The frogs may try to mate with the salamanders, but they cannot produce viable offspring.  Additionally, there are a lot of mechanical barriers that prevent frog sperm from getting to salamander eggs. For example, these frogs have external fertilization, but the newts have internal fertilization.

This is a very interesting video. The Californian newts appear to have love on their minds long before their European cousins.
