honestly, it isn't about the actors being high school students. i have seen high school students doing an incredible job with this play, but it's really about what sort of direction the cast has been given. i think the problem the actor playing martha has is that she doesn't have a clue where martha's brutality and vindictive behavior stems from.
This was a valiant effort, but I don't think this is a play for high-schoolers. No matter how talented a 17- or 18-year old kid is, they simply lack the depth and life experience to understand Albee's play on every level. The kids on-stage are doing a decent enough job; the failure here rests on the shoulders of their director or whoever chose the play in the first place.
@norba6kat I agree. For one thing, why are they yelling throughout the entire scene? This scene is supposed to be playful. Martha likes to PROVOKE George into anger to see his reaction, but it doesn't help when the actor is CONSTANTLY screaming. This is a sub-par delivery of the lines that ruins the play. It's such a dynamic story but I don't feel that they actually embody their characters well enough to act it out properly.
I give the young cast credit for ambition; "Woolf" is probably the most savage, detailed portrait of a sadomasochistic marriage in American drama. Most high schools do "South Pacific" or "Grease" for the umpteenth time.
This is the first 10 minutes of the play. It's called "playing the top of the scene." if the characters have no hope at the beginning, how can an audience be expected to stay interested for three hours? Romeo and Juliette seemed pretty happy at the beginning. Constant yelling is a weak choice that leaves no room for movement or change. In short, people being dicks to eachother for three hours gets really old.
This is a high school production. Also, I think it's very nice to see a production that isn't so close to the film. While the film is great, it gets a little tiring to watch Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor yell at each other for the entire thing. The film abandons hope too early. Kudos for taking a different approach
well, it's hard to beat the classics like Elizabeth Taylor. Besides it all comes down to director. Don't see his own conception shining through. It's just the copy of other versions. Good director should avoid watching screenplays and other plays in theater. Result would be more original.
@sassa07 yeah...but it's a commendable effort, considering they're hs students. Martha is way more messy and not tense. Blocking in the beginning doesn't make much sense either beyond making them move around

@tonofclay787 The play is more than two people yelling at each other.

Sounds like the original stage performance on helium. Very yuk yuk. I expected them to break out into song and dance at any moment.

What is this? Everything is rushed so quickly, and every line is played for laughs; never illuminating the bold darkness of the characters.
