Can anyone confirm that Gerry did not attend his own mother , Mary Skeffingtons funeral in Paisley........ I have it on good authority from one of his cousins that he did not.
Rough listening to this - had completely forgotten the intro was a very old hymn "Sweet Sacrament Divine" a favourite of my mother-in-law's and sung at her funeral recently
It makes me so sad that Gerry Rafferty has gone, listening to this track just says so much about the quality of a singer/songwriter that he was, so sadly he should be missed. God love you Gerry
Gerry, i wished i could haved made your funeral just to say thanks for all your wonderful music. i loved everthing you done you made me proud to be scottish.
I have this song on an imported 'Best of GR 1970-1982' but it is a different version! Can anybody explain which version is what? A nice song about his Mum.
I bought The Best of British Folk circa 1990 and this song instantly catch me, and so it does till today, along with others that I didn´t knew, like Gryphon, Pentagle, Dave Swarbrick... It´s hard to believe someone with such young a voice can ever die.
One of the songs I sung myself long ago. Admired Gerry for his unique voice and wonderful songs. His heart has run dry and he is not going to be an engine driver as he pointed out in Rick Rack. Who knows what the day will bring it could bring anything. Who knows if we ll still be here we could be there. Today my heart cries for a friend I had and never met.
@jojopuppyfish The vinyl album Can I have my money back from 1971 was also released on CD in Germany (Ariola Express 290 813) in 1991. Greetings from Germany
@jopagerichard Just got the cd and you are incorrect. The version on (Ariola Express 290 813 is different than the vinyl. Seems like the vinyl is the only place to get this version.
@jojopuppyfish yes, this version is different from the version on the original CD with that picture on the cover, although the latter became my favorite now.
@jojopuppyfish I have the '91 cd version you mention and also the '96 remastered release on Castle/Wooden Hill Recordings and it's still the electric piano (?) one. Strange.
@jojopuppyfish Thanks very much for the info. Just had a quick look on their Uk site and they have the album (same one i think.... 20 tracks? on the Spectrum Cheapo label from '08). Even if it's not the same one the other folky songs look good as well and it only cost £2.99 (which equates to your 4 american dollars), so you can't really go wrong at that price. Cheers again.
@jojopuppyfish Woops!!! Hopefully the Spectrum company have just re-issued the same vinyl transfer to cd recording.......he hopes! No worries if it's not as there's another 18 songs on the cd i've never heard. Cheers anyway for the additonal info.
Would have to disagree with you on that point. Gerry wrote this song for his mother after his father had passed away. And whilst Allan Clarke's version is excellent, it doesn't come close to this original version.
I remember both Billy and Gerry appearing at Prestwick Swimming pool away back in the 70's(now demolished)
Gerry used to sing this song around the local folk clubs with Billy shouting " Sing ya bastards:. in the backgrounds. Can't believe the years have gone so fast.. Anybody else remember the folk club in the Caledonian Hotel Ayr on a sunday night when Billy refined his act.
Clear something up for me Jim, I have the cd remaster of Can I Have My Money Back? from '96 but that version of Mary Skeffington sounds slightly different to this one ie. there's electric piano I think and it's more prominent than the acoutsic guitar. The vocals sound the same though?
David, the original album version is the one you hear here, the later version was remixed without any input by Gerry. This is the way that Gerry intended it to sound.
Thanks for clearing that up for me Alan. Yeah I remember hearing a stripped down version of the song in the STV documentary about GR that was shown back in 2001. It was just him and Rab Noakes in a room, strumming and harmonising away, sounded great. Strange they didn't just transfer/remaster the orig version of the album but it's still good all the same.
Gorgeous. Beautiful song.

A wonderful song beautifully sung by Gerry, for whom, I understand, it had great personal importance.
I love this version, and the one by the sublime 'Livvy', but the finest interpretation, in my view is by the magnificent Allan Clarke.
