It is nothing more than a mistake with the scene. HOWEVER, it is clear the Mr. White pointed his gun and shot Eddy. Take a close look, I saw it the first time around full speed. Not until recently had I heard people didn't know who shot him. Basically went down like this:

1. Joe shot Mr. Orange

2. Mr. White shot Joe

3. Eddy shot Mr. White once

4. During that act, Mr. White shifts his aim at Eddys stomach and fires off one shot.

5. Eddy gets one last shot off as he is hit.

Harvey Keitel probably didn't have time to shoot Chris Penn. The whole thing happened in 1-2 seconds. He just tried to get to shoot those shots fast and didn't swing around to shoot Eddie. And unless in slow motion it does not look like he shot him but who cares that much about that little thing.

I disagree that White's gun was "nowhere near" Nice Guy Eddie. He fires three times, first into Tierney, his second between them, the third apparently hits him. From this angle, it's hard to see it clearly, but one can reasonably believe White hits both of them.

I suspect that QT gets off on hearing people to obsess over his movies, so he's using this poorly-executed scene as an excuse to start up a controversy, kind of like the "Han shot first" incident. But there's not that much there.

I'm doing an analysis of Reservoir Dogs for my degree and all the books that mention it at the official British Film Institute library quote Tarantino as saying Nice Guy Eddie's squib went off early and he fell to the ground before Harvey Keitel had time to point the gun at him.
