Dr. Pepper is one of the many drinks that taste like medicine if it's hot. It's SO much better cold. There was this big fad at one time with all the uses of Dr. Pepper. Whether it's soaking a ham or making marinade for pork, they came up with any kooky idea for it. I used to drink my weight in Dr. Peppers.

I was a kid in 1964 when they ran this promo. The supermarkets had Hot Dr Pepper sampling, and almost no one tried it.

I like Dr Pepper, but this stuff was pretty awful. For one thing, when you poured it into a large pan and heated it, it lost its carbonation and went flat.

I have a bottle of "Herritage Dr. Pepper", the one that was made of sugar (not HFC), and released for a limited time. I am debating with myself on whether or not to try this. Maybe.... if I could get another "Herritage" bottle to replace it with.

My big brother wanted to try this after seeing this or a similar commercial and it was on X-mas Eve that we did. I was skeptical. It was really good, very much like a sweet spiced tea when you used the lemon slice as I remember it. Funny how I just thought of this and looked it up tonight. I'm off to the store for a lemon and Dr. Pepper and plan to re-live a fond childhood memory tonight. I may add a shot of bourbon on the second cup for my grown-up taste!

I remember doing this as a kid. It tasted good then. Now, I think the current additives become bitter with heating. It doesn't taste the same.

...maybe it was the cyclomates that made it so damn good!!

I used to drink hot Dr. Pepper at a pub where I hung out in college (c. 1980). Nice change from coffee. It wasn't on the menu, but one of the cooks knew how to make it, and his friends always asked him for it. New wait staff were mystified when we asked for it -- "Tell Stan, he'll know."
