Great talent, but in the end he was just another drunk crying in his beer. Stories from some of the bar keeps at the former Palmer Pub paint him as an asshole. But the man could spin a yarn...
Recently, I found a terrific photo of Dad wearing his Strikers uniform (the team he talks about in the video). I don't think YouTube allows links in "comments," so if you want to see it, google my name (David Royko) to get to my website, and go to the "Miscellaneous Mike Royko" section and then "Royko at the Goat -- Scott Jacobs' short video of Dad in his natural environment."
The 8 anthologies of Royko's columns are: Up Against It; I May Be Wrong But I Doubt It; Slats Grobnik and Some Other Friends; Like I Was Sayin'; Dr. Kookie, You're Right!; Sez Who? Sez Me; For the Love of Mike; One More Time. There's also "Boss," and two biographies: "The World of Mike Royko" and "Royko, A Life in Print."
I sure miss Mike Royko, his writings, his humor and insights. In 1994 during my second year of law school, a friend wrote him a letter and told him I had no television and had no idea how to watch a ball game. He sent me a hilarious letter full of typical Royko advice. Unfortunately that letter, one of my prized possessions, was destroyed in a fire shortly after his passing in 1997. Rest in peace my friend, probably writing a satire about Heaven right now.
Even though he had money and powerful friends, he was right at home in the local saloon talking sports and telling stories. Too bad he hated doing TV. That's why there is so little video on him.
Do you have anything of his TV or radio interview with Harry Caray and Jimmy Pearsall... the one before White Sox management(Reisdorf/Einhorn) yanked Pearsall, please? Thanx.
Do you mean to say that it was you, son, who was stealing my paper every day? And to think I had to learn about it from a youtube comment. Why didn't you say anything when I had that neighbor boy, Jacobson, arrested for the theft? Now I really regret mowing the lawn every day with the paper in my back pocket. I wish I could say I love Mike Royko, but I never got a chance to read any of his columns since my boy was stealing my paper.
Yes, he is. And even though thousands of people loved his columns, relatively few people were acquainted with the sound of his voice. That's what I value so much about this video: the chance to hear his voice. Thank you so much for posting this.
I noticed that you liked the Royko at the Goat video. If you are interested, a better quality DVD is available for $12.95 through The Week Behind, an online web zine.
Mike was classic! Wish he was still around ... I'd love to read his columns on politics today!

I wish Royko were still around--he would be having a field day right now.

I think he rolled over in his grave when he learned that Chicago didn't get the 2016 Olympics!

Nah, nonsense - Royko would've seen that as another boondoggle of graft & handouts for Daley and the New Machine
Royko forever.

He was unique, was the all-time king of dialogue.
Slats: " I gotta get out of Chicago. 10 murders a day mean my number might be up."
Mike: Who do think will hit you: Mexican Mafia?" Russian mob?
Slats: "The one which quota is down that day. Do ya' think God keeps count?" Mike: "That's a tough one."
Slats: "Ya' know, come to think of it, God is too busy on account of keeping up with the ex-Cub Factor."
Mike. "Could be."
Slats: " I still gotta scram!" Rooskies, Mex. Ouch."

That was Mike being Mike.
He was raised in a saloon.
Even though he had money and powerful friends, he was right at home in the local saloon talking sports and telling stories. Too bad he hated doing TV. That's why there is so little video on him.

Thank you for this post. A national treasure talking about the good human nature. And the way he talks is poetic.
