And the Xbox runs something like Embedded Windows XP.
It should be pretty easy to use, but I don't understand why you think it's such a bad idea to have a multitasking OS running a multipurpose console. Why restrict yourself to one program?
Because it overcomplicates things. There are real computers for multitasking and big, glorious user interfaces. The Xbox runs a single-tasking Windows 2000-based kernel at its core, not even the OS itself (it has no traditional "OS").
The PSP having a web browser is little more than an occasionally convenient trick. Added features are nice, sure, but they start to get in the way of true polished core development - look where Firefox has spiraled into. It's important to stay focused!
First off its NT kernel, not 2000 kernel. A little history lesson will also show you that it came from OS2 by IBM.
Second the "NT" kernel is a multi-tasking kernel.
The reason it is fast is because there arent loads of background processes, the software and hardware is optimized specifically for one single purpose.
The sega genesis is a motorolla 68000 based processor.

I don't think any game developers are going to suddenly develop other applications for the Pandora just because they can.
I'm buying it for the UMPC aspect, because I don't play games enough to justify carrying an entire device that can only play games.
This way you can play games, run background tasks, and maintain IM presence [AIM, MSN, etc.] with only one device.
Not to mention that developing a casual game for Linux is far easier than a casual game with no OS at all underneath it.
