I was lucky enough to see Johnny perform live twice...talk about peak live music experiences. I'll never forget Johnny, what a warm, soulful entertainer. Sorely missed.
Oh Man...Johnny was and still is my favorite bluesman....Saw him twice in small venues...One hot and heavy and one just before he died...Low and slow...God Bless You Johnny
paying my respect by visiting again. actually i NEEDED to listen to this right now again. ...ok healing in progress..... back to business... thanks again copeland.
Eric WAS a great player and deserves credit for putting blues back on the map when black bluesers could'nt get a gig cleaning latrines. Sorry to say, he has always been a bit musically lazy and did'nt take the blues to its full potential. I saw him last summer at the Albert Hall and thought it was all a bit boring and very predictable. The gig came across as though EC was thinking "Oh well, there's another £2M for a months easy work. Gimme Copeland anytime, RIP Johnny.
yeah, Eric is a great guitar player, but his voice is not precisely fit for blues. I'm a white guy, but I believe that black bluesmen are the only ones fit for blues music. They have something in their voices that makes them special, and they also play guitar with an ease difficult to copy (look Albert Collins play the guitar and you'll see).
@surmalu1915: I'm a Black Guy, and While I appreciate the sentiment, I must disagree...As has been said before, the blues is a feeling...a highly expressive art form that is somewhat easy to learn for the musically inclined, but impossible to master without an honest connection and grasp of the human condition. Race is a politically derived construct, since no other species of human has existed for quite a few thousand years. Thanks for the recognition, but if you feel it, truly, it's the Blues.
@bluelibra65 Thanks...And I'm A Libra too. We so rule, Don't we (tongue firmly in cheek )?! More than anything else, I think art, especially Music, has bridged the artificial racial divide...and, as Martha Stewart would say, that's a good thing.
@Rolandvids whATS wrong with that? stevie is the bomb, though he didnt really write much of the good songs he played, he did do a good job making them his own
sorry, i answred before i had payed much attention (and research to be sure mwhahahaha) its a Les Paul std or classic im not sure cos of the dot inlays on the neck, i know its a 1987 model though
The song is "Cut off my right arm", it´s on 2 or 3 of his albums. The best version however is on his live album "Live in Australia".It´s not on the "Showdown" album. Many thanks to FATharpo for this upload!
"Thanks, Clyde"...says it all. That gave me goose bumps. I had the pleasure & honor of getting to know the Copeland family a little bit...my late/great boyfriend was Floyd Phillips/Johnny's close friend & keyboardist for many years. Thank you so much for posting this. Being able to see & replay these gems...are gifts to us all.
Floyd was really a nice guy. He and Johnny played so well together. I used to see him as often as I could get out in NY, NJ area. It was a sad fourth of July 1997. I could not believe that he passed. He told me one time. Son if you are going to do it, don't do it half way. Sing it 100 percent, play it all the way.
Johnny was such a great guy...and so talented! He and his wife once sat at my table with me (iron horse cafe northampton mass) during one of his shows...but he was sitting and watching his 17 year old (at the time) daughter shemekia...perform while he took a break...wow did she blow the crowd away...Johnny and his wife were so proud of her...you could see it all over his face...thanks for posting this...Im getting the chills right now listening!
Good old Johnny Clyde, down-to-earth guitarist, gifted composer, really powerful singer, and unbeatable live performer. A heavyweight bluesman, he's badly missed on those low-on-nicotine blues times we're living.
I've got the VHS tape of that Juneteenth show since some years ago, but not yet the hardware to digitalize it, so FATharpo, believe me,some more of this would be really appreciate. The new audiences ought to see what they've missed in the 1980's...
Man Johnny had more soul in his pinky finger than most do in there whole body...
