Alexander the Great fell afoul of Pashtun tribesmen in today's Malakand Agency, where he took an arrow in the leg and almost lost his life.
In a letter to his mother on 330 B.C. described the Pakhtuns/Pathans he writes;
"Am involved in the land of "Leonine" lion-like and brave people, where every foot of the ground is like a wall of steel, confronting my soldier. You have brought only one son into the world, but everyone in this land can be called an Alexander"
"No one ever managed to subdue or unite them: Alexander The Great, Gangez Khan, Persian forces, Mughals forces, Sikhs forces, British forces, Russians forces and USA force have all suffered defeat at their hands"
