the true center. Why is this?
Keith Turk is an arrogant ass. I should know, I was stationed with her in Germany. PRE-Madonna...i.e.....AH-64 IP. Who cares, or are you submitting your resume'?
Ouch Brian, I am confused, is Keith a she or was he a she in Germany before he became a she? Ha ha...hey all AH-64 IP's are like that. Only Huey IP's like myself can put those guys to shame......to hover is devine!
PERFECT example of how NOT to approach a running helicopter. the guy at 0:51 coming up from behind and running up to the cockpit! What the heck was that all about??? Not smart! IMHO
still, in all my training I always learned "Approach from the front." No matter what! The pilot needs to see who is around the aircraft at all times. What if for some reason the torque had kicked in with a gust or something and the pilot accidentally kicked the tail out right towards the Mech. walking up??? It wouldn't be pretty!
im not bashing you and please dont take it that way but you DO NOT approach a helicopter from the front you only aproach a helicopter from the sides. if you were to aproach a MH-60 for example from the front you will prob die. you aproach from the sides only when the pilot sees you and gives you approval to come in. and if your wondering my exp i currenty am around helicopters ever day its my job :)
Agreed.. ........ if a guy approached my aircraft like that from behind I'd shut down and kick the living shit out of him in front of everyone. Approaching from the side as stated below is correct, not the front and by all means not from the rear. That's not only idiotic but it's one of the biggest ways to disrespect a PIC at the controls of a running helicopter. You walk in from the front with a 109 or a 76 and your head will come clean off.
Hi there I'm learning in a R44 at the moment. Tried hovering for my first time today. Had a 20kt wind 4km vis and ceiling of 600Feet so not perfect conditions for first time haha. Anyway it went ok i was just a bit hard on the pedals but i'm sure i will relax more with experience. Anyway I am wondering how to hook up the intercom system to my Vid camera. How did you do it? Thanks Sam P.S. enjoyed ur vid thanks!
Hmmm. health & safety would not approve. Has a 20 mins intro. lesson on this craft 2 days ago. Brilliant! Jealous of anyone who gets to be a heli pilot for a living.
This is my understanding but back when the R22 was introduced to the public people weren't used to such a small and sensitive aircraft, especially when comparing it to the Bell aircraft. There were a lot of accidents, so Frank Robinson (owner of Robinson Helicopters) along with the FAA came up the SFAR73 putting more restrictions on the amount of training a pilot has to have prior to soloing or acting PIC. These aircraft are super reliable when used properly, just like most things.
The Robinson helicopter have a counter-clockwise rotating MR, so the helicopter naturally wants to spin/turn to the right, resulting in having to keep constant pressure on the left pedal to keep straight under normal operations.
depends on the person. How often you fly, how quick you pick it up, how disciplined you are to get the book work done. It took me a little over a month for my private license and right at one year for my CFII and 200hrs of flight time.
nice

Great video, extremly informative. Truly a beginners dream for helicopter lessons and a break down of basic helicopter controls and maneuvers

Perhaps this is a silly question, but if you were to release the collective control, would it remain in place, or return to a lower setting?
It seems that you can briefly free your cyclic hand, but maybe not the collective one?

How much does a helicopter like that cost
GscottS16 11 months ago
I have no idea of flying a real heli.
Is the stick have a tendency to move forward if you release it ? (therefor automatically pitches forward if the control is released?)

tinyman12323 1 year ago
@tinyman12323 The biggest thing is to make sure the area is clear. "Clear Prop" is more on the airplane side of things, at least that is my take.
