He did it on the Palms course in Las Vegas hole #5 or 14. Some say there was no wind, Mike said he remembered about a 25 mph gust that hit at about the time he swung. The ball carried 465 to the front of the green, hit grass and bounced over the green. 515 yards total. Witnessed by the group of golfers who were on the green at the time and were asked to stand back so that Mike could make the try without holding up play during the PGA Senior Tournament in which this drive was made. Scientists worked out that with tail wind and swing speed of 155mph then 515 is possible. Mike's swing speed has been measured officially at 155 so there's also a chance it could be slightly faster on a good day. That drive was certainly a good day.

As far as Austin's secret, they hinted at it in this video... and that is the left-side power-shift at setup to the ball. First, make sure you are in shape, seriously. Transfer yur weight on your left side, about 80%. Make sure your left arm is literally LOCKED straight and stiff, and the club is also in-line with your left arm.... learn how to swing that way, like Austin did.

Mike Austin's swing is not substantially different from other pros. He is not some physical anomoly. His equipment was regulation. So it is POSSIBLE there MIGHT have been contributing environmental conditions on the day he set his record.
It is well known that there was 30-35 mph wind helping his shot. And yes Austin was a big hitter on tour...way longer than average. My equipment is regulation too and I rarely get out driven.
Austins swing is different from many pros,it is actually suited for the driver,which may explain why he didn't win as much as other great swingers.He has a single axis like Mo norman,between the shaft and forearm.he also has a very high takeaway ,very much over his head,which creates alot of arc and speed.He also contacts the driver with a throw or wrists unhinging which adds a last burst for long drivers works well ,but not with the irons.He was also from what I take a very strong person.

The only way someone can hit a golf ball 500 yards is if they:
-Hit the best drive of your life;
-On a severely downhill hole with a 40+ mph tailwind.
-The drive must land on the cart path and bounce down that cart path many times.
Even a 400 yard drive is unheard of really. But 500 yards? I am 26 and have played baseball and golf since I was a little kid. I'm 6'1 tall and 210 pounds and hit the ball far. 280-300 yards average on my drive. My longest drive is 375 yards. My Handicap is 9.
Hmm, well I've been watching Tiger since 1996 on tv and never once have I seen him hit it 400 yards. I'm sure there's a good chance that he's hit a handfull of drives over 400 in his life. But he averages about 300 yards on his drives. Sure, somtimes he'll pop one out there 350 +/-, but I cannot remember ever hearing about him hitting a 400 yard drive in a professional PGA golf tournament. Him or anyone else for that matter. at high elevations the air is a lot thinner and you can hit the ball much further. I am a 21 handicap so im not to great but i hit a 400 yard drive at 12,000 feet

shifting your weight helps but how to hit long drive is all in the lag. i have an eigth gader on my team who it it 320 on a flat fairway no wind and he might weigh 145. i played with someone who weighed 165 and hit it a avg of 330 he was skinny and about 6,6 he just unleashed on it. i play and i way 195 and im am short i hit it about 280 avg but when i hold the realese i have a avg of 320. i do throw my weight in it because it does help but it is not the key thing to do.

I can hit just over 300 yards and I am 13. I'll only usually break it on maybe 3 out of 18 holes in a game, avg is around 240-260 on the rest though. Outdriving your parents is fun lol.

The only way someone can hit a golf ball 500 yards is if they:
-Hit the best drive of your life;
-On a severely downhill hole with a 40+ mph tailwind.
-The drive must land on the cart path and bounce down that cart path many times.
Even a 400 yard drive is unheard of really. But 500 yards? I am 26 and have played baseball and golf since I was a little kid. I'm 6'1 tall and 210 pounds and hit the ball far. 280-300 yards average on my drive. My longest drive is 375 yards. My Handicap is 9.

Hmm, well I've been watching Tiger since 1996 on tv and never once have I seen him hit it 400 yards. I'm sure there's a good chance that he's hit a handfull of drives over 400 in his life. But he averages about 300 yards on his drives. Sure, somtimes he'll pop one out there 350 +/-, but I cannot remember ever hearing about him hitting a 400 yard drive in a professional PGA golf tournament. Him or anyone else for that matter. The guys in the long drive comps use illegal clubs and balls... ;)

at high elevations the air is a lot thinner and you can hit the ball much further. I am a 21 handicap so im not to great but i hit a 400 yard drive at 12,000 feet

shifting your weight helps but how to hit long drive is all in the lag. i have an eigth gader on my team who it it 320 on a flat fairway no wind and he might weigh 145. i played with someone who weighed 165 and hit it a avg of 330 he was skinny and about 6,6 he just unleashed on it. i play and i way 195 and im am short i hit it about 280 avg but when i hold the realese i have a avg of 320. i do throw my weight in it because it does help but it is not the key thing to do.

I can hit just over 300 yards and I am 13. I'll only usually break it on maybe 3 out of 18 holes in a game, avg is around 240-260 on the rest though. Outdriving your parents is fun lol.
