Im Christian, but some of the things this guy says do make sense. I've read the entire Bible twice. For me, it just makes this world make sense. The greatest thing it did for me, was answer the question to the meaning of life.
You may take an ancient book written by men who did not know science and believe it because you are told it is truth. Despite the book coming from men in an unenlightened age, full of superstition, fear and misunderstanding, you may believe it. Or you might, instead, consider the views of men who have the benefit of rational, time proven studies on the evolution of species and see in it some truth. A truth, unclouded by the threats of eternal damnation and pain. Just truth, plain and simple.
posts as angry as is possible. Perhaps you would like me to angry, so you can convert me to your particular lifestyle or form of spiritualism/religion, and thus feel better about yourself. Who knows.
Perhaps you find the "get over yourselves" insulting. Well, religious people insult atheists every day that passes, with religious laws, beheadings, coersion, denial of civil rights for minorities such as the LGBT community. Asking such people to get over oneself in but a small request.
assumption, namely, that belief in God bothers me. I specifically wrote that being angry with people for being religious is like being angry with cancer patients for having cancer. I don't see where you get the idea that I'm angry.
"Blah" here means "etc." We all know what the Christian dogma is, so I shorten it. My point was that many religious people will claim their way of life is the better/only/one true way, which is arbitrary, subjective and contingent.
the belief that cucumbers are the ultimate food. People's preferences for food varies, as do their susceptibility to religious infatuation. Furthermore, some foods are more nutritious than others. Likewise, some means of living your life and contextualizing yourself are better than others. Of course, Christians will deny this. It is central to the Christian faith that Jesus is the only way to blah blah blah. Get over yourselves, please.
@Pomme843 - See, now you're being insulting with your "blah blah blah" and your "get over yourselves" Why does is bother you so much that someone believes in God? I dont care that you dont believe and I certainly wouldn't insult you for you lack of belief, but you take the other road. Bad form my good man...BAD FORM.
@Pomme843 So my contention is there's something called spirituality which may not have anything to do with man made religion. BTW I am not a Christian either. To me spirituality is about orientation in life as a personal experience- (see secular spirituality) -open to new ideas "Where religion ends, spirituality begins" (See WIKI) I might say If you don't attempt self actualization there is not much point in getting oxygen.
There is an old joke "there are no atheists on a sinking ship" Dawkins speaks of surveys, how intelligent scientists are in terms of IQ, and that he wants further research done to prove his hypothesis. Perhaps if he did a survey on how emotionally satisfied atheist scientists are then he might find they are the most angry members of society. Maslows pyramid explains the hierarchy of human needs with self actualization at the top, mans spiritual needs being paramount.
@nandanugent You have obviously misunderstood Maslows pyramid. The reason that self-actualization is on top, is because it is the most superficial, and thus, the last priority. It is the bottom bricks of the pyramid that holds it up. The bottom bricks are also the largest, symbolizing importance. If you don't get oxygen for 10 minutes, there's not much point in actualization of the self.
On another point, the belief that religion is the best means for self actualization, is much like holding
@Pomme843 Self actualisation is at the top because this distinguishes humans from animals whose activities are only eating, sleeping, mating and defending, which are at the bottom of the pyramid. There is more to life than this, don't you think? If we stay on the lower levels of the pyramid then we wont evolve as human beings Also I used the phrase "mans spiritual needs" which you have conflated with religion, substituting spirituality with religion.

Atheists make me sad :( It must be terrible going through life when your only belief is a disbelief. I have talked to more than my share of them in my time, and one thing I notice about all of them is how angry they get when talking about God and Christianity. I will never know what makes them so angry. I guess its because they have NO faith, and nothing to believe in? When the end of days comes there will be thousands of Atheists on their knees crying to my God and asking him for forgiveness
@HardRokMiner There is not a single human being whose only belief is disbelief. Please stop acting so stupid. I've met my share of angry Christians. I mean, make a YT search for "angry atheist", and then for "angry Christian". Religion fosters many very angry individuals, so you can get down from your non-existant, high horse. And no, I'm not angry. Being angry with Christians for Christianity is like being angry with cancer pasients because of cancer. You can't help it. I was once like you.
@Pomme843 U can say U'r "not angry" if U wish, but when U use terms like "stop acting so stupid" & "get down off my non-existant, high horse" I have to disagree with U. yer writing looks angry 2 me. U R right about 1 thing tho...my high horse is non-existant. U say U were once like me as if I have always been a believer...I have not always believed. So, I was once like U too, and my life is much better from where I am now. I dont care about yer disbelief, so dont let my belief bother U either.
@HardRokMiner Wow, that's a whole lotta words you put in my mouth there.
I said "stop acting so stupid", therefore I'm angry? No. That's not how this works. Pointing out the fact that you say contentful things that you know are false, does not make me angry. It makes me a little annoyed. The discution regarding my emotions is now over.
Well, my life improved strong after discarding religion, so there you go.
You ask me why it bothers me that someone believes in God. This is based on a false
atheists are those that when the more they speak the more the fools they look. atheism should be banned just for being stupid. lol. no need for debates..
I respect Atheist beliefs. Unlike Richard I do not bash people for thinking for themselves. I myself receive a fair amount of bashing because I know what science has figured out and I know what science will not tell you. Humans are not as technologically advanced as you think they are. Humans have devolved. Humans were much more intelligent when they were living in caves. When you look at the television you are looking at the largest weapon of mass destruction on this planet.
@gupsphoo why godzilla? why not a teapot? why not santa claus? why not a spaghetti monster in a space suit? give it a god damn rest, i've heard that stupid kindergarten logic from atheist all over youtube and its freaking stupid and makes u look like a fucking idiot.
The absense of evidence is not the evidence of absence.
@formulaone123 Scientists try to prove each other wrong. A Russian physicist would like to prove an American one wrong on the hydrodynamics of rocketry, for example. A Wright State U Chemist wants to outdo a chemist from University of Dayton.
When you make a discovery, and you write about it so your peers can see just how good of a scientist you are, they have a chance to prove you wrong.
This is why cold fusion, human cloning, piltdown and nebraska man have all been proven wrong: (cont)
@formulaone123 When the South Korean scientist claimed to have cloned a human few (8?) years ago, he wasn't just bullshitting... allegedly. If he hadn't done ANY kind of a report, NO ONE would have taken him seriously, and you wouldn't have heard of him. How was he found out? If you write a scientific paper, it has to be to the letter of what you did and why, for it to have any merit... otherwise, how else can anyone else be able to verify what you did for themselves? cont
@ctressle It's the ultimate selling AND competition point. Your audience IS your competitors (unlike products, such as GM, Colgate, DC Comics, etc...). The ONLY way for you to make a name for yourself in the scientific community, is to publish your discovery. But once you do that, you run the risk of being "tried" by others' attempts to verify/falsify your results. See, science isn't the same as rockets, computers, clean running water, etc.. it's the process that lead to those. cont
@ctressle Science is a process. If you publish a paper, you don't go to MSNBC or Fox news b/c they're for laypeople. You don't publish in Scientific American or Popular Mechanics (though their journalists report on the findings). You don't tell plumbers too. You go to a scientific publishing company. Nature, Journal of High Energy Physics, Journal of the American Chemical Society, etc... (you could literally look this stuff up yourself if you were honest about learning how science is done). cont
@ctressle Do you really believe that cults lead to clean water, plastics, cell phones, cars, electricity etc...? Scientists don't worship so-called "theories". Data is collected, hypotheses are established and tried, theories are tested against reality, false theories are rejected, approximate theories are kept in their domain of explanation, etc... It was other scientists that proved cold fusion was impossible, that piltdown man weren't part of our lineage, and no one cloned any humans cont
@ctressle Scientists report to scientific publishing companies bc... let's face it, do laypeople understand if whether or not a 4 sphere can be mapped to a 2 sphere only one way (mathematics), or understand the homology of feathers (biology)? Do YOU understand those terms? Should such findings be on fox news?
Now, please explain to me and others here, how exactly science is a cult. Or is it?
whats the difference between his belief system i.e nothing with no purpose. or our belief system (christianity) which believes in hope and purpose for the lives that we lead. whats so wrong for wishing that we are reunited with loved ones. unless an athiest can prove there isnt a god. i.e creator of the laws of physics, he should shut the fuck up. he isnt helping anyone, only arseholes
@formulaone123 Only strong atheists believe there are no gods. Weak atheism is in the middle; atheism includes both, and is *simply* a lack of belief in any god(s).
Wishful thinking is just that-wishful thinking, it may or may not be true.
The responsibility is not on any atheist (well, except for a strong atheist but I digress) to prove there are no gods, a lack of belief does not make claims on reality. Any claim is what must be proved.
Unjustified beliefs, even if correct, are always harmful.
To be fair though if science was our one guiding light and religion was eradicated, Science would be worse than religion. THey ridicule people who disagree with them noww....if in the future science was the new god, imagine what would happen to those who questioned theories then?
I personally think Mr dawkins is NO different to a religious fundementalist.
Dawkins is just making a living by being an asshole. He is no better than those he criticizes. You also don't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater, you can still engage in hindu and buddhist practices of great benefit.
When Pilate asked Jesus this question, he did not answer, perhaps because while idea's theory's and especially opinions can be put into words, truth cannot.
@Rusty0555 'In philosophy, the property of statements, thoughts, or propositions that are said, in ordinary discourse, to agree with the facts or to state what is the case.'- i guess brittanica beats jesus in this one ;D(if you're going to be very philosophical, you might stumble on you own words)
@Rusty0555 Excuse me, we do not know that Jesus did not answer because the Gospel says that Pilate posed the question and left the room before Jesus could answer. In other words, Pilate was being rhetorical and actually had not interest in knowing what the truth is. But we know what Jesus' answer must have been, as he put it elsewhere, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Light . . . "
@Rusty0555 Didn't you read the text? It isn't that Jesus didn't answer; it is that Pilate didn't wait for the answer. He left the room to tell Jesus' accusors in the next room that he found him no guilt in the man. The implication is that Pilate was being rhetorical and had no interested in the answer to his own question..
@Cowboy144 how's he a bigot? He's not judging anyone on something superficial, unless you're willing to concede that your beliefs are superficial. He's judging by the content of their character. And I'm sure there aren't ANY religious people out there who dislike atheists JUST because their atheists? That's not even what Dawkins says or thinks. He's talking about the problems with dealing with reality and using good judgement. Religion clouds that. FYI "non religious" = fastest growing group.
@CrimsonDeathBed So because Christian bigots exist it's OK for atheist to be bigots? The fact that you honestly believe that says a lot about the kind of person you are. Cynicism, which is the entire basis of atheism as evidenced by the fact tht Dawkins compares God to the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, etc, is N O T fact.
@Cowboy144 Well, from an evidence point of view they are on equal levels. Zeus, toothfairys, 'god' (Or what name you attribute to him). So that standpoint is not cynical, it just a simple statement of facts and rationality. But these two concepts seems unfamiliar to you.
@fmanh I think you miss the moral teachings of Jesus, which are light years ahead of their time and which are the essence of what Jesus is about. Trash those, and Hitler is as morally valid as Gandhi. The road to barbarism opens before you.
@Cowboy144 it would be an honour to be in the same boat as Richard Dawkins, at least I wouldn't have to listen to the shit that comes out of your mouth!!!!
@elmoelmslie2 Then you'll be honored to know that you ARE in the same boat; you are both self-worshipping antitheistic trolls who contribute nothing whatsoever to society.
@elmoelmslie2 How could some of the scientists permit themselves to make a claim that would necessitate knowledge as extensive as the scheme of the universe, when their knowledge of the total scheme of being is *close* to zero, when confronted with a whole mass of unknowns concerning this very earth and tangible, lifeless matter, let alone the whole universe? ....
Do scientific discoveries and knowledge cause such a scientist to conclude that matter, *** unknowing and unperceiving ***, is his creator and that of all beings?
How can you delude yourself and believe that hydrogen and oxygen, electrons and protons, should first produce themselves, then be the source for all other beings, and finally decree the laws that regulate themselves and the rest of the material world?
Since richard is short for "Dick". its Dick Dawkins. Which sounds like Dick Docking. Which is what his mouth is for, its used as a dick docking station.
What a stupid fucking arrogant prick. Take it from me, im a physicist who's seen the other side of truth! Yes i have.
@gupsphoo you'd rather take it from Stephen Hawking? you're watching the wrong video, this is Dawkins, a dangerous loon who wants all of us to evolve already and grow opposable penises like him, so we can commit homosexual acts like 'frotting' look it up, you'll like it. Hawking doesnt say god doesnt exist, he say god is not needed, according to thermodynamic conservation of energy, it all started somewhere, the match that caused the forest fire that is creation, is god.
If Gordon brown or any other British politician included in his speeches phrases like 'God bless the UK' or 'With gods help we will go on to achieve etc...' he would simply lose any confidence and respect he might have held, why is America so far behind? Religion is nothing more than an intriguing part of our evolution and how we used to understand the world around us. we could go on to discover so much more if we would just leave all the primitive ways of thinking behind us.
Christians don't mock science because science points to intelligent design. If interested in this subject, check out this book: Signature in the Cell. In this book there is never any mention of God, which makes it a good read for secular groups. Its premise flows solely from science.
On the Thor comment: men invented Thor. On the contrary, the existence of God was never optional. The first man was continually exposed to God, there was never an opportunity to invent him. He always has been.
if it's intelligent design it's spouting, there'll be real scientists doing actually work to show how intelligent design is just a covered up version creationism a-shouting.
Man invented the Christian God. On the contrary, the existence of Thor was never optional. The first man was continually exposed to Thor, there was never an opportunity to invent him. He always has been.

I see what you mean, but you are ignoring context. The God of the Old testament literally spoke to Adam and his descendants e.g. Genesis 1:28. He commanded Moses "I am that I am". He made man, then he instructed him (according to the bible).
Men saw lightening and made a determination "that must be Thor" or "that is Thor" without any form of manifestation (e.g. Thor in flesh). On the contrary, God continues to make himself known, case in point: Jesus Christ.
If you would like to partake in an intelligent discussion youll have to do better than spilling this idiotic nonsense! Nobody will take you serious! Perhaps you could try getting your information from another book than the bible and see where that gets you.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
My job is not to convince, but rather to speak to truth. The truth is all that matters. I proclaim Jesus Christ, who is in very nature God, and his atoning sacrifice on behalf of all sinners. To the one who believes in Him, he will receive eternal reward. I know this because it has happened to me. I beg of you, as a man once lost like you, to turn from your sins, repent, and be saved, even if it is on YouTube.
@KingOfPsalm - You can proclaim J.C. with all your might, that is the beauty of faith [stubbornly hanging on to a belief in spite of all evidence against it]. But leave it at that: faith! (is not equal to truth) and please(!) keep it to yourself! Your patronizing, self-righteous tone is exactly what we are talking about! That is exactly why people are getting so fed up with you religious folks. N.B. This is my last reply to you (it is impossible to argue with blatant stupidity).
@boomtao How can there be evidence against the precept of "love they neighbour" and "love God"? What is essential about Christianity is not the mythology but the moral teaching, even though, there are passages rooted in those times, such as his words about witchcraft that must be disregarded. (You're capable of that aren't you?) The moral teachings of Jesus are var ahead of those who came before him and most of those who have come since.
@mc0558 -- You are certainly not claiming that religion is a good source of morality, are you? Since the moral advancements in modern society are all made in spite (and outside) of religion. If we would use the bible as our literal guide for morality then we would be murdering and enslaving left and right (which indeed has been happening throughout history). We don't need religion to know not to kill and steal; it is inherent in human nature!
@boomtao I was talking about the moral teachings of Jesus. Yes there are anomolies but the thrust is towards love, mercy, charity, forgiveness, the sanctity of marriage. The moral relativism of the early 20th century, born of emancipation from religious belief dramatise the weakness of moral systems that lack the absolute authority of divine sanction. The moral relativists Hitler and Stalin hold historical records in concentrated cruelty, murder and mayhem.
@mc0558 -- Yeah, Hitler wrote in his book "Mein Kampf" that he was doing god's work ... goes to show you what religion does to people. I don't know how Stalin fits in your argument. You conveniently do away with the same "anomalities" that are the whole point! We don't need the moral teachings of Jesus. I have never read those and I am the most decent, kind, honest and fair person I know!
@boomtao Hitler said that Christianity is "the same old Jewish swindle" and "I will get rid of it root and branch".Hitler was a pagan, who used Christianity to serve his purposes. But it is worth noting that it was Bishop Gehlen's speech against killing handicapped children that stopped that program. Too bad the Church didn't try using their influence to stop the holocaust. Stalin? The CPSU made atheism a cardinal principle of Party loyalty and felt free to murder all and sundry. & YEAH a sweety
@mc0558 -- Stalin also had a mustach, that doesn't make all people with a mustach evil. The point is that nobody ever did any evil in the name of atheism. On the other hand there is nothing good that anyone has done in the name of religion that has not been done by atheists (the two biggest humanitarian organisations are secular). But there are horrible crimes committed (still everyday) in the name of religion, that no sane, atheïst will ever do!
@boomtao Don't trivialize--who said anything about mustaches? Don't kid yourself--militant atheists in Russia killed many people and destroyed many objects of great beauty. Religious feelings and morality cause a lot of people to be kinder than they really are and do acts of charity they otherwise would not do. Nothing good done in the name of religion? Do you have amnesia? Michelangelo, Boromini, Bernini, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven. Our civilization originates in religion.
@mc0558 -- This conversation is becoming annoying since you stubbornly refuse to get the point or even read the full sentences in its entirety. If you cannot comprehend what I am writing, there is no point in continuing to reply to you. Good luck to you and now go back reading your silly bible (don't forget to conveniently skip the nasty and embarrassing parts!).
@boomtao Looking over your contributions to the board I note that it is a habit of yours to diminish the intelligence of your interlocutor when you lose the argument. That seems a favoured rhetorical ploy with atheists; Dawkins does it too.The certitude that dry-as-toast acheism is the intellectually superior position to hold is laughable and self-serving. Just argue your points, little man, and keep polemics out of it.
@mc0558 -- And here you fail - again - to even recognize the fact that you lost the argument many posts ago. This blinding yourself to reason is very typical for religulous folks. I don't want to hijack this board by continuing this discussion. We are done, but feel free to squeeze in the last word.
That is not even remotely true. It is opinion, and one that indicates your intellectual slavery.
If you're so interested in truth, find evidence of God (you may want to look up what evidence means before you respond to that one) and then I'll start listening.
You're right, Christ, or more accurately belief in Christ, did change everything. It changed our minds. Christ solidified belief and trust in irrationality and almost entirely annihiliated critical thinking and promoted intellectual slavery in the West.
In Hinduism, gods were personified long before your god was, and Allah spoke to Muhammad. With that, Hinduism and Islam are no less remnants of tribal misunderstandings than your Christianity.
Why does he use the thor reference over and over? I love dawkins but it's unfair to use that against religious all the time. It's not like the religious giants mock science (how can they they live science). But ill always side and support dawkins for his groundbreaking work.
Wow i just remembered that in the real world in order to be the most powerful you have to be willing to do anything to keep your power. What's shocking is i finally thought to apply this notion to the United States. I cant believe i haven't before.
I'm an American and where I grew up, it was actually unusual to be religious. I was raised Catholic and my Wednesday school class had about 5 kids there. I was one of only 2 kids in my 2nd grade class who had Catholic first communion. That I knew of. This being NYC, it might be more secular than the rest of America but I believe the US is presented as FAR more religious than it actually is.
As a Canadian now living in the states, I kind of agree with you.
I think part of the problem is the uber religious in this country are also the most vocal. Which gives the impression that they are the majority when in fact, that is not the case. Looking at church attendance in this country is very telling. Less than 40% of the population goes to church regularly.
Most of the people I know who identify themselves as being religious are usually from the previous generation. Especially those that grew up during the Red Scare in the 50s.
Another good indicator is to see that lead balloon Intelligent Design crash like the Hindenberg even in more religious areas like Dover and Kansas. Even bible belt areas have less fundamentalism than most might think.
That's true- there used to be a time in America when the streets of Manhattan were all empty on Sundays. Or so a lady much older than myself once told me. If people think that America is bad now, they should have been here two generations ago. It's allegedly a different universe than it was 50 years ago. I wouldn't know, I'm 21.
That's also true. I was in St. Louis a few years ago, where there's often a church on every other corner and even there it's actually surprisingly secular.
It was a different universe just 30 years ago. I remember in South Georgia reading in the Atlanta Sunday paper that the world was basically going to hell because the blue laws were being repealed. The internet is probably responsible for much of this positive change.
Here is a thought I've long held: Most men go to church because if they don't, their wives will withhold sex until they do. If given the choice I believe most people would not go to church. But, because of social pressure and the fear of stigmatization, people attend. Think of it, millions of people are in church when they don't want to be!
Just the opposite, actually. Theists believe that humans are in God's image. To be atheist is optimistic. It enables us to understand that we are all connected in a real sense of community, and not divided by religion. It is extraordinarily arrogant/narcissistic to believe that there is only one way to god/heaven, and those who do not agree will suffer eternal punishment. I don't make such judgments about other's "souls."
And believing that god thinks you are so special that you get to spend eternity at his side while he punishes those who disagree with you, is not infinitely more narcissistic?
There is a difference between thinking for yourself and believing a fairy tale in which you are the secret princess. Please explain again who the narcissist is?
Goodness the people on here get on their bandwagon and just go off... It's a little ridiculous and tiring. Everyone wants to have a say and put their two cents everywhere. Some pretending to know it all and others just spouting nonsense. Why can' t we just all get along, stop fighting or arguing and just accept one another. Be tolerant of what we don't understand. Realize that in the end we really don't know half as much as we say or think we know. No one truly does.
arrepe7: That's nice, but unrealistic and completely missing the point of atheism. As an atheist I would never tell someone they are going to hell for not believing as I do, but religions do just that. So, fundamentally, religion is intolerant of those who disagree with its dogma. That kind of attitude is harmful on both a personal level and to society. I'd love to get along with everyone, but religion doesn't allow for that.
Missing the point of atheism? I apologize but I don't understand what you are inferring? Unfortunately many religious and non-religious people have done the job of contaminating this world with nonsense and hate. So yes, my statement is unrealistic on a grander level but I believe, since I've witnessed it, that it is possible. If those with an open mind and disposition. That's all. That's what I try to do, be tolerant and understanding. Who am I to judge?
Any "non-religious" people who have "contaminated this world", as you put it, have done so only because they are sociopathic criminals, not in the name of religion. On the other hand, religious fanatics who have contaminated the planet do so in the name of their "God", so by definition, religion is harmful. Zealots are the extreme, but religion is harmful in every way because it makes us believe that the power is something external, not internal.
Whichever the reason, it's ridiculous. The comment I made was in general and of course, as expected, responses, wanting to input their "two cents" abound. I just stated how it's ridiculous how people start spouting this and that on here as if they truly know everything when we should just learn to be tolerant of everyone regardless of background, belief, etc. That is all.
Ok, that's cool. I'm really not attempting to continue an argument here, because I'm sure we agree on some level. However, if you don't want people to respond to a comment that you post in a public forum, then it's best not to post the comment in the first place.
I would have thought the answer to this mans question was relatively easy to understand. Simply, if intelligent people who he seems so ready to place himself amongst are a minority - then any decent politicial would know that your largest audience are of course religious.
My conclusion would be that the only way to change this figure would be to better educate people in schools. There are a lot of short comings in education especially here in the UK.
education does not prove intelligence-guy that works for me has a 8th grade education but can do electrical work and repair automobiles which dawkins in the past admittted he could do neither-that makes dawkins and idiot in these fields--many muslim bombers hold american degrees-qouting atheist published books and atheist science given awards by other atheist science is proof of nothing-scientist dare not reveal they are religious, they are blackballed-
I can do electrical work (especially solar), repair a car (or rebuild one), demo high end sciences in physics/biology/psychology, and you dont understand the scientific method and are preaching information you have no proof of.
Maybe if you educated yourself, you would actually understand evolution, brane theory, and genetics while you are at it. Religious people are not blackballed in the science world. Religious people who propose things without any evidence are. Huge difference.
you cant tell the difference in education and ignorance -intelligence has nothing to do with what level of school you have gone to-atheist like to put down lay people-I was pointing out that though I have a COLLEGE DEGREE,OTHERS WITHOUT DEGREES KNOW HOW TO DO THINGS WE CANNOT-evolution keeps changing in theory in real life we call that lying bullshit-you dumbass need the education-stop reading bullshit published to brainwash you-atheist have no common sense-they have a form of retardation
Try getting into Harvard or MIT with an IQ below 110. I'll concede that just about anyone can earn a general undergraduate degree from a community college but only a select few graduate from Ivy league schools. Same goes for the majority of PhD programs. I'm certain that these students aren't sporting double-digit IQs.
sharia law is in England-mohammad will be on thier bill at the rate they are going-always chuckle at the pc of Gods-the christian God has proven superiority rewarding its followers over the ages by giving it almost all inventions, medicine, defeat over almost the entire earth by christian nations-there is no comparison--can name 100 times more men in history with high IQs that were religious men-not believing in supernatural or God is lack of common sense-
What if an atheist showed you those that besieged Jericho, showed the killers of women and children, and then said "Kids, this is what the Judeo-Christian God really looks like. Take a good hard look. Do not end up like this..."
"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity....
"Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity.... And that's why someday its structure will collapse.
Christianity is the liar....
We'll see to it that the Churches cannot spread abroad teachings in conflict with the interests of the State."
I can post dozens of other Hitler quotes that reflect his atheism, or I could post Stalin, or Mao or Kim Jong Il...
The point is that atheism is a tenant concept of some of the greatest monsters the world ever produced.
Atheism fails, atheists are correctly considered to be evil by the vast majority of people, even Dawkins admits that atheists are refered to as "Mr. Hitler" in the video.
That my friend is what you call, intellectual dishonesty. Come on man your a grown man, your an adult you need to set an example for young people. Not spout nonsense over the internet because you wanna push your agenda. You should be ashamed of yourself!
"atheists are CORRECTLY considered to be evil by the vast majority of people"
Come on! You know better than that. We've had a reasonable discussion, and share many of the same values. Am I automatically evil just because I'm an atheist? What happened to "judge not lest ye be judged"? Does that only apply to theists?
"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity....
"Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity.... And that's why someday its structure will collapse.
Christianity is the liar....
We'll see to it that the Churches cannot spread abroad teachings in conflict with the interests of the State."
"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together....
"The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity's illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity....

(specifically to 'moonlightbateman', but I wanted to ensure that others might read... perhaps Atheism will not seem so frightening!
The reason that I am an Atheist, is because it respects the inner divinity of man above that of a demanding deity; it does not personify abstract concepts far beyond reason. But rather acknowledges and functions with the concept of man as a brotherhood "mankind is naught but one nation" (Qu'ranic quote for you)
Then you are not an atheist . Atheists do not believe, obviously you do. So much so that you ended your statement with a theistic reference that you find meaningful.
Religion is open to criticism in free countries (generally that would mean judeo-christian nations, such as the west).
Atheism apparently is not open to criticism.
Criticize atheism by mentioning the obvious failures such as Hitler, Stalin, Mao, eugenics etc...and you will be called every name in the book by dogmatic militant atheists who cannot defend thier own ideologies and actions.
Atheism fails because it is a hatred based belief system. It hates people of faith.
"All the victims of all the brutal regimes of the XX century are the victims of absolute certainty."
Hitler's faith is under dispute, but in any case, the vast majority of the German army was Christian and it didn't seem to bother them.
You say Stalin and Mao, I say Mussolini and the Ustaci.
Reducing the mindglobbering complexity of the subject of WWII to the evils of atheism is to miss the point and illustrates your lack of understanding of the subject.
If by the "vast majority" you mean the same people who hate gays, lesbians, condoms, pills, Palestinians, atheists, the ACLU and everyone who isn't Born again, well, you are actually referring to the most deplorable part of the USA. Thank god not everyone is like them.
You say Stalin and Mao, I say Mussolini and the Ustaci.
Secular schools can never be tolerated because such a school has no religious instruction and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith.... We need believing people. — Speech made during negotiations leading to the Nazi-Vatican Concordat of 1933, April 26, 1933
Hitler, Stalin and Mao all claimed atheism to be the hope of humanity. It was'nt. Why are atheists such hatemongers? Why are athiests so rude? Why are atheists such racists and sexists? Why are atheists such bigots? Why do atheists have to resort to name calling and hate speech? Answer- atheism No reason not to hate, or hurt others. That is why atheism fails and will continue to fail. Old men, old ideas, old video.. Outdated Epic failure.
You have continually poured bile and vitriol on atheism, are you suggesting that you should go unchallenged? That you should be exempt from scrutiny? That your 'truth' and yours alone is the only valid one? Who made you arbiter of all that is right and good?
The reason that I am an Atheist, is because it respects the inner divinity of man, it does not personify abstract concepts far beyond reason, but acknowledges man as a brotherhood "mankind is naught but one nation" (Qu'ranic quote for you)
stalin, hitler, mao, kim jong il learned everything they know from religious dogma and the importance of creating a personal cult, of someone "who cannot ever be wrong" and who must "always be praised" for anything good that happens while never being blamed for anything bad that happens.
atheism springs from rational thinking and enquiry, all of which is not only discouraged but severely punished a la Spanish Inquisition by these totalitarian states.
Why are atheists such hatemongers? Why are you so rude? Why are you such a racist and sexist? Why are you a bigot? Why do you have to resort to name calling and hate speech? Answer- atheism No reason not to hate, be rude, hurt others. That is why atheism fails and will continue to fail. Old man, old ideas, old video.. Outdated Epic fail (lol)
IT's time religions be open for rational criticism.
to say that you cannot criticize religion IS to admit that religion is no better than hitler, chairman mao, stalin, kim jong il, and all those who accept no dissent.
I support Obama, I went to his rally as well (see my youtube video on that).

Pomme843 1 year ago
assumption, namely, that belief in God bothers me.
I do not know why you interpret my

the belief that cucumbers are the ultimate food.
Pomme843 1 year ago
@Pomme843 - See, now you're being insulting with your "blah blah blah" and your "get over yourselves" Why does is bother you so much that someone believes in God? I dont care that you dont believe and I certainly wouldn't insult you for you lack of belief, but you take the other road. Bad form my good man...BAD FORM.
HardRokMiner 1 year ago
@Pomme843 So my contention is there's something called spirituality which may not have anything to do with man made religion. BTW I am not a Christian either. To me spirituality is about orientation in life as a personal experience- (see secular spirituality) -open to new ideas "Where religion ends, spirituality begins" (See WIKI) I might say If you don't attempt self actualization there is not much point in getting oxygen.
nandanugent 1 year ago
There is an old joke "there are no atheists on a sinking ship" Dawkins speaks of surveys, how intelligent scientists are in terms of IQ, and that he wants further research done to prove his hypothesis. Perhaps if he did a survey on how emotionally satisfied atheist scientists are then he might find they are the most angry members of society. Maslows pyramid explains the hierarchy of human needs with self actualization at the top, mans spiritual needs being paramount.
nandanugent 1 year ago
@nandanugent You have obviously misunderstood Maslows pyramid. The reason that self-actualization is on top, is because it is the most superficial, and thus, the last priority. It is the bottom bricks of the pyramid that holds it up. The bottom bricks are also the largest, symbolizing importance. If you don't get oxygen for 10 minutes, there's not much point in actualization of the self.
On another point, the belief that religion is the best means for self actualization, is much like holding
Pomme843 1 year ago

HardRokMiner 1 year ago
@HardRokMiner There is not a single human being whose only belief is disbelief. Please stop acting so stupid. I've met my share of angry Christians. I mean, make a YT search for "angry atheist", and then for "angry Christian". Religion fosters many very angry individuals, so you can get down from your non-existant, high horse. And no, I'm not angry. Being angry with Christians for Christianity is like being angry with cancer pasients because of cancer. You can't help it. I was once like you.

@Pomme843 U can say U'r "not angry" if U wish, but when U use terms like "stop acting so stupid" & "get down off my non-existant, high horse" I have to disagree with U. yer writing looks angry 2 me. science is a cult
formulaone123 1 year ago
@formulaone123 Scientists try to prove each other wrong. A Russian physicist would like to prove an American one wrong on the hydrodynamics of rocketry, for example. A Wright State U Chemist wants to outdo a chemist from University of Dayton.
When you make a discovery, and you write about it so your peers can see just how good of a scientist you are, they have a chance to prove you wrong.
This is why cold fusion, human cloning, piltdown and nebraska man have all been proven wrong: (cont)
ctressle 1 year ago
@formulaone123 When the South Korean scientist claimed to have cloned a human few (8?) years ago, he wasn't just bullshitting... allegedly. If he hadn't done ANY kind of a report, NO ONE would have taken him seriously, and you wouldn't have heard of him. How was he found out? If you write a scientific paper, it has to be to the letter of what you did and why, for it to have any merit... otherwise, how else can anyone else be able to verify what you did for themselves? cont
ctressle 1 year ago
@ctressle It's the ultimate selling AND competition point. Your audience IS your competitors (unlike products, such as GM, Colgate, DC Comics, etc...). The ONLY way for you to make a name for yourself in the scientific community, is to publish your discovery. But once you do that, you run the risk of being "tried" by others' attempts to verify/falsify your results. See, science isn't the same as rockets, computers, clean running water, etc.. it's the process that lead to those. cont
ctressle 1 year ago
@ctressle Science is a process. If you publish a paper, you don't go to MSNBC or Fox news b/c they're for laypeople. You don't publish in Scientific American or Popular Mechanics (though their journalists report on the findings). You don't tell plumbers too. You go to a scientific publishing company. Nature, Journal of High Energy Physics, Journal of the American Chemical Society, etc... (you could literally look this stuff up yourself if you were honest about learning how science is done). cont
ctressle 1 year ago
@ctressle Do you really believe that cults lead to clean water, plastics, cell phones, cars, electricity etc...? Scientists don't worship so-called "theories". Data is collected, hypotheses are established and tried, theories are tested against reality, false theories are rejected, approximate theories are kept in their domain of explanation, etc... It was other scientists that proved cold fusion was impossible, that piltdown man weren't part of our lineage, and no one cloned any humans cont
ctressle 1 year ago
@ctressle Scientists report to scientific publishing companies bc... let's face it, do laypeople understand if whether or not a 4 sphere can be mapped to a 2 sphere only one way (mathematics), or understand the homology of feathers (biology)? Do YOU understand those terms? Should such findings be on fox news?
Now, please explain to me and others here, how exactly science is a cult. Or is it?
ctressle 1 year ago
whats the difference between his belief system i.e nothing with no purpose. or our belief system (christianity) which believes in hope and purpose for the lives that we lead. whats so wrong for wishing that we are reunited with loved ones. unless an athiest can prove there isnt a god. i.e creator of the laws of physics, he should shut the fuck up. he isnt helping anyone, only arseholes
formulaone123 1 year ago
@formulaone123 Only strong atheists believe there are no gods. Weak atheism is in the middle; atheism includes both, and is *simply* a lack of belief in any god(s).
Wishful thinking is just that-wishful thinking, it may or may not be true.
The responsibility is not on any atheist (well, except for a strong atheist but I digress) to prove there are no gods, a lack of belief does not make claims on reality. Any claim is what must be proved.
Unjustified beliefs, even if correct, are always harmful.
ctressle 1 year ago
To be fair though if science was our one guiding light and religion was eradicated, Science would be worse than religion. THey ridicule people who disagree with them noww....if in the future science was the new god, imagine what would happen to those who questioned theories then?

@Rusty0555 Excuse me, we do not know that Jesus did not answer because the Gospel says that Pilate posed the question and left the room before Jesus could answer. mc0558 1 year ago
@Rusty0555 Didn't you read the text? It isn't that Jesus didn't answer; it is that Pilate didn't wait for the answer.

N.B. This is my last reply to you (it is impossible to argue with blatant stupidity).
boomtao 2 years ago 32
@boomtao How can there be evidence against the precept of "love they neighbour" and "love God"? What is essential about Christianity is not the mythology but the moral teaching, even though, there are passages rooted in those times, such as his words about witchcraft that must be disregarded. (You're capable of that aren't you?) The moral teachings of Jesus are var ahead of those who came before him and most of those who have come since.
mc0558 1 year ago
@mc0558 -- You are certainly not claiming that religion is a good source of morality, are you? Since the moral advancements in modern society are all made in spite (and outside) of religion. If we would use the bible as our literal guide for morality then we would be murdering and enslaving left and right (which indeed has been happening throughout history). We don't need religion to know not to kill and steal; it is inherent in human nature!
boomtao 1 year ago
@boomtao I was talking about the moral teachings of Jesus. Yes there are anomolies but the thrust is towards love, mercy, charity, forgiveness, the sanctity of marriage. The moral relativism of the early 20th century, born of emancipation from religious belief dramatise the weakness of moral systems that lack the absolute authority of divine sanction. The moral relativists Hitler and Stalin hold historical records in concentrated cruelty, murder and mayhem.
mc0558 1 year ago
@mc0558 -- Yeah, Hitler wrote in his book "Mein Kampf" that he was doing god's work ... goes to show you what religion does to people. I don't know how Stalin fits in your argument. & YEAH a sweety
mc0558 1 year ago

Why does he use the thor reference over and over? I love dawkins but it's unfair to use that against religious all the time. It's not like the religious giants mock science (how can they they live science). But ill always side and support dawkins for his groundbreaking work.

MissNobody 2 years ago
As a Canadian now living in the states, I kind of agree with you.
I think part of the problem is the uber religious in this country are also the most vocal. Which gives the impression that they are the majority when in fact, that is not the case. Looking at church attendance in this country is very telling. Less than 40% of the population goes to church regularly.
Diomedes01 2 years ago
That's the impression I always got, too. It's a mostly secular and mostly liberal country with a very loud, very active and very angry minority.
I personally don't know anyone who regularly attends church. If someone is religious where I live, they are likely an immigrant.
MissNobody 2 years ago
Yes. Or usually older.
Diomedes01 2 years ago
That's true- there used to be a time in America when the streets of Manhattan were all empty on Sundays. Or so a lady much older than myself once told me. If people think that America is bad now, they should have been here two generations ago. It's allegedly a different universe than it was 50 years ago. I wouldn't know, I'm 21.
That's also true. I was in St. Louis a few years ago, where there's often a church on every other corner and even there it's actually surprisingly secular.
MissNobody 2 years ago

I don't make such judgments about other's "souls."
wcduke 2 years ago 4
How's that, zillahnoir? atheist = narcissist ?

I'd love to get along with everyone, but religion doesn't allow for that.
wcduke 2 years ago
"They say there's enough religion in the world to make us hate one another, but not enough to make us love."
wcduke 2 years ago
Missing the point of atheism? I apologize but I don't understand what you are inferring? Unfortunately many religious and non-religious people have done the job of contaminating this world with nonsense and hate. So yes, my statement is unrealistic on a grander level but I believe, since I've witnessed it, that it is possible. If those with an open mind and disposition. That's all. That's what I try to do, be tolerant and understanding. Who am I to judge?
arrepe7 2 years ago
Any "non-religious" people who have "contaminated this world", as you put it, have done so only because they are sociopathic criminals, not in the name of religion. On the other hand, religious fanatics who have contaminated the planet do so in the name of their "God", so by definition, religion is harmful. Zealots are the extreme, but religion is harmful in every way because it makes us believe that the power is something external, not internal.
BIoodRedBIood 2 years ago
Whichever the reason, it's ridiculous. The comment I made was in general and of course, as expected, responses, wanting to input their "two cents" abound. I just stated how it's ridiculous how people start spouting this and that on here as if they truly know everything when we should just learn to be tolerant of everyone regardless of background, belief, etc. That is all.
arrepe7 2 years ago
Ok, that's cool. I'm really not attempting to continue an argument here, because I'm sure we agree on some level. However, if you don't want people to respond to a comment that you post in a public forum, then it's best not to post the comment in the first place.

I would have thought the answer to this mans question was relatively easy to understand. Simply, if intelligent people who he seems so ready to place himself amongst are a minority - then any decent politicial would know that your largest audience are of course religious.
My conclusion would be that the only way to change this figure would be to better educate people in schools. There are a lot of short comings in education especially here in the UK.
paullnewlands 2 years ago
education does not prove intelligence-guy that works for me has a 8th grade education but can do electrical work and repair automobiles which dawkins in the past admittted he could do neither-that makes dawkins and idiot in these fields--many muslim bombers hold american degrees-qouting atheist published books and atheist science given awards by other atheist science is proof of nothing-scientist dare not reveal they are religious, they are blackballed-
playsetman 2 years ago
I can do electrical work (especially solar), repair a car (or rebuild one), demo high end sciences in physics/biology/psychology, and you dont understand the scientific method and are preaching information you have no proof of.
Maybe if you educated yourself, you would actually understand evolution, brane theory, and genetics while you are at it. Religious people are not blackballed in the science world. Religious people who propose things without any evidence are. Huge difference.
nidodson 2 years ago
you cant tell the difference in education and ignorance -intelligence has nothing to do with what level of school you have gone to-atheist like to put down lay people-I was pointing out that though I have a COLLEGE DEGREE,OTHERS WITHOUT DEGREES KNOW HOW TO DO THINGS WE CANNOT-evolution keeps changing in theory in real life we call that lying bullshit-you dumbass need the education-stop reading bullshit published to brainwash you-atheist have no common sense-they have a form of retardation

But rather acknowledges and functions with the concept of man as a brotherhood "mankind is naught but one nation" (Qu'ranic quote for you)
evilmongoose1988 3 years ago
Then you are not an atheist . Atheists do not believe, obviously you do. So much so that you ended your statement with a theistic reference that you find meaningful.
Yep, You are a believer.
moonlightbateman 3 years ago
Religion is open to criticism in free countries (generally that would mean judeo-christian nations, such as the west).
Atheism apparently is not open to criticism.
Criticize atheism by mentioning the obvious failures such as Hitler, Stalin, Mao, eugenics etc...and you will be called every name in the book by dogmatic militant atheists who cannot defend thier own ideologies and actions.
Atheism fails because it is a hatred based belief system. It hates people of faith.
moonlightbateman 3 years ago
Here's the gist:
"All the victims of all the brutal regimes of the XX century are the victims of absolute certainty."
Hitler's faith is under dispute, but in any case, the vast majority of the German army was Christian and it didn't seem to bother them.
You say Stalin and Mao, I say Mussolini and the Ustaci.
Reducing the mindglobbering complexity of the subject of WWII to the evils of atheism is to miss the point and illustrates your lack of understanding of the subject.
RationalFuture 3 years ago 3
Please try to grasp...
Your "opinion" is a minority one, meaning that the vast majority of people have looked at the evidence and determined that you are wrong,

stalin, hitler, mao, kim jong il learned everything they know from religious dogma and the importance of creating a personal cult, of someone "who cannot ever be wrong" and who must "always be praised" for anything good that happens while never being blamed for anything bad that happens.
atheism springs from rational thinking and enquiry, all of which is not only discouraged but severely punished a la Spanish Inquisition by these totalitarian states.
