  • Sorry 2 dissapoint all the ppl out there that think this is written by Elton and Bernie T,-- but it ain't !! Jean-Paul Dreau wrote this....Elton heard it,loved it....and got Gary Osbourne (not Bernie ) his then lyricist to translate it !! Still,it is great !!

  • This takes me back to my teens! It is his autobiographical retrospection to his own childhood. Had a chat ith him in may 2006 in Watford! I graduated university, his team Watford got promoted to Premier League! Love ya mate!

  • Sadly enough, this is my favorite Elton song. I, too, lived the horrors of parents who hated each other. I still recall as a little boy, hiding "beneath the sheets" as the battles waged on. Fortunately, time heals all the horrible wounds the children suffered, but they still leave nasty scars that never go away. Most poignant, indeed!

  • very poignant! taupin john ranks with lennon mccartney

  • This is definitely one of Elton's best songs.....brings back nothing but fantastic memories of 1981.....!!!!!.....

  • A great song from Elton that deserved to be better known. I came from a family situation such as this, so I can certainly relate.

  • Sir Elton hit #21 in Billboard, 6-20-81. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • love this song, from the moment I heard it at 13 in 1981 and had parents like the ones in the song. It still hits very close to home then as it does now. well done Elton one of your best songs.

  • memories of being 18 yrs old in wellington new zealand, absolutly great song

  • this song is great! I heard it for the first time in 98

  • This classic from '81 is an English-language re-write of a somewhat obscure French song.

  • Something about a sweaty, young Elton that's very appealing...great concept. I've loved this song since the day I first heard it in 1981 but only just now saw the video for the first time. Mesmerizing.

  • Hit #21 pop, #23 AC in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • I've heard the song in the 70s years. The song was sung by a woman. Know someone who might have been?

  • @DamballaWedo

Elton John was in France when he heard the original song called "Je veux de la tendresse" sung by Janic Prevost. He decided right away to rewrite it in english. Hope this information will help.

  • @Barynia3 Yes, very thank you for your information. Best Regards from Obatala.

  • @Barynia3 I seem to recall a video of he & Janic Prevost (I think) singing this in French out there in 'youtubeland', had my Montreal-born husband translate :)

  • @1caninelover

Hi 1Caninelover, sorry for the delay to answer you. I never saw the video that you are talking about. But in 1980, Elton John recorded another song in French with France Gall (well-known only in France) and the song is called "Donner pour donner". I just heard the new version a few days ago with still Elton John but with a Quebecer singer called Marie-Eve Janvier. Hope your husband can translate all the lyrics. Montreal looks a bombarded city right now, roads in bad shape.

  • @Barynia3 He can translate; I love EJ in English but apparently to someone whose primariry languge is French EJ is better sticking with English LOL per hubby (eltons') French is terrible....

  • @1caninelover

Ha! Unfortunately for Mr. EJ, I agree with your husband (hey, us Montrealers should stick together, ha!ha!). Some people say, "Well, he made a effort to sing in another language". So people say "His french is so terrible, what a waste". The French-American singer Joe Dassin could sing in various languages without a accent. It seems that's not the case for Mr. EJ...

  • The worst quality ever.

  • Does anyone know the song that you see just a few seconds of at the end of this clip? I can remember the song, just don't know the name of it.

    Many thanks.

  • Think it's Tainted Love from Soft Cell.

  • @breezaOZ i think it's heaven give me words by propaganda.

  • I love Elton's The Fox from which it was taken

  • excellent song...remember my chilhood in 1981

  • is it me or this video got a certain George Orwell's 1984 feeling in it.

He is crying is feelings of a better world he pnce knew as nobodys seams to care...

  • this video scared the shit out of me as a child.

  • loved this one, bought the LP for it, even before my life followed its path

  • i agree.

it's a GREAT song with a lot of meaning.

it only went to number 21 in the USA

  • Truly one of his best tracks!!!!!!!!!

  • It was impressive how Elton decided to release this beautiful but really dark song there in 1981 (with such imperative hits of other artist hits like Bette Davis Eyes, Stars On 45). As a friend of John Lennon, many though it was his hommage but "Empty Garden" came next year. I knew from the gossip Elton was deeply into drugs, brokeup depression and despair in 1981. I loved "The Fox" album, and it featured the only song dedicated to himself (Elton's Song) I was just 11 then.

  • also: kiss on my list, jessie`s girl, urgent, angel of the morning, all years ago, etc....great times

  • yeah 1981 was a great year since it wasn't officially the Eighties. My favorites in that year are Being With You by Smokey Robinson, Keep On Loving You/Take It On The Run by REO Speedwagon, Somebody's Knocking by Terry Gibbs, Breaking Away by Al Jarreau, Just the Ywo of Us by Grover Washington Jr... quality songs that were great hits also. It all changed in 1982 with the Rambo culture.

  • +2!

  • Gran cancion del año 1981.....increiblemente poco valorada.

  • it was on a rare album called "the fox"

  • yeah, great song. does anyone know if it got onto an album e.g. best of, essential.. etc.?

  • Surely Eltons most underrated single in the u.k.[got no higher than 42 in u.k.single chart].

  • One of greatest songs of Elton John,...1981 good times!!

  • he's pretty. haha!

  • It's fantastic! Elton sounds so.. so.. tired and hopeless or something!! Greatgreatgreat.

  • I love the French version too!

  • thanks mitch

  • underrated gem, i bought The Fox the day it came out

  • Can you work on the sound? Sounds like a muddy bootleg.

  • Genial, absolut max. .....

  • the problem with elton is his choruses sound like just another verse.

  • For your info, Elton didn't write this. Is was written by Jean-Paul Dreau and Gary Osborne.

  • you're right but i'm not wronga bout elton choruses.the fox is one of his best but not very popular.

  • Very haunting production. And a great song at that.

  • Hit #21 in the summer of 1981, from the wonderful album The Fox!

  • By this time, he was already a legend. In spite of the fads at the time, there was Elton John, a performer like no other. And why he is still my idol after all these years.

  • On of Elton's less hits, but one of his best songs. Very dramatic melody and great lyrics. I'd love if there was a DVD of all EJ's videos.

  • I totally agree

  • Directed by Russell Mulcahy

  • great songs. one of my alltime favorites.

  • GENIAL ! l'un des plus grand chanteur anglais de ces 10 dernieres années .
