  • This is funny. I wasn't even looking for you tonight. I was just looking up some Be Bop Deluxe for the 1st time probably forever, and there you are. Another one of those groups that I would not have known of if it wern't for you. Even in the Senior yearbook one of the end sayings for each senior is "Could you imagine him without_______" and mine was filled in by someone else who said Be Bop Deluxe

  • @Quantanthead Well, and here I would have thought it would be Genesis! Cool!

  • brings back great memories...very well done.

  • Love it, brilliant. I was even singing the echoes on the lyrics.

    Thanks for posting. Viva BBD!!

  • @spartacusvikinga Haha! Great...glad you liked it...we'll have to do a duet some day! Viva BBD indeed!!!

  • Thanks for putting this tremendous cover up, spot on.

Be Bop Deluxe were another brilliant british band, clever lyrics and top rate musicians.

Folks check out Jim's great rendition of an Elvis Costello classic.

  • @ruso9660 Thank you so much for the great compliments, I really appreciate it!

  • Awesome you do Be Bop and Bill justice!

  • Great to hear your version.

  • Excellent jim !!!,I've been a Be Bop Deluxe fan since around 1975 !!,and on my channel is my rendition of ships in the night,I made my own backing track, and in fact, have re recorded it,since my video on here !!

  • @terrysteward Thanks! I think it was 1976 when I first heard "Fair Exchange" on the radio, which was lucky for me as Be Bop never really made a mark here in the USA. "Ships" is such a great song...I'm away from my high-speed connection for now, but will check out your rendition first chance I get.

  • brilliant rendition jim, as you've put the chords up i might have try myself, could take some time, ha ha

  • @smokehogg Thank you! Actually, once you get the basic chord moves memorized, it's not too hard a song to play...but it never fails to make me smile when I do! ;-)

  • @Dackycat

This isn't a standard tuning, is it? I'd love to learn this song. Thanks for your rendition.

  • @TAHart52 Hey, sorry i didn't see your question till now. Yes, it is in standard tuning. The only altered tuning I'm aware Bill Nelson ever used was Drop D (Islands of the Dead.) If you check out my previous comment to bilhama0 you'll see my discussion of the intro/main riff chords. Hope that helps! :-)

  • That was sweet. I can really hear Bill coming thru your music.

  • @lonelylondonladfan So nice of you to say that...Bill's music has always touched me in a very personal way.

  • Credit where credit is due, its a great effort - thanks for the chord breakdown - i'll work on it and maybe post a version!! Saw Bill play live in my hometown (Sheffield - UK) only 2 weeks ago - a magical night with Bill playing solo guitar to some great visuals in the background - i've posted some youtube clips (apologies for the quality it was taken on my iphone) - search Bill Nelson Sensoria festival if you are interested. All the best mate.

  • @bilhama0 I would love to see your version...post it! :-) I live in a small town near Buffalo NY, USA, but I have never had a chance to see Bill live. That would be a real pleasure. He's such a multi-faceted artist: Be Bop, Red Noise, solo work, soundtracks, plus his photography and drawings. Would love to meet him someday. Take care my friend!

  • What a performance mate - absolutely brilliant - Bill Nelson guitar but dare i say it a better voice!! (sorry Bill) - any chance you can give me the chord breakdown? I can work out most from the video but i'm not sure about the intro chords.

  • @bilhama0 What a tremendous compliment, thanks! I am definitely inspired by Bill to sing better. The intro is basically an A-D-E progression, with some sliding up and down between the D and E chords. The chords: A - x0222x, D - x0423x, E - x0645x, I barre the A with my index finger then hammer on (and off) the other notes with middle and pinkie to form the other chords. I play a pick-up note at the beginning, which is the 2nd fret 4th string E note in the A chord. Hope this helps! :-)

  • Wow...you gave it such a fresh sound.

Just excellent. I love your tone.

  • @redmoonspider Thanks for the lovely comments! One thing I have always tried very hard to achieve in playing guitar is getting good tone, so I really appreciate that!

  • Brilliant, love it, one of my favourites too. So good to hear it done so well, thanks.

  • @chrispilmore Thanks! I just LOVE this song and playing a great song always makes it easier to sound good! ;-)

  • Excellent :)

  • Very nicely done

  • You can tell a good band when you remove all the squealing electric guitars and the song still sounds fantastic.
