It's not a dobro or a dulcimer, it's an accoustic lap steel also called a weissenborn. John is playing on a weissenborn designed by Mister Ben Harper!

the one that ben usually plays is a pre-world war II era instrument.

It looks to be a standard slide guitar. The neck is hollow all the way up and you use a metal bar to push down on the strings. Ben Harper plays the same type of guitar. He uses Weisenborn guitars which were made predominantly in the 1920's and 30's.
