  • @TheWeirdnessIsMe That cracked my @ss up! Too funny!

  • what a CHARACTER MISS HIM!!!!

  • @12161euclid

Well there a coke commercial of his where he is a game show host and at one point he says "Blinfold please!" and they just appear on his head. So it's probably something in his programming. Andyesimatotalnerdsowhatdontjudgeme

  • Actually, for a lot of live interviews, like this one, a delay device would be used to make the stutter. You'll notice there's no video stuttering (repetition), just the slight delay. So yes, this was live, although Frewer would have been in an offstage studio.

  • Matt Frewer was a shit Sherlock Holmes though. Almost as crap as Robert Downey Jr.

  • The exchange was live. Not that complicated, just a blue screen. The sound effects and stutters were added during the final editing of the complete Wogan show.

  • I love Max . and I'm American :))

  • how does max put on his sunglasses???

  • I miss MH. I remember the action t.v. show. First time I had seen motorized skateboards.

  • I swear Max was more popular in England than the US...

  • I forgot how good Max Headroom was. legend. Although he does look like Micheal Schumacher

  • Wogan was actually laughing properly at the irish joke

  • Max doesn't have arms, legs, and lower part of body at all!

Just plastic shoulders, chest, and head!

  • I love that high pitched laugh toward the end. I recently bought the Max Headroom series box set and I'm re-visiting Max after all these years. Matt Frewer is great.

  • BRING BACK MAX BRING BACK MAX! :)

  • @doherty366

Then why doesn't he have any video stutter?

  • just enjoy the clip stop analyzing it...

  • LOL ! It's amazing how much Max Headroom sounds like Don Knots :Y :Y :Y

    fucking hell ! It's scary ain't it ?

  • Its not the same video techniques used in the tv series.

  • Was that the real shape of his head or is it makeup?

  • @Rimsa

    Yes.

  • @AisuSeijin

    Freaking awesome! :D :D

  • @Rimsa It was one of the first if not the first computer generated character. So it is all computer not a real person at all except for the voice.

  • @cestnoir That's just the backstory. He's a real actor.

  • @Rimsa Below the hairline it's all makeup, sunglasses and a plastic suit. I believe above the hairline is a latex prosthetic 'hairpiece'.

  • @Rimsa It is well documented that Wogan in fact wore a wig, but you're not the first to wonder.

  • @Rimsa Wogan has a wig the rest is real.

  • Nice quality video. Did the transfer come from a master recording?

  • Why the fuck wasn't i alive in the 80s?! ;[ stupid 90s!!!

You cant get a hold of max stuff any more ;[

  • @inventiveinsanity why wuld you be born in the 80s m8 whats so speical

  • @weba28 Well, there's maxheadroom for a start. Bunch of kick-ass shows on tv. Some of the best movies to date were released in the '80s, and then I have the 90s to look forward to. :)

  • @weba28 Like inventiveinsanity said, Max Headroom was a good reason to be a teen in the 80s as I was. There was a huge evolution in music starting in the late 70s with punk and its electronic antithesis New Wave (now know as New Romantic) music. A Flock of Seagulls and the Go-Gos made radio fun. Rick Astley was an unfortunate side-effect, tho, as was Ronald Reagan. The Day After movie scared the crap out of us. Commodore and Atari made being a geek fun.

  • I know he's the crazy guy on Eureka but he kind of reminds me of dr cox on scrubs

  • does it really matter whether it was live or pre-recorded? however they did it, they made it seem totally spontaneous and authentic and its just a joy to suspend one's disbelief watching this. one of the funniest tv interviews ever, probably.

  • Max Headroom used to scare me a little when I was a little kid

  • really reminds me of Duke Nukem

  • @CasparWilson lol yeah your rights lol

  • He looks like Conan O'brien.

  • The Max Headroom clip is prefilmed though, because you can't do those weird voice distortions in real time. Still, they all went with it so well it almost seems like they found a way to do that somehow.

  • @Crabpeople1 - I'm not 100% sure that's the case though. I don't think there's any actual stuttering - which would have been difficult to do with 80s technology - just pitch bending and sampling. That would have been possible in real time in the 80s.

But now I watch it again, it does look like the Max side may have been pre-recorded, but the exchange around 5:24 when Terry laughs and Max says "We're having a nice time aren't we?" looks improvised to me.

  • @DoctorRad It's obviously live, because there's no visual effect loops like in the TV show. He's just in front of a green screen, and the camera's set to capture at 12 frames per second or so.

  • @DoctorRad I've just watched an interview with Matt Frewer which suggests the live-looking video was actually live. Given the standard of Max's material though, I'd expect it was scripted at least. And of course, actors and comedy acts have long been performing pre-canned material to look spontaneous.

  • @DoctorRad Re the stuttering: Matt Frewer (who plays Max), in an interview a couple of years ago, said that the stuttering was partly done by him, but augmented by what he called an artificial "stutter loop" - i.e. there WAS the technology in the 80s, surprising though that may seem. We weren't as backwards then as people think! They also used to either remove intermittent frames or repeat frames to get the "jerky" effect. Not very techy, but effective! :)

  • @DoctorRad All in all, I'd say the whole thing was staged, Tel's not his usual fluid self, and why bother flying in an actor & his make-up guy just to appear on a screen? Similarly, due to the style of Max, why bother with a live feed? And there was certainly no international delay. Basically a good vocoder could alter his speech real-time, you'd just need a tech to alter pitch etc, then you don't need the vid tech to replay a 'stutter', as was one of Max's trademarks.

  • @Crabpeople1 This was live. Today of course they could do all the effects live, but most of the effects seen here were easy to do live even back then. There's a Letterman interview which was also done live and used the stutter as well.

  • @Crabpeople1 You can tell this was live because there aren't any video stutters just voice and pitch...like the Letterman interview.

  • Max looks like Jim Carry doesn't he?

  • @Vicero87

He's played by an actor named Matt Frewer.

  • LOL... I love it. Max is taking the absolute piss out of Terry and does a great job of making Terry look awkward and unfunny. The Max character set the whole mood of the interview right from the very start by pretending to be asleep... and that's a pretty accurate reflection of the level of monotony and boredom Terry seemed to bring to his program.

  • I love Matt Frewer

  • He sounds exactly like Tim Gunn from that "Project Runway" show.

  • loves himself - so cute!

  • wogan is such a twat!

  • Max's highest career moment was when some genius decided to mimic his image during a pirate interception during a Dr Who episode in 1987.

I'd love to know what Terry was REALLY thinking throughout this ...... and how he felt when he considered doing it in the first place.

  • when he goes fast irish it is hilarious me and my dad were killing ourselves with laughter

  • i love the star trek episode that matt frewer was in

  • I remember watching max headroom wen i was young in the 80s. Had no idea wot it was called, or that he introduced muzik vids. I always thought he was part of a comedians sketch. Iv tried 2 explain 2 m8s about it 2 find out wot it was. They prob thought i was mad but here it is! Bigtime thanx 4 uploading it!!

  • No matter what you all say, I was brought up on MAX, this is great

  • Amazing I've watched "Spitting image" for the last couple of years I had no idea the Robert Maxwell scetch on ep 1 of the third season was based on this Character:D

  • The laughs in the background are like in sitcoms, total bull.

  • I wonder how he did the voice : the echoes and change in pitch etc ?

  • All done in the editing room.

  • But isn't this live television ?

  • Yes, but the entire interview was scripted and Max's video was filmed and edited before the actual interview. All the interviewer had to do was read from a teleprompter.

  • No, this was live.

  • amazing interview. max's wit is second to none.

  • I agree. He likes using the phrase "Big Fella" a lot doesn't he? Matt Frewer is the master of Ad Libbing and this is the proof.

  • Bring Back Max - far better than all these "talent" shows with (or without celebrities) that cost a fortune to vote on. This is one of my favourite bits of T.V. and should be broadcast at regularly on terrestrial TV.

  • mmmm max headroom waZ a DJ or only uZe a ZinthitiZer to hiZ voice????????????????

  • Ahhh, its Moloch the Mystic!!

  • natty , it's irish for well dressed ,

  • wow, dr strange!! (quite a fitting name) showin ur uncultured self, he was givin a compliment, if u cared to listen!! nothin racist at all, just a slang term from another country!! have u ever left ur country to know!!

  • Look at those little lines behind Max's head. I'm a geek and that's almost enough to make me CUM! 1985? State of the art! : )

  • For a while it was a mechanical background. It was a while before they could use computers for that.

I've heard it stated that Max Headroom was one of the first semi-real CG characters, but he was actually an actor in a prosthetic suit.

  • Ccccclasssssicicic....!! Wwhwhwhwhat an eeeegogogo.... Fffffantastic!

  • "I started as a Disk Jockey."

Terry Wogan DJ's like a mad c*nt! You wouldn't believe it!

  • I don't think Iv ever seen Terry Wogan so pissed off

  • oh boy ,that was great

  • max is an 80's Icon

  • That sucked..

  • I agree, it sucked!

  • no Terry Wogan rocks!

  • I love his subtle piss taking of wogan been Irish at 2.08.. hehe

I was laughing at the hidedidide bits :P

    The splicing was excellent

  • Matt Frewer is a genius

  • there's just something not right about him, hes got a weird way about him an if uv seen his single he released u'll feel the same i recon

  • When I was a kid, I really thought Max Headroom was a real, computerised character !

Then I found out about Matt Frewer !

  • I sort of knew it was an actor, but I didn't know how they achieved the look. When reporters were told by the producers he was just an actor, they wouldn't believe. It's so simple, it's just a mask and clever editing, nothing more. Quite amazing how naive people were back then. The irony is, today we can do a fully animated motion capture Max Headroom WAY more amazing than the real one was...

  • Thats true.We can do so much more with the technology available. But remember this was 1985.So that they acheived here with Max Headroom was pretty amazing then.

  • Max Headroom f*cking awesome

  • Trippy man...Haven't seen Max in ages.

    Dang I feel old!

  • max used to scare the shit outta me as a kid and im still not fond of him...

  • and you're still a pussy. ROFL

  • Nice 1 thanks mate - I'll check it out!

  • No problem Mate, any day.

  • I miss this guy. The first time I saw him in the 1980's he terrified me. Then the more I saw him the more I really liked him, his wit and style. Thank you for posting this. After seeing this post it reminds me a lot of Jim Carry's personality.

  • he'd say(dont say the p word)well right now i am going to get me a pepsi.coke burns going down actually even though they both taste great, pepsi goes down easier more sugary

  • This is the best!

    Enjoyed that A++++++

  • Hahahaha:) I love it..Good old Max

  • Thanks for posting this. I was laughing along with the audiance in the video. Thers nothing like a good 80's t.v clip. I never knew max headroom had a show.

  • Does Max sound like Bill Murray?

  • he's actually Matt Frewer, a fairly well known actor. He was the mean dad on Honey I shrunk the kids for instance.

  • Matt Frewer is an awesome actor.

  • I assume Max's bits were pre-recorded and Terry just had to remember his cues?

  • @ JayChristie. No, from what I remember, it was live. Unlike the rest of his stuff which was cut and edited to give that 'buggy' look to it.

They ran MH through a gizmo to lower the frame-rate and messed with the audio on his voice live (echo and vocoder type of thing). If you watch his own stuff, it's a lot more 'jittery'.

  • Max was a beta program in the Matrix. They eventually renamed him agent Smith..

  • Max is cooler than Neo.

    And a better actor. ^_^

  • never...

  • MAX HEADROOM IS MY HERO

  • Max Headroom is a natty headed ho.

  • Kewl interview. I just wish he does a come back. There's been talk of a movie and Matt Frewer & Amanda Pays did say there's a possibility, but still nothing definitive ... yet.

  • Max Headroom is so fucking witty.

  • nappy?

  • it means diaper :)

  • ...usually

  • He said "natty". It means "stylish".

  • Great find-d-d there, big fella. Lla. HAHN!!

  • jesus ppl if u dont know, ask wikipedia

  • this is not a real person its ovisouly jim carrie. the suit is too shiny for a real man it is a animation or a cartone.

  • nope its Matt Frewer

  • Yeah, not Jim Carrie. The guy in the video would be Matt Frewer.

  • this is from 1986, they didn't have as advanced cg as we have today. He's wearing a plastic shiny suit and his hair is covered in a cap and he has plenty of makeup.

  • thank you so much for posting this!

  • why doesnt he bring back max headroom from time to time - tv one off or something?

  • My god! so cool!! What is he`? a animation?

  • Actor Matt Frewer played Max. It's not an animation. back in the mid 80s- they did not have the hardware to do such animations anyways.

  • What! No way, total product Of the U.S.A.

Think about it. sorry the first ever max headroom was on chanell 4 before it ever went to america i have it on video .

  • What! No way, total product Of the U.S.A.

    Think about it.

  • Ah u were wrong!!! A brit creation - see we Brits think of everything first!!!!

  • I didnt realise he was an american creation. I thought chanel 4 had created him.

  • it was indeed a uk creation not american he started with a uk movie then the uk music/talk shows in 1985-86 on channel 4.he later went to america to do the coke ads late 1986 then later the max headroom series 1987-88 based on the original uk film with big changes in the pilot episode, matt frewer even mentions it him self in an interview on tech tv from years ago

  • Never as good without the band of audio & visual video editors etc...still bloody good try doing live editing...well you couldn't...still a vocoder and a blue screen and your anyones...

  • cool!

  • Very Scary Mr Headroom!

  • I think that he is a used cars salesman in Cleveland

  • what ever happend to the great Mr Maxx Hedroom?

  • Matt Frewer aka Maxx Hedroom has had a lucrative acting career since, recently on the TV show "Eureka".

  • BRING BACK MAXXXXXXXX!

  • Its great thanks for sharing. id love to see the max headroom pet shop boys interview and max headroom on the 1989 red nose night to
