WTF was that?! Ha Ha Ha. Some guy arrives at your hotel room with a money bouquet and tells you how rich he is. OK. .. unsuspicious, you let him in and he is followed by waiters with dinner, champagne and candels. Violinists sweep into the room behind them, playing a romantic tune that you've just noticed has been playing all along. This guy clearly has pockets jammed full of condoms. What do you do now? Hilarious!!!!
Berger had a fantasy of "Hollywood" being a place stuck in a 1930's studio publicity timewarp rather than the industry it is. He came thinking everyone worked a little during the day and then met up at each other's houses for the big party later at night (after a cocktail or two at the Trocadero or Brown Derby, natch). When he found out it wasn't like that, rather than acknowledge his own naivete, he carped about it every chance he got for the next 20 years.
The gorgeous Helmut Berger said of his work on DYNASTY that he "cried all the way to the set and laughed all the way to the bank." One of the great actors of our time and a discovery of Luchino Visconti, he didn't have the good fortune of another Visconti discovery, Alain Delon. It was also a shame that Visconti did not leave a will, which would have left his estate to Berger; did the Viscontis take revenge by denying Berger, Visconti's lifelong partner, his rightful legacy?
There was a great deal of press in Europe at the time w/Helmet's stint on Dynasty and his love interest w/Fallon. An established actor in his own right in Europe and long known to be gay his appearance was heavily written about.
Maybe Helmut forgot that this was a television series not a film set. Maybe that might explain his disappointment when arriving in Hollywood.
