@no1aviator - I think the best thing about their albums is that there's usually "something for everyone," you have the song w/ catchy chorus, the somber ballad, the screamy / growlie song that gets show crowds pumped. Even on an album like Marrow (which I felt the least impressed by) it still had some diamonds like The Pledge and Namamekashiki, so you can't say "all he ever does is do growls and screams," he can still sing, and I hope he'll still be able to after the surgery.
@WiiClassic2usb I agree both with the balance and the fact that TMOAB isn't my fav. I think its not DEGs fault that it sounds bad/grainy but the mixing and mastering could have played a bigger difference. An album can still sound good with some grainy sounds in it but the over sound of TMOAB is just hard to listen to. I def needs an american mixer, engineer and mastering do make it sounds right.
@Thisshouldbeblank - MoaB, to me just seemed too sludgy overall, but DSS is like if MoaB & Uro had a baby. It doesn't quite have that ''universal'' appeal, but even the experimental stuff is intriguing and you catch new things in each listen, the singles of course are lovely earworms. Vanitas had me tear up almost as bad as Mushi, Ruten no Tou just lifts you up and carries you. And the contrasts are great, something MoaB coulda had more of imo to make it not feel as stagnant.
This song is great, but its not old dir en grey. They are so different then they used to be. I honestly do really love this song, but in a sense it broke my heart listening to just how much they changed. Obscure and Saku shall forever be my favorite songs by them.
@MikyWrita - Hearing/seeing something like this... then going back to something like "Jealous" or "I'll," it may as well not even be the same band. Not saying that's bad, they just grew up. Any good artist is constantly evolving. If they'd just kept trying to make the next Missa, or Gauze or Macabre over and over again, they'd have gotten stagnant, right?
@WiiClassic2usb I dont understand what you're trying to say?You mean you like this sound more,or what?Cause,i find this album superior to their older stuff.Mostly cause they put more emotion in these songs, than the older ones.
@MikyWrita - I'm agreeing with you, I'm saying their super early stuff was like... not necessarily "boring" but, like water running through a babbling brook. The kinda stuff I'd put on if I wanted to fall asleep. Y'know, kinda like how I am with Malice Mizer or any of those other watery, wispy VK bands that are practically interchangeable with each other. When Dir progressed, people bitched that they were "americanizing," I still have yet to see them do entire albums of english songs.
@WiiClassic2usb - I'm as nostalgic as the next guy, I got into them in '03 through a friend (who was obsessed with MM, Gackt, Hyde etc) and he linked me to a site called Project-J, where I ended up seeing Dir en grey, downloaded Cage and thought "this is interesting." Sought out more by them and enjoyed it. I really liked the more rockier stuff at the time like Shokubeni, Red [em], Drain Away, Kasumi, but I also liked the more somber stuff like AATD, Mushi, Undecided as well.
@WiiClassic2usb - I remember back in those days, going on Boo's old website, Centegrade-J, back before he was doing Purple Sky Magazine and reading the translations of the songs there. I couldn't afford to amass huge collections of imports like ever other fan did, but I did get pretty excited when I'd heard the news that Withering to Death would get domestic release. I love the music, love going to see them play when I can, but some of the fandom can be pretty... well, harsh.
@WiiClassic2usb I understand you,i personally don't like their older stuff.I like maybe Yokan,Schwein No Isu and stuff like that. But Dum Spiro Spero and Uroboros are something thats going to be stuck in my heart forever.Thank you Kyo,and the rest of the band, for doing something to my life.
@MikyWrita - And the way it is a "something for everyone" or as that ass, Kieth Bergman wrote in his review of WtD for Blabbermouth, called it a "mixed bag." Every fan has different tastes and there's something there that may or may not appeal to them, but there will always be -someone- to whom it will appeal. Some stuff is easily palatable, like Yokan, Taiyo no Ao, Jessica etc, but then other stuff requires more patience, emotional fortitude and open-mindedness from a listener.
@WiiClassic2usb - I loved the hell outta Uroboros, that album, to me seemed like it could easily cross the divide between the "metal" and "classic" sects of the fandom. You had a perfect symmetry of heavy / soft, experimental and shifting and then just plain catchy as hell rock. Toguro, Gaika, Ware, Dokoku, Inconvenient - great tracks with crazy tempo then out of nowhere hook, then "catchies" like Dozing Green and Glass Skin that just made you wanna sing along.
well I have bad news for ya all, we'll have to wait untill kyo's voice gets better, cause he has polyps. He'll probably get surgery, and he'll have to let his voice rest for a moment (I have absolutely no idea how that's possible with this man). But please support him in this situation. Don't worry, he'll be fine, I mean, we all know him, nothing can beat him!! You can look up the original post at jpopasia.
Do they still play the old stuff at concerts? I'm not digging the new music, but I'm not hating on it either. It may be his cup of tea, but not mine, and that's my opinion.
@kaorutheimpaler I was at their concert in Toronto in December and they mainly played their new stuff, they did play Kodou though, in the encore :3 made me happy, and a few of their older songs but don't expect too many old songs.
I think he's talking about the old VK Diru. Kodou may be old but it was from Withering to Death which was the first album of the current, more "macho" Diru, likely an attempt to appeal to effemiphobic Americans. I'm hoping that western androgynous neo-glam bands like Black Veil Brides make headway in the next few years in order to help make traditional VK (fanservice and all) more acceptable here therefor breathing new life into it. Alot of newer VK SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS.
@HazelHusky Yeh I can see what you mean, I doubt they will play much of their old old music and if they do it will be a complete surprise. People were even surprised that they played Kodou so I guess we just have to wait and see. They play a lot of their older music over in Japan but I don't think we will see much of that on this side of the world :/ sadly, but I do LOVE their new music so I am not complaining haha.
I never said there older albumsb werent art. I'm just saying its very selfish to think that a band that's 15 years old would never change. I can listen to their whole discography and not dislike one note, much less one song.
Kyo's singing/screaming is not my issue in this song. My issue lies with how low the damn guitars are tuned. This would be fine if they were playing Djent, but they are just playing like 3 chords that because they are so low, they sound indistinguishable, leading to an extremely monotonous and boring verse. Dir en grey needs to step up its songwriting because DSS was an album with great ideas and virtuosity but terrible continuity and structure.
@redriverhautbois You should tell that to Dino Cazares because he uses an 8 string Ibanez. I think the problem is that their bass is mixed on the low end and is pretty loud so it kinda gets mashed together with the guitars. If they upped the treble a little on the bass, it wouldn't sound so bad. I don't have the same problem as you but then again my tweeters are pretty good, so the highs register well, even in this muddy mix.
@redriverhautbois those were the exact words I was looking for. I was kinda disappointed listening to it, ecspecially when comparing it to their other albums
Everyone bitchin about how kyo should sing more should listen to other types of music. Not only is it phenomenal that he can reach those grows/shrieks but can change his vocals to a beautiful melody at will.
That's what makes kyo and dir en grey unique.
Also the screaming is therapeutic for him. He's stated that he's though of killing himself out of grief and I'm sure screaming is releasing all those emotions
@Thisshouldbeblank I don't want to "listen to other types of music." I want what used to be my favorite band to start making music with actual notes again.
Are there really people out there who thought Macabre, Kisou, and Vulgar were too pretty?
@UmbraFracta pretty? you think pretty is kyo's vocab? i don't think so. he's always been dark and every song after MACABRE was written with that tone; before that he used to look at poems and other artist's writing styles but it wasn't really him. As to art, i don't think they were artisticlly sound; granted they were great compositions; each album, even now, has their downfalls and they worked at the time and their current views as a band
@kristiankaulitz13 yea, he replied to one of the mobile questions from the knot site and someone asked if he was was so sad that he would kill him self and he replied with 'yes, many times'
@kristiankaulitz13 thats what worries me if can't get his voice back from this throat injury... I'm afraid that he would do something drastic like so into a deep depression and kill himself
@kristiankaulitz13 If he dies,i don't really have the reason to live either. The music of Dir en grey is what fulfills me.I probably wouldn't kill myself, but my life would be miserable...
@MikyWrita I'm with you there. i would probably go into a really deep depression but at the same time kyo always pushed forwards and he said the meaning of life is "finding you are and making yourself better" so in tribute to him i would continue his message and most likely get all his tattoos on me. lmao.
@Thisshouldbeblank I know Kyo hates to be worshipped, but i just can't resist and not worship this "man".There are no words to describe him.He is full of anger, sadness,it just connects to you through songs.I love Dum Spiro Spero the most, but listening to stuff like "Embryo" still makes me cry.Yesterday i was laying in my bed,and i listened to "Embryo" i literally started crying when he sang the "bye bye Mother" part.Hope he lives 40 more years,he's the only thing that gives me hope for humanity.
@MikyWrita - The Blitz 6 Days performance of Mushi is like that for me... if they played that stateside, the whole venue would be flooded in saline. But it seems things like that are rarely brought back, and if they are, it's usually just for the shows in Japan. *sigh* When I heard they played AATD in Europe I couldn't help feeling a bit envious, I hope when Kyo recovers he'll still be able to do songs like that at lives.
@Thisshouldbeblank - What I think you mean to say is "they should just go back to their Malice Mizers and their L'arc en Ciels and just leave Kyo to rock the fuck out." (not saying those are bad perse, but Dir just isn't a 'pop' act).
@WiiClassic2usb In a way yes; those bands are successful cause they appeal to everyone and its all happy bs. kyo will NEVER do a happy song and he stated that if DEG decided to do pop or happy songs then that will be the day he quits in that very spot
People who say Kyo should sing more, fail to realize that the singing parts are made more beautiful due to how brutal the rest of the song is. From 3:42 on wards there is no words to describe that. This is art. Contrasts and dynamics learn to appreciate the song as a whole.
@UmbraFracta Here's a little fact about art: It's highly subjective. You either like it or you don't, but it's arrogant to disqualify an art form just because you don't like it.
I liked this before I saw the video. I just don't like the flashes of porn on it. Other than that; this album is phenomenal. I think my favorite album is still Marrow Of the Bone.
@SmexiiNinja I agree. I felt it was the best song on the album -- I have no idea why they choose to undermine good music with unnecessary shock value.
i'm so obsessed with the riffs in this song. not to mention kyo's voice is just crazy. i'm always in awe how he can scream and shriek like that and still be able to sing.
Damn... O_O Is it just me or has Kyo's screaming become nearly inhuman sounding? I mean it's awesome, but damn, man... It's slightly frightening that he can even make those high pitched screeches.
So I'm pretty new when it comes to Dir En Grey but what would be a good suggestion album wise for one of their albums that has more of this metal sound to it.
Dir en grey are amazing at capturing emotions at their rawest and finest, even if I can't understand what they're saying I don't need to because of how excellent they express it
I think this video is a great double meaning. Scream for Truth is all about questioning things that people try to tell you are acceptable. It's common to see a clip about a girl getting raped by some monster because for some reason, some people find it "sexy". The way rape is portrayed in media you'd think it was something to be taken lightly. I also always loved how the girl somehow ends up enjoying it. And yet the men getting raped in this video don't seem to enjoy it much, did they?
Just a hunch, but do you think this song could be a reaction to the Fukushima situation? They released this video around the time that they released their open letter to the world regarding the nuclear disaster. The images and words in this song and video strongly hint towards my suspicions. Stop me if I'm wrong...
@xxfailure It is EXACTLY about it. They are under the impression that the Japanese government is lying about the health effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. This video is full of symbolism beneath the hentai-tentacles and zombified faces.
@porcelainmorge if dir en grey become zombies i would let them eat me and not even put up a fight "its an honor to be devoured by you all OUCH MY SPLEEN!
@ItsAboutWhatUDo It's about the earthquake and the nuclear waste. I'm sure you've heard of their project, "Scream For The Truth"? This song is really supposed to point it out, and the whole octo-rape is supposed to show how Japan has been forcefully voilated. It's one of the comments for the vid somewhere ^^;
Kyo should make an album with solely singing. It would be cool for the fan who enjoy his singing voice :D

People who say Kyo should sing more, fail to realize that the singing parts are made more beautiful due to how brutal the rest of the song is. From 3:42 on wards there is no words to describe that. This is art. Contrasts and dynamics learn to appreciate the song as a whole.
jquezada12 1 month ago 50
@jquezada12 No. Gauze was art; Macabre was art; most of Kisou, and Vulgar were art; The Final was art. This barely even qualifies as music.
UmbraFracta 3 weeks ago
@UmbraFracta That was simple music. This is more complex, and they put way more emotion into music than before. The same goes for Uroboros.
MikyWrita 3 weeks ago
@UmbraFracta Here's a little fact about art: It's highly subjective. You either like it or you don't, but it's arrogant to disqualify an art form just because you don't like it.

@jquezada12 well said...im glad there are people like me that understand something so simple in all reality...ahhh the guitar solo <3

I liked this before I saw the video. I just don't like the flashes of porn on it. Other than that; this album is phenomenal. I think my favorite album is still Marrow Of the Bone.
SmexiiNinja 1 month ago
@SmexiiNinja I agree. I felt it was the best song on the album -- I have no idea why they choose to undermine good music with unnecessary shock value.

Damn... O_O Is it just me or has Kyo's screaming become nearly inhuman sounding? I mean it's awesome, but damn, man... It's slightly frightening that he can even make those high pitched screeches.

Stop me if I'm wrong...
xxfailure 3 months ago 4
@xxfailure It is EXACTLY about it. They are under the impression that the Japanese government is lying about the health effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. This video is full of symbolism beneath the hentai-tentacles and zombified faces.

ItsAboutWhatUDo 4 months ago
@ItsAboutWhatUDo It's about the earthquake and the nuclear waste. I'm sure you've heard of their project, "Scream For The Truth"? This song is really supposed to point it out, and the whole octo-rape is supposed to show how Japan has been forcefully voilated. It's one of the comments for the vid somewhere ^^;
