  • It makes me so sad that Gerry Rafferty has gone, listening to this track just says so much about the quality of a singer/songwriter that he was, so sadly he should be missed. God love you Gerry

  • Anyone heard the Olivia Newton-John version? It's very, very good. I love Gerry's version, and yes he wrote it, but I prefer Olivia's version.

RIP, Gerry...we lost a great one when you passed.

  • I bought The Best of British Folk circa 1990 and this song instantly catch me, and so it does till today, along with others that I didn´t knew, like Gryphon, Pentagle, Dave Swarbrick... It´s hard to believe someone with such young a voice can ever die.

  • thanks for everything, rest in peace

  • Just so lovely, and so Gerry Rafferty. Love you Gerry.XX

  • Beautiful stuff Gerry .r.i.p

  • Beutiful tribute to his Mum ,wish i could have written this!!!! for my Mother,a true genius.

  • One of the songs I sung myself long ago. Admired Gerry for his unique voice and wonderful songs. His heart has run dry and he is not going to be an engine driver as he pointed out in Rick Rack. Who knows what the day will bring it could bring anything. Who knows if we ll still be here we could be there. Today my heart cries for a friend I had and never met.

  • Mary Skeffington was his mom's name

  • What a Cracking song. The record company should re release this in his memory.RIP Gerry.

  • Blimey, So sad , Could nobody have helped him? Sad loss AND TEARS IN EYES

  • This is my favorite Rafferty´s song. Go to sleep tonight. Thanks for your music.

  • Mary Skeffington was his Mum. This fellow sang with a voice of silk. His lyrics are so touching. So many fine songs.

A wonderful talent, now departed. RIP

  • RIP Gerry. Most people won't remember this one but for some reason it meant a lot to me back then.

Thank you very much for posting this.

  • I like Allan Clarke's version! but then I like Gerry Rafferty's version.....FIGHT!!!!!!!

  • a very ferguslie moment.... read esp

  • gerry is a wealth. not to be measured in euros or pounds. cool whit!

  • Is this version on cd anywhere?

  • @jojopuppyfish The vinyl album Can I have my money back from 1971 was also released on CD in Germany (Ariola Express 290 813) in 1991. Greetings from Germany

  • @jopagerichard Just got the cd and you are incorrect. The version on (Ariola Express 290 813 is different than the vinyl. Seems like the vinyl is the only place to get this version.

  • This song is available on the compilation CD: Clowns to the Left, Jokers to the Right: 1970-1982

    © 1997 Raven

  • @silver6054 - This Cd has been renamed Days Gone Down: the anthology 1970-1982

  • @jojopuppyfish yes, this version is different from the version on the original CD with that picture on the cover, although the latter became my favorite now.

  • @jojopuppyfish I have the '91 cd version you mention and also the '96 remastered release on Castle/Wooden Hill Recordings and it's still the electric piano (?) one. Strange.

  • @DCHurlford1 I found this title, the vinyl version on a cd called "Best of British Folk" on the Label "Castle" from 1989 It sells on Amazon for $4

  • @jojopuppyfish Thanks very much for the info. Just had a quick look on their Uk site and they have the album (same one i think.... 20 tracks? on the Spectrum Cheapo label from '08). Even if it's not the same one the other folky songs look good as well and it only cost £2.99 (which equates to your 4 american dollars), so you can't really go wrong at that price. Cheers again.

    (David).

  • @DCHurlford1 Its ASIN # B00008EY31 in Amazon USA & the UK Cd says its from 1992 and its the Castle Music UK label 24 tracks

  • @jojopuppyfish Woops!!! Hopefully the Spectrum company have just re-issued the same vinyl transfer to cd recording.......he hopes! No worries if it's not as there's another 18 songs on the cd i've never heard. Cheers anyway for the additonal info.

  • ¡Maravillosa canción!!!

    Wonderful song!!!

  • thank you gerry

  • A wonderful song beautifully sung by Gerry, for whom, I understand, it had great personal importance.

I love this version, and the one by the sublime 'Livvy', but the finest interpretation, in my view is by the magnificent Allan Clarke.

  • Would have to disagree with you on that point. Gerry wrote this song for his mother after his father had passed away. And whilst Allan Clarke's version is excellent, it doesn't come close to this original version.

  • gratulation for the song

  • I remember both Billy and Gerry appearing at Prestwick Swimming pool away back in the 70's(now demolished)

Gerry used to sing this song around the local folk clubs with Billy shouting " Sing ya bastards:. in the backgrounds. Can't believe the years have gone so fast.. Anybody else remember the folk club in the Caledonian Hotel Ayr on a sunday night when Billy refined his act.

  • Such a beautiful song - very acoustic and folky from Gerry. Lovely harmonies - what a great song, great lyrics.

  • lovely song.. there are lots like this on the album

  • i believe there is a version of this lovely song on the b side of a single

  • Clear something up for me Jim, I have the cd remaster of Can I Have My Money Back? from '96 but that version of Mary Skeffington sounds slightly different to this one ie. there's electric piano I think and it's more prominent than the acoutsic guitar. The vocals sound the same though?

    David.

  • David, the original album version is the one you hear here, the later version was remixed without any input by Gerry. This is the way that Gerry intended it to sound.

  • Thanks for clearing that up for me Alan. Yeah I remember hearing a stripped down version of the song in the STV documentary about GR that was shown back in 2001. It was just him and Rab Noakes in a room, strumming and harmonising away, sounded great. Strange they didn't just transfer/remaster the orig version of the album but it's still good all the same.

    David.

  • Does anyone no were Gerry went??? ma mum just told me the other day hes blood , hes ma cousin :XD ma mums name is Mary:XD ma name is shannon quinn:XD

    Sx

  • Ohhhhhhh.....I luv this song!

  • His sound reminds me of John Lennon

  • What a voice!

  • Takes me back to my Grannys house in Candren Road Ferguslie.

  • One of my favourites

  • Great one Captain *****
