I'd like to report that this works just fine in 1.1 and I've gotten a lot more flint now that I can rip through a stack of gravel like this! Many thanks for pointing this out and I would recommend submitting this to the wiki. I really like how much this has helped me!

I don't know if replication glitch still works in 1.8. If it does, then using that glitch along with additional piston to move gravel up could automatize this process. Though pistons can push only 15 blocks, it's still automatic. :D

Or what you can do is make a big tower jump into water then go to your tower break the bottom block and quickly place a torch if the tower just floats break torch and wait a tiny bit linger then place a torch and the gravel will fall and break auto matticly and it also works with sand. I figured this out with sand :)

Helpful tip - You might want to make a small 1x2 wall blocking the pool from the tower so the flint/gravel doesn't get tossed down there while you're shoveling it. Alternatively, you could just make the tower an extra block away from the pool. Just my two cents.

@TheTr3v Omg! You can make arrows out of em :D Feather + stick + flint = Arrow. And you can make Flint and Steel with em to burn stuff
