No offense to the musicians, but to the 45 year old JUDGE: how is that the "Best Song"? And how is the "Most Creative" one creative at all? I mean, the band & video are fine, but what's so creative about a band walking around Venice Beach in a video? (Ironically, the video for the lame song that won "best song" is much more creative than the one that won "Most Creative," and yet the song in the "Most Creative" is better than the "Best Song" (though that's not hard, since that song is weak).

This is my last comment on the issue. But Jimmy Kimmel is currently doing a contest for an unsigned band. When you go on the website it clearly says "YOU CANNOT BE SIGNED TO ANY LABEL" that is how a contest should be done with defined rules not this Bullshit

My band didn't win either, and yes I think we're as good or better than the ones that won, but I won't complain, because if we had won, we would have been the band people are complaining about. And that's not fair to the bands. They didn't run the contest, they only entered.
I don't have a problem with the winners or contest. I'm sure they realize the problems and will fix them for their next contest. The Maldroid video was awesome, and probably took hundreds of hours of work. I also thought the "Gets So Hard" video by Roses was as good as any video and song I saw in that category. Most live performances I saw were just a guy in front of a camera, or someone filming a band with a camera on a tripod. I'm not into rap, but that video and song was good. Congrats.

The Greenland song sounds like the typical, dull, bland, generic crap that is played on the radio non-stop. The Best Music Video Award might as well have been given to Roy Lichtenstein. The Ostrich Head video isn't creative in anyway whatsoever: it looks exactly like every other rap video, only on a smaller budget.

It's nice to see the comments returning to intelligent thoughtout opinions. All the mud slinging is unnecessary and non productive.There were votes counted and judges who made a decision. So why not just congradulate those who won and encourage those who didn't to keep on trying.There is a lot of untapped talent out there .Individual likes and dislikes are what make us all different. The groups that won it was their time.And when it's yours it will happen.
the winners of this contest are those of us who say, "it's time for a change in what we call the music industry - let's take this in a new direction."
and in the next few months, we'll look back at this contest and really be able to say that the youtube web platform was instrumental in changing the way music is promoted and performed on the internet.
I found the interface the main problem. It was hard to navigate. Not only that I found it very time consuming and tedious. Not only were the selections jumbled into a garbage bin, but it was so frustrating just listening to poor performances.
we need original music, original beats, original lyrics - and at least youtube has stepped into the middle of that "discussion" and hosted a forum to see what is out there. and i am encouraged in a very big way by this contest, because if you really think about it - anyone can get exposure now, you don't have to be signed, you don't have to have connections - you just need to be good - and the winners of this contest are not just the ones in the winners circle.
YouTube is really amazing for just that reason. I started a few months ago promoting my friends band here and took some liberties at the beginning getting some exposure but for months I havent touched a thing and its two to three hundred views everyday. It blew the guys in the band away. So they didnt win this. In the end its all about the fans anyways. I like your stuff by the way.
but youtube is made up of humans, and sure, someone had to sponsor the prizes for this contest, so of course the sponsors have to be pleased with the results at the end of the contest - but like i said, there is so much fighting about music these days because the overall quality has gone down so much -
someone needs to fix the american music scene, that's for sure - and i encourage musicians on youtube to perhaps look at this contest in another way: youtube took the unprecedented and bold step to initiate a new direction in the music industry - whether you understand this or not at the moment, media is changing - ipods won't be here forever, either -
youtube had a lot of problems pulling this contest off, and i think that has to do with how high emotions run when we have contests like this - ultimately, contests are flawed, recognizing the efforts of some over others - winners and losers, honestly, in the end - who cares?
my opinion is that quality will always rise to the top, and if people like what you have to offer, you will always find an audience.
well if no one loses then that means no one wins. and if no one can be a winner than that means that all music is equal meaning that no one band is better than another. the whole point behind a contest is to find the best or loudest or weirdest or whatever.
i learned a lot from this contest. i met people from europe, and i had the opportunity to show my song to over 18,000 people - for me, that's a good thing. youtube didn't run the contest as planned, but you should take into account the fact that google purchased youtube while this contest was just getting going - a lot of important changes were happening at youtube while this contest was going on.
the problem with this contest in my opinion has to do with the following:
the condition of music in america is probably at an all-time low. music industry execs don't even know what to do about it. there are thousands and thousands of musicians in america who deserve to be heard - unfortunately, no one on the internet has truly uncovered a way to give everybody equal exposure.

Most likely the majority of votes for the winners and semifinalists either came from (1) their own fans, or (2) for the 3 videos in "honorable mention" that were featured before the contest began, a percentage of the massive number of normal viewers those videos got. Remember: to be considered, your video had to be in the top 20 finalists.
From that list of finalists, "Alexandra Patsavas of Chop Shop Music Supervision, whose work on The O.C. and Grey's Anatomy has drawn rave reviews for breaking new bands," picked the four winners.

but youtube is made up of humans, and sure, someone had to sponsor the prizes for this contest, so of course the sponsors have to be pleased with the results at the end of the contest - but like i said, there is so much fighting about music these days because the overall quality has gone down so much -

someone needs to fix the american music scene, that's for sure - and i encourage musicians on youtube to perhaps look at this contest in another way: youtube took the unprecedented and bold step to initiate a new direction in the music industry - whether you understand this or not at the moment, media is changing - ipods won't be here forever, either -

youtube had a lot of problems pulling this contest off, and i think that has to do with how high emotions run when we have contests like this - ultimately, contests are flawed, recognizing the efforts of some over others - winners and losers, honestly, in the end - who cares?
my opinion is that quality will always rise to the top, and if people like what you have to offer, you will always find an audience.

well if no one loses then that means no one wins. and if no one can be a winner than that means that all music is equal meaning that no one band is better than another. the whole point behind a contest is to find the best or loudest or weirdest or whatever.

i learned a lot from this contest. i met people from europe, and i had the opportunity to show my song to over 18,000 people - for me, that's a good thing. youtube didn't run the contest as planned, but you should take into account the fact that google purchased youtube while this contest was just getting going - a lot of important changes were happening at youtube while this contest was going on.

the problem with this contest in my opinion has to do with the following:
the condition of music in america is probably at an all-time low. music industry execs don't even know what to do about it. there are thousands and thousands of musicians in america who deserve to be heard - unfortunately, no one on the internet has truly uncovered a way to give everybody equal exposure.

My son is in OSTRICHHEAD, and I am very proud of him, as well as the rest of the group. They work very hard writing, producing, and performing their music. They deserved to win, and thank you to every one who was kind enough to say the same. Congratulations to the rest of the winners, too.

The Voting was done so poorly. How could people possibly go through 3000 videos listening to each and everyone and voting? Find a better way to do this next time.
3000 x 3 mins. apprx = 9000 minutes = 150 hours....screw that, Im not gonna spend 150 hours voting for bands on youtube. As I said earlier, POORLY DONE.

first find a video entered, ("that's the way it is" for example - which is being featured right now) then once on the video's page click on the youtube underground icon in the upper right. You'll be brought to the voting area, but now its been reorganized by numbers of votes - 1 has most, 2 second most and so on. The other three winning videos were in the top 20 as promised.

Most likely the majority of votes for the winners and semifinalists either came from (1) their own fans, or (2) for the 3 videos in "honorable mention" that were featured before the contest began, a percentage of the massive number of normal viewers those videos got. Remember: to be considered, your video had to be in the top 20 finalists.
