The funny thing about this song is that this was in a story told by the so called 'lovely lonley man', so that man said in his story that the lady that was on the beach with them sang a song bout how lovely he aws. Funny lol. Weird lol, Embarrissing lol.
I seen a program about this and Sally Ann Howes was laughing at this scene, she felt absurd as she was playing the "oldest virgin in the world" (she was 37 at the time)
@revolutionary14 me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i thought it was really boring and would always fast forward through it but now i realize how beautiful and amazing it is.
When I was little, I never got this song. Now looking back at it, it was truly amazing. Her voice could easily rival Julie Andrews! This is a classic scene in this movie.
One of the things I love the most about this sequence is that it is not in the 'live' part of the movie, but part of Potts' story on the beach that he tells about the car. But in that wonderful, WIZARD OF OZ-like way, when the film ripples and blurs as the fantasy begins, the action is seamless, and we forget that we are now watching a story-within-a story. It is also special as Ms. Howes' only true solo in the film. Singularly gorgeous.
She is so beautiful she takes your breath away, and easily looks a decade younger than her 38 years. That, plus possessing one of the most extraordinary voices I've ever heard, how could you not fall utterly in love with this woman? What a great talent.
What a showcase for the truly scrumptious Sally Ann Howes: a summer setting in a fantasy garden, a gorgeous 1900's dress, and a beautiful soprano who would make anyone fall in love with her at the end of these 4 minutes. Love the pullback shot at the end with her pushing the swing and running off in the distance.
given the fact that chitty-chitty bang bang and the james bond books were written by ian fleming, and given the fact that albert broccoli produced the movies based on chitty chitty bang bang and some of the james bond books, it seems that broccoli had an affection for fleming stuff. or else broccoli was only trying to make money by using fleming stuff. though chitty--- is not a disney movie, it seems like the kind of movie that disney often made.
This, along with the "Hushabye Mountain" reprise and the "Music Box Doll" sequence, is my favorite moment in the movie--Sally's singing is almost a prayer and she is a summer dream in that gorgeous dress. Breathtaking! Thanks for posting this.
Hi All! PLEASE do not waste your time replying to Juan Macready. He is all over YouTube, spewing vile and vicious comments about:
Dick Van Dyke
Sally Ann Howes
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"
"Mary Poppins"
There is absolutely NO point in arguing with him. He is a pathetic loser who loves to rain on everyone's parade. He will NOT give up. His statements are all LIES and UNTRUTHS. If you were all smart, you would simply mark everyone of his comments as SPAM. He's not worth your time and energy.

this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I adore the movie and am literally in love with sally ann howes. herself and her voice are beautiful. she is my absaloute favourite character in the film and that will never change for me
I cry everytime I hear it... I sing everytime I hear it! One of my favorite songs of all musicals! God Bless the old classic films such as Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang!!
this is just so classy... thats the only way i can put it. her voice is beautiful and this is just such a wholesome story in general i still love it today <3
I adore this song, in the summer holidays i went to norwich and saw the londons production i tohught it was good, but not as amazing as this version, but i ahve to admit i love this whole film everytime i watch it i sing along of mime the words;D
When I was younger there were 3 voices that I wished with all my heart to emulate: Mary Costa (Sleeping Beauty), Julie Andrews, and last but certainly not least, Sally Ann Howes. Whenever I watched this film, I was absolutely mesmerized by her voice both in this heartfelt love song, and in the Hushabye Mtn. reprise. Just as Potts' children adored her, so did I. Truly is one of the best alterations to a story I've ever seen (in the novel, Potts has a wife). Thanks for posting this!
adanarose --What a great tribute! You have picked some pretty tough markers...EXCELLENT choices all! So, perhaps you could "mix" them up in one big bowl, express Gratitude that the same Force that created their gifts also created Yours, Then let 'er rip using your own personal charm and individual and unique talent - sounds like a smashing formula for success to me! Best regards!
I don't know the reason why this song was removed from the national tour that just ended. Why would these sentiments expressed from such heartfelt emotions in a moving melody as this be left out of the musical story? Yes, good questions, all.
@LiztheLark This is the love song of the story and the films best melody. I agree. The fact that this song was taken out of the play was a poor decision. It's the characters only solo.
Beautiful. I always regarded this scene as the 'transitional' moment when the film segued from a lighthearted story about restoring a car to an elaborate Oz-like fantasy. It always gets complaints because it's a slow love song, but I like it because it's staged as an Act 1 finale, after which the film seamlessly picks up on another day (note everyone in different dress, almost like Sunday best) and the film resumes, no longer a reminder that it's just a story being told at a picnic. Gorgeous.
i love this song and video everything is just so sweet and gentle ,sally looks stunning in that dress and she sings like a dream , they dont make films like this anymore sadly
I always thought that "the jump" was because he finished half the story, so they drove back home. Next day, they drive back to the beach to finish the story.
It's a lovely song, and she sings it beautiufly, but it makes no sense in the movie.
Caractacus is telling a story, with Truly sitting right next to him... and in the story, he says Truly goes home and sings a love song about him? That would be slightly awkward.
Not to mention the fact that it makes an awkward jump. They drop her off, she sings the song, and she's suddenly back in the car with them, wearing a different outfit. (And it's supposed to be the same day.)
It's not supposed to be the same day when she's back with them in the car, it's supposed to be a different outing. That's why at the end it goes back to them on the beach, in the same clothing as when the story started.
It's clear when the story starts, because of the transition to alter the appearance of the boat when Potts begins. Anything between then and the return to the beach at the end is all the story.
Thanks, filmlover 10101 for posting this video clip. I find the "Italian" version of this clip has a better video quality than your "English" version. Uh-any way you can switch the English audio to the "Italian" clip, please? This song is, btw, my favorite song of the movie; and I am not the only one. Cuby Broccoli, the producer of this movie and of James Bond movies, liked this song so much when he first heard it, he was moved to tears. It was also his favorite song of the movie, too.
