And the troops have been in the process of being drawn down since shortly after Obama was elected. When he made this statement no one yet knew the Bush Presidency had put the economy into the verge of collapse. And Obama had that mess to take care of before anything!

Well, there's limited space here to respond, but 1st: Obama is doing what he has to do. He said in his address that were there any way to do it, he would end it now. Bush started the mess there and opened a 2nd war front in Iraq leaving Afghanistan to dangle & revert to being a festering pot for Al Qaeda. Obama is giving the Generals what they said they need to clean things up & finish the job. If they don't succeed as stated, then I believe we will see our President take a different path.

Yes, you have "reports" of 40,000 and up to 80,00 by various "unnamed sources," but the firm number was 34,000 - and UN troops will make up the difference of 4,000.

Obama cannot send more than this country can afford to support. To do so would be a stupid as, well, Bush: Yeah, Hell & Yeehaw just send 'em on in & we'll shake the last bit of change out of the tax-payers pockets.

But even Bush didn't give the Generals troops they asked for until the end of his term & not even then really.

I had no idea that CHANGE simply meant changing from wasting lives, money, resources, etc in Iraq to Afganistan. I would like to see 'change' meaning something more creative than resorting to another senseless war. Yes, I know all about the Middle East. I live in an international community and have friends who have lived in the Middle East. If Russia doesn't attack Afganistan for their resources, it would be realistic to think that the US would do the same thing. I had to move out of Virginia to get medical care. The 'death panels', a.k.a. insurance companies, wouldn't cover my pre-existing condition. It was move to a country that offered healthcare or die. I love America, but can't afford to live there.
