Some have noticed the youthful beauty of Ms. Louise Gold who in the film Topsy-Turvy plays the actual Rosina Brandram who acted Katisha. With all due respect to both lovely ladies, the plot demands that Katisha be "a most unattractive old thing with a caricature of a face" for there to be any credibility in her lament "why may not a cheated maiden die?" after she is jilted.
@LdHighEverythingElse filming Topsy Turvy with faithful reconstruction of a few scenes of the Mikado cost $20 million which has not been fully recovered. Have you surplus funds to support a full production?
@AliceTRoyal ... Timothy Spall, was also in 'Chicken Run' as a rat called 'Nick' ( the little fat one) the other rat 'Fletcher' was voiced by Phil Daniels. They had a charming little converstaion at the end about who came 1st the chicken or the egg... strange eh!!! ... :0)x
Katisha isn't too young. Rosina Brandram was the first Katisha, and at one dinner when she was to have appeared, but canceled due to illness, Gilbert said of her, "Rosina whose dismal doom it was to represent undesirable old ladies of 65, but who, with all the resources of the perruquier and the makeup box, could never succeed in looking more than an attractive eight-and-twenty - it was her only failure." At the time the Mikado opened, she was 39.
Interestingly, I read that this is the only part of the show that's really in Japanese, and that's why it's the part the original English audience hated!
I know! I was watching this movie with my dad last night and asked him if this song (that part) was also in Mulan... he said he didn't think so... haha
thanks. i just saw this over the weekend. awesome. and timothy spall is great, and forgive me for not remembering the 'daughter in law elect's name. great stuff.
It's a great performance, but I wonder about the casting of Katisha. The character is supposed to be really, really ugly - so ugly that Ko-Ko can barely bring himself to flirt with her to save his life. This actress is actually pretty good-looking...

This is apparently a common problem. When I got hooked on G&S, the principal contralto was Gillian Knight -- an unmistakable beauty. Just ignore it, or go in your mind to a Twilight Zone episode where ugliness and beauty are reversed.
@shauninfl28 Interesting---which leads me to think Gilbert should have pursued a different tack with Katisha--instead of being so ugly KoKo can't abide her--which is kind of mean spirited--he's terrified of the fact that she's a world class ball buster. I mean, if this is how she behaves BEFORE she's even married, what's she going to be like after she's actually Queen!? I think the Lord High Exec. is going to be busy!
@vetriet Yeah....this is a great performance (and song, obviously.) It's hard not to be humming that phrase for a half an hour or so, minimum..."Bow...BOW...to his daughter-in-law Elect" / "Bow, bow, to his daughter-in-law elect!"
The Mikado's Song appears in the Dress Rehearsal, where Gilbert cuts the song, only to defer to the cast's earnest desire he relent. Louise Gold belts out the Daughter-in-law elect. As yet underappreciated with her PHENOMENAL voice, Miss Gold was, for many years, among Jim Henson's Muppeteers. Her performance had me searching YouTube for more of her work. Alas, it was here, thankfully. WHAT A VOICE!
OH this is a GREAT movie !! The director rehearsed the actors for six months on extensively researched material. It's almost four hours long but I saw in the theater three times.
↓It`s a original song.

Katisha, splendid! So much better than the usual 'old hag' - a pity they could not rope the cast together for a full production... A

I don't think a more authoritative Katisha could be imagined. She wouldn't even need to ask me to bow. . .

Unbelievably good performance. The orchestra plays to perfection, and when Katisha commands them to bow, the mad gleam in her eye is priceless.

@vetriet 'mad gleam" that's perfect. She's a couple of steps away from absolute power and you can SEE it.
