I know the genre may seem scary but don't be afraid to show him some drummers from extreme genres such as Death Metal. George Kollias of Nile has some extremely phenomenal videos out there and he knows his theory and timings, or Derek Roddy from Hate Eternal. Like i said if you hear the music it may seem scary if it's not your flavor but these guys are extremely talented and utilize many elements of Jazz and rock and really have intensified it

@LululovesBobby Thanks. I'd like him to be a well rounded musician. Even if he doesn't prefer a genre he should be able to play the basics at least. He doesn't really like rap. He likes live instrumentation: old school R&B (60s-70s), some jazz, some rock, and of course gospel. He should be exposed to Latin in the future too. He'll be 10 soon so there's still a while to go... Who knows what he'll be into later.

I don't know what he was playing either but whatever it was sounded great for his age and he is just beginning. God has blessed him with a very unique talent...just don't beat it out of him. Get him an instructor to help him with his technique and other skills...then he will be wanting to learn more and you will never have to MAKE him practice. Just make sure he gets kudos.
