Up to this day I'm still shocked from the fact that they didn't win the 1981 contest! (the only 'weak' link I can think of here is Marc's vocals but that's about it................)
Interesting....I always forget to hear songs of the italian Switzerland, when I watch at the ESC. This song is pretty even if the pronounciation is very very german!!!
Sorry.
I still find myself crying when I listen to this song this kind of song this beautiful melodies are the reason why I believed so naively for years that Eurovision was a real musical show where songs really had something that moved us and left its impact due to the excellence and brillance not because of stage cirucs distractive shits on stage and no talent at all together with non-shameful political votings like today. It angers me so much how it ruined the essence of it ... I miss the music.
@Fabian81 unfortunately I must say I totally agree with you. These years we have mostly very good circus performances and a few good songs together with good performances that barely no-one notices. What a pity!!
Here another lovesong by Peter Reber: "Die grössten Schweizer Hits - Peter Reber" (copy and paste) here on YT. It's I suppose the greatest love song ever from Switzerland. Peter has dedicated this song for his lovely wife. On stage you will see Simon, his son (playing piano), Peter (with his guitar) and his daughter at the cembalo. Enjoy with tears in your eyes.
Interestingly, the UK only got two "12 points" for their entry, while this got five. (Germany and France each got four "12 points".) The UK won because they scored consistently from every jury (statistically, the UK's scores showed the lowest standard deviation), while this song was much more polarising: some countries loved it, but others gave it nothing at all. The lesson it that you win Eurovision by submitting a song that has broad appeal.
In those years maybe ... today u submitt the song that makes the whole continent jump and be excited to hear and dance and be crazy as if they were at a MTV award show or a gay club... with all the show u can put on .. like having a druken guy or a naked girl ... everything from the cheap to the cheapest counts because televote allows people to say "i love it though the song sucks" LOL That's ESC today
Nothing I'm gay for heaven sake. But it's like .. Eurovision is one thing gay clubs are another and MTV Awards show is another ... 3 types of environmenr that all of the sudden seem to mash-up in the same making ESC sound dreadful tacky and cliche and musically annoying and bad qualitywise. If I wanna dance I go to a gay club not to a ESC show ... if I want fun people excited and yelling for their artists with over the top performances I go to MTV awards ... I want nice decent music from (cont)
Europe where people SING in their own language with proud and not with elementary childish english lyrics. Where we can actually hear real songs done by professional people who know how to do great songs. Not monsters from Finland or canned-travestis and vinkingdressed-jumping girls from Ukraine who have no lyrics to sing and nothing to say that is relevant. I want Eurovision the way it should be ...
You may want "Eurovision the way it should be", but who made you arbiter of culture? You're entitled to an opinion, but your opinion is no more important than anyone else's. Eurovision is the way it is because people like simple songs - that's what they vote for - and people sing in English because that's what everyone understands. Your view of how things "should be" is just a preference, nothing more: your opinion doesn't matter more than anyone else's, and you don't decide our culture for us.
I'm sorry but u are being very unfriendly .. I stated my opinion like u did to ur opinion --- We don't like this UK song we dont like Eurovision the same way ... period. But u dont have to be so agressive in ur speech against me. Yes i disaprove the quality of the show today I dont believe it represents anything postive culturally from a musical point of view ... and if they wany to sing in English they need to work a lor harder ...because honestly they sound better in their own language.
I also believe that we should be able to embrasse each country in their own language because musicallywise it sounds more honest and true. If we dont understand the lyrics it's okey we should learn to "understand" the music somehow because i dont speak swedish and yet i know how to appeciate a song sung in swedish and so can everyone if we arent narrowminded. Yes I find many top 5 performances trash because of the show they put on and the bad songs they are. But hey if Europeans like trash ...
I just remember growing from a young kid watching eurovision during the 80s and 90s and saying today that even the bad songs from those decade sounded better than the top 5 from today, It changed dramatically into a "i want to impress with the biggest show possible" and "who cares about the song" That simpliciry and humbleness got lost for just votes ... the music is no longer there they just wanna entertain and any piece of trash is fine ...
I am not saying what Eurovision should or should not be ... that's not my problem. I cant also agree that as an european myself I find this show today culturally enriching from a musical point of view, And i'm sorry if u love it so much and u like the way it is because it went down the drain for me. I wanted real music but I cant find it there anymore. Not even real singer with talent. It's all become a a joke ... but that's my opinion. Don't missjugde as im not critizing u.
That panpine intro just gives goosebumps till this very day ... no other song had such an echanting touch as this one before 1981 ... beautiful. They were really good ... always original and polished in their act even when in 76 ou 79 they sounded like "a joke" they did that even gracously ... and this song proves really how damn good they knew to be.
This is one of those songs, that everybody seems to love, except for me. It's rather good, I guess, but I don't understand how it could get the 4th place and be so beloved to this day.
I would explain it to you but I guess I can only tell you that simply is not the kind of song u don't like as simple as that. Even if so many people like me love it .. it's not strange or out of the ordinary that some people will dislike it, It's call being different and having different musical tastes.
Un carissimo saluto alla signora Nella Martinetti, un carissimo abbraccio e un augurio per una presto guarigione. Nella, questa canzone mi accompagana da quando ero piccola. Grazie per tutto. Odinea
Perhaps my all-time favorite Eurovision song... I wanted Bucks Fizz to win that year, and I'm still glad they did, because they went on to give us five or six years of great pop afterwards, in a way that these guys never could have. Nevertheless, as a stand-alone song I think this is more beautiful than "Making Your Mind Up". Pity they couldn't both win. I'm torn!
I'm not ... I would have preferred this to win than the UK and I wouldn't care if I were a UK citizen ... if my country's song was bad I wouldn't have any problems to say it and stand for any other entry I found it best.
You misunderstand: I loved "Making Your Mind Up", and I could see that Bucks Fizz were going to be stars in a way that Peter, Sue and Marc could never be. These guys had one beautiful song in them, and this was it. I didn't support the UK just because that's where I was, I supported Bucks Fizz because they had a great song, and I could see that they would deliver more great songs in the future.
But if you don't like this song, why would you have preferred it to win? Are you saying that you don't like this song, but you liked "Making Your Mind Up" even less? If so, which song in the contest would you have liked to win?
I don't like this song ... THE UK ONE ... I hate Bukk Fizz ... they have always been one of the cheapesta and tacky acts ever from the UK I'm sorry I hate them completely. And this song just makes me vomit ... It shames me it lost againt Swizterland. And remember this is a SONG contest ... whether they would make a careear out if it or nor is irrelevant for the contest ... it was just not the best song. Swizterland was ...
Well, of course you're entitled to your opinion. If you want to hate Bucks Fizz you can. As I mentioned in another posting, this song was much more polarising: some loved it, some didn't. But obviously Bucks Fizz' entry was more popular overall than this one: it got more points, and that's why it won.
No mainly because in those years songs from the UK or France tended to somehow be very rated by almost all the juris. If there were political status behind this voting it's easy to speculate ... but I can't see how the jurys would consider this one the best. At least songs like France or Germany and again Swizterland proved to be high competition UK won by luck at the end. Undeserverly.

Qualitywise UK was not the clear evident winner not like what happened in 1997.
Of course when televoting was first introduced there were some obvious tendencies for expat communities to vote for their "home" countries (e.g. Turks in Germany), but with time this is changing, as migrants start to identify more with the land they live in. This is just natural human behaviour, but that's not the same thing as some kind of "political" pressure.
I've lived in countries like Germany I've know immigrant communities and I so sorry to let u down and disagree with u. NO they never do let go of their traditional views and culture. NEVER. It's in their blood and soul. So disapora and eastern political and cultural voting will always remain and I blame EBU for allowing to happen because it was predictable. But since the show is no more about music in my opinion no one cares anymore saddly :(
