You could definetly d it with coffee filters, especially if you don't like the frill of the doilies. They might be thicker than a doily though. Just try one strand and see.

I wonder if you couldn't do a similar chandelier project with coffee filters. If the standard size is too big they make coffee filters for 4 cup mini coffee pots that are smaller. In bulk they would be cheaper than paper doilies and available, I think, at the Dollar Tree.
