  • We get your point. I have a problem in that I could not get my format into anything YT would take. Uploaded a trail version of a formatting service. Now this footage has a big red flashing ad of this company on it. I have no idea how to remove it. Any suggestions on how to do this or is it lost.???

  • hmm, well if it has been uploaded with the flashing ad then I'd say you are stuck with. I had thought YT was fairly flexible with the formats it accepted though so I'd have thought basic windows moviemaker would be good enough for editing/exporting footage

  • That can't be right, 4 minutes equals 2 or 3 GB? How? My pc only has 60GB. 500 is tons. No idea how video footage is taking up so much space, never had that on any webcam or handycam. Not that I'm an expert but that is astounding.

  • yep it is astounding but I think the reason is that I bought a new cam recently and it's a hi-def one and it's the picture quality (which you lose on uploading to YT anyway) that is causing it to take up so much space.

With my old cam I'd get 20 mins from 4 GB

  • 60 effing gigs of footage??? Holy jebus!

  • and that doesn't include the footage still on tape that has not yet been imported onto my MAC or PC - I could probably tape no new footage for the rest of the year and still post a couple of videos a week!

  • I'm sorry mate, but i found that very funny.

A very entertaining vlog. It does prove though, that we all seem to have similar problems with HD space etc. I'm thinking of buying a second external HD myself :)

  • If you didn't have to have every video in cinema quality...ffs!

  • since when was being a perfectionist a crime... ffs

  • well not a crime but it'd be nice to see the end of a series within a year of the first one.. ffs!

  • look, is this your way of saying you're fed up with waiting to hear the response to your 'Evening With' question? And all good things to those that wait... ffs!

  • ummm, I don't think this is the first series to wait in vain for it's entirety...case in point... bet you have more Vegas footage left.

  • My balls are up too, Cat.

..Yeah, I'm going to bring that up every time I comment your videos.

  • My camera records 640x480 AVIs, these AVIs can't be played by Windoze Meedia Player. I edit them in QuickTime, save as a MOV and the size doubles. Save the same file from QT as an uncompressed high quality AVI and it's 10x the size of the original file??? I then convert the MOV to a good quality WMV and the files drop to roughly 30% of their original size. What I keep is the original unsigned raw AVI files (sometimes) and the final WMV (always).

  • These days YT seems to be smashing my 640x480 vids worse than those I uploaded at 320x240 but the high quality view is better than a 320x240... If my QT MOV is below the 100meg limit I'll often upload that without taking the time to compress and the final output on YT is better for it. That's where my experimentation ends as none of my computers are compatable with the YT multi-uploader software. And I can't afford to buy/build on a new computer just to run a badly designed FTP client.

  • Look I watched you & John during Lost... thats an automatic gauge to just how good ya are, to me. Great to hear ya again and nice file type size discussions!

  • lol greedo sucks balls hehe

  • it's true he does

  • A video response is coming, this was classic lol

  • cheers John although I didn't mean you had to respond to this video. And perhaps I should apply the AndyMooseman challenge to this video and see what I come up with ;)

  • 2G for 2 minutes? Are you out of your mind? You don't need to make such high q files for YT. For YT I use the standard iMovie "CD-ROM export" (320 x 240, 15 fps) and it's just right for here - YT screws up higher resolution exports! Saves space too.

  • Ken, I'm posting a video response to this and I hate to beg, but I'd love for you to see it because I'd like to address this comment you made on the video and why I'm a complete failure at working with 320x240 :) - John

  • Ken to be honest I had no idea until I made this video that the file size was so large, basically FCE imports video files from my hard drive cam and until tonight (I'd never really looked properly though) I'd never managed to find out where the file was stored on the MAC which was several sub folders in. I will be changing the format that I record/import in from now.

  • I am half way through my second terabyte external HD with video now... ~750 gigabytes of video.... Picasa helps but it is still interesting finding specific footage at times... I have made 1100 videos and I have a few outstanding projects...

But I think we must run our cams as events occure and update YT as we can...

  • good way of looking at it Pappy

  • 21stcat the reason why it looks grainy indoors is because you need more light or adjust the contrast in editing it works for me

  • really? I'll give it a try but i had always thought that once I started uploading MPEG-4 the preferred format my worried would be over, but I'll give it a go.

  • hahaha aw I happen to like your vlogs they're entertaining =] sorry if you've answered this before but what do you use to edit your videos? =] xx

  • to think you worked on this video for 5 hours and never made it to the telly - all you had to do was upload an image and then add that description over there LOL - but then we wouldn't have had the chuckle.

  • I have lots of raw footage in my head - trapping your head in the kitchen door doesn't help compress it I find.

  • I have hours of vlog just like that!

    I usually don't upload it though. :)

  • is there a remedial version of the text in the description? LOL

  • P.S. I did read the entire video description.. but can't remember the reference to two takes in one of your video's? I thought this was a very thorough response to JR#1 - And I found it interesting.

  • An obscure reference but it was Part 2 of the Christmas Special where I say to Mr Funny "are you angry because we're doing 2 takes" and he says "no, I'm just watching the telly!"

  • You had me LOL-ing by leaving some takes unedited! My username is pronounced: Kish-nyoo-si.

When I joined YT I had no idea I'd ever be part of a community (period) & hence people would stuggle to pronounce that Hungarian word ;-) ! 60 gig worth of content.. WoW! You're too hard on yourself re: vlogging. I barely ever do anything in one take. You're human -join the "experienced with hindsight" club, sit back and enjoy a football game while the MAC is compressing ;-)

  • invest in stacks of blank dvd's and grape juice and all your problems will be solved.

  • hold on... no grape juice comment? Oh yeah, I remember - a new beginning ;)

  • somebody had to be the last one... but it wasnt you. you were second to last that the old gilligan commented to

  • there is an archiver called kgb what can convert a gb file to 50mb but it takes forever you need good ram and a good processor :D

  • Wait....what was your point? ;) I know with my photography I should shoot in raw but then I'd only have so much space but the shots would be better quality... but there'd be fewer... ARUGGGHHH. Too many decisions!

  • And I read a bit more. . . football sucks :P Americans don't even know what it is-so it's hardly a challenge to beat them!

And mov and avi files are space sucking aliens!

I recently uploaded a vlog at just under 200 MB as i remembered that was now possible on YT and I didn't need to compress-but the quality I ended up with was awful! And it takes a while for the 'watch in better quality' thing to appear :/

  • Ok, I just watched the latest Andypliskin video where he talks about the new 'insight feature' on YT and why does video say you are responsible for a high proportion of the views? I thought something was odd about the numbers this was getting ;)

  • Sorry didn't read the little description bit! :D

  • I don't blame you, it would be quicker to read a short book ;)

  • Convert to avi! :D

  • you're kidding? avi files are humongous!

  • hahahaha, your discomfort with the vlogging medium is hilarious to me!

    hahaha! Zzzzzz!

I use one minidvd at a time, half an hour footage. The only disk I saved files on was my sisters wedding. The rest I kept on my computer. I delete a lot of raw footage after I have used it. There is a lot of family stuff I want to keep as memories. But most of that I save on wmv. Only my fecking sister gets the save it original treatment >:(

  • I had my motherboard just die on me at christmas, and I might have lost all the info on the hardrive. I've put it aside for evaluation when John can get here to try and rescue it for me-I got a new motherboard from a shop, but if they'd used my old harddrive they'd have re-formatted it.

BTW, you are a geek, but then I know you know that :)

  • well I'm glad my discomfort brought you some amusement, and surely a bad but funny Vlog is better than watching one that's just bad?

Anyway John should feel honoured, I could have edited any number of videos tonight where I would have looked cool, calm and collected but I chose this one which showed me for the vlogging amateur that I am ;)

  • I enjoy your vlogs :) They are far above bad.

And I'm sure John will indeed appreciate your response. . . I know you could have edited this to make yourself look calmer, cooler and more collected-You know that people love the fumbling with vlogging thing :P

  • ha ha you can see right through me ;)

  • You're intentionally mixing things up on your channel while mine is just mixed up. And my hindsight isn't always so wonderful.

Hey, vlogging is hard business, so I can empathize. But, actually, you're better at it than you give yourself credit.

There are lots of words and stuff in the video description box.

Reading stings my eyes and makes me cry.

    Tra la la...

  • just read the abridged answer! I gave up :)

  • To be honest Curt I suppose I could have spent a lot longer editing this (and this took long enough to edit anyway) and made myself look a lot slicker with lots of short cuts but I kind of figure that vlogging 'should' at least try and be done in one take as shown by Gary and Andy Mooseman.

Ok, so I can't do it like them but I'm giving it a go and taking myself out of my comfort zone.

And yes, a lot of text in the video description - you didn't miss much ;)

  • oh damn, I normally read descriptions while I let the vid get a head start, but too long! Will go back!
