The brutality in this death march was a result of a character conflict in the Japanese chain of command. Cultural differences were certainly a factor. The defenders were malnourished and famished. The Japanese were use to marching 30 miles/day and were well fed, having captured the largest rice warehouse in the world in northern Luzon. A lot of the equipment used was from WW1 with half of the mortar and other ammunition falling as duds. The Japanese did not expect so many prisoners.

My uncle marvin was the very tall man with the broom.He survived the death march and the first pow camp.He died on 12-21-1942 in cabanatuan.He is my hero.

My lolo was one of the FILIPINO soldiers who survived the DEATH MARCH. He volunteered as a cook to escape from Japs tortures. At night when the japs are asleep, he will give food to those who are inside the prison.they would carry their co-soldiers to save them from Jap's deadly bayonetas. The film said that when Macarther said he shall return that those words were the only hope for the troops. Bullshit! My step father is a surviver of the 192 nd tank devision and he said to me that he wouldn't give a plug nickle for the bastard. The troops felt he should have been shot for leaving them there. They felt deserted by him. I don,t know all the facts but I do know how they felt according to an actual surviver.

@Ricku571 - excellent point. I read a book on this subject, and Macarthur KNEW that the troops on the Bataan peninsula were doomed, that no help was coming from the states. He turned his back on his troops, but because he was totally self-serving, he was able to portray himself as some kind of hero.

why does everyone think that Hiroshima was revenge for Pearl Harbor? Hiroshima was done b/c there was no other way to shock the Japanese military into unconditional surrender. They had been beaten back 100s of miles to their mainland, the US had firebombed over 60 cities, & the US knew that they were exterminate the POWs they had if they saw US forces approaching. There was no negotiations since Russia had cut off talks with the Japanese

this was the only way to get the Japanese to surrender without the death of the allied POW's in Japan. Japan had clearly stated that POWs are to eliminated so that their is no evidence of Japanese brutality towards them. As horrible as you may think the atom bombs were, they saved many many more lives than they took....all this talk about how the US shouldve negotiated peace with the Japanese is BS, read about the Japanese mentality towards their enemies

do you even know that the Japanese bombing at pearl harbor was a set-up? australia already contacted US about a large fleet of japanese bombers are coming their way, BEFORE THE ATTACK. and the US already cracked the japanese code MONTHS BEFORE THE ATTACK and still they done nothing about it. this is a set up so that the US could join the war. like they did on world war 1.

Nice compilation of clips. At the 7:35 point in the video it states "....and soon they were at the gates to the prison camps on Bataan". During the retaking of the Philippines there were no POW camps on Bataan.

Yeah their was. In January 1945 A raid at a Cabanatuan camp conducted by 120 U.S. Army Rangers with the help of Philippine Guerrilas rescued more than 500 POW survivors of the bataan death march. Type raid on cabanatuan on Google

my point was that there were no raids in Bataan. Cabanatuan is in Nueva Ecija Province...not in Bataan. Camp O'Donnell is in Tarlac Province. Ft Santiago was in Manila...etc. None of the prison camps were in Bataan proper. Yes, those housed at these and other prisons were perhaps taken prisoner in Bataan, but the camp itself was not there.
