Sorry 2 dissapoint all the ppl out there that think this is written by Elton and Bernie T,-- but it ain't !! Jean-Paul Dreau wrote this....Elton heard it,loved it....and got Gary Osbourne (not Bernie ) his then lyricist to translate it !! Still,it is great !!
This takes me back to my teens! It is his autobiographical retrospection to his own childhood. Had a chat ith him in may 2006 in Watford! I graduated university, his team Watford got promoted to Premier League! Love ya mate!
Sadly enough, this is my favorite Elton song. I, too, lived the horrors of parents who hated each other. I still recall as a little boy, hiding "beneath the sheets" as the battles waged on. Fortunately, time heals all the horrible wounds the children suffered, but they still leave nasty scars that never go away. Most poignant, indeed!
love this song, from the moment I heard it at 13 in 1981 and had parents like the ones in the song. It still hits very close to home then as it does now. well done Elton one of your best songs.
Something about a sweaty, young Elton that's very appealing...great concept. I've loved this song since the day I first heard it in 1981 but only just now saw the video for the first time. Mesmerizing.
Elton John was in France when he heard the original song called "Je veux de la tendresse" sung by Janic Prevost. He decided right away to rewrite it in english. Hope this information will help.
@Barynia3 I seem to recall a video of he & Janic Prevost (I think) singing this in French out there in 'youtubeland', had my Montreal-born husband translate :)
Hi 1Caninelover, sorry for the delay to answer you. I never saw the video that you are talking about. But in 1980, Elton John recorded another song in French with France Gall (well-known only in France) and the song is called "Donner pour donner". I just heard the new version a few days ago with still Elton John but with a Quebecer singer called Marie-Eve Janvier. Hope your husband can translate all the lyrics. Montreal looks a bombarded city right now, roads in bad shape.
@Barynia3 He can translate; I love EJ in English but apparently to someone whose primariry languge is French EJ is better sticking with English LOL per hubby (eltons') French is terrible....
Ha! Unfortunately for Mr. EJ, I agree with your husband (hey, us Montrealers should stick together, ha!ha!). Some people say, "Well, he made a effort to sing in another language". So people say "His french is so terrible, what a waste". The French-American singer Joe Dassin could sing in various languages without a accent. It seems that's not the case for Mr. EJ...
It was impressive how Elton decided to release this beautiful but really dark song there in 1981 (with such imperative hits of other artist hits like Bette Davis Eyes, Stars On 45). As a friend of John Lennon, many though it was his hommage but "Empty Garden" came next year. I knew from the gossip Elton was deeply into drugs, brokeup depression and despair in 1981. I loved "The Fox" album, and it featured the only song dedicated to himself (Elton's Song) I was just 11 then.
yeah 1981 was a great year since it wasn't officially the Eighties. My favorites in that year are Being With You by Smokey Robinson, Keep On Loving You/Take It On The Run by REO Speedwagon, Somebody's Knocking by Terry Gibbs, Breaking Away by Al Jarreau, Just the Ywo of Us by Grover Washington Jr... quality songs that were great hits also. It all changed in 1982 with the Rambo culture.
By this time, he was already a legend. In spite of the fads at the time, there was Elton John, a performer like no other. And why he is still my idol after all these years.

A great song from Elton that deserved to be better known. I came from a family situation such as this, so I can certainly relate.

This classic from '81 is an English-language re-write of a somewhat obscure French song.

I've heard the song in the 70s years. The song was sung by a woman. Know someone who might have been?
