This song is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I don't understand it completely because it's a personal story, but it's so sad, I feel it deeply. I've listened to this song every day this week, it's my current favourite. Well done John! Beautifully written and performed. Wow.
If you listen to the lyrics (as John says, "correctly") you will understand that what makes this song so sad is that the first person in this song has infact, died. I realize music is open to interpritation, as it should be, but the second verse "waited in vain, a figure in black, alone in the rain" and "still wears my ring" sounds obviously tragic.
@Lunapalis Like all good musicians and singers. I guess that you have to actually experience the ego-less perfection of performing withing the intention of the composer to understand how wonderful music is. I think one of the best musical quotes was from John Coletrane "After all the investigation, all of the technique-doesn't matter! Only if the feeling is right."
@Lunapalis Great comment Luna. You're correct. All good singing puts the singer in second place to the song. This is just well sung and not interpreted. Fascinating that choral music actually encourages the singer to leave the ego out of the performance. Soloists feel the need to put part of themselves into the song when in fact the only thing important IS the song.
I don't get how people say he sounds North American. For one, there is such a huge number of accents from various places in North America, that you can't sound "North American." Second, to me he sounds completely Irish. :-/
A very beautiful, sad love song... Gives out a very "Simon and Garfunkel" feel... Out of curiosity, during the video, there is a ghost shot of a beautiful young lady listening... Who is she? Just curious...
Concerning accents, several Anuna singers sound less "Irish" when singing than speaking English. I think this is expected as singing (especially in Anuna) is not the same as speaking. John has enough Irish accent in his singing to make it that much more beautiful.
This is one of the most beautiful and poignant songs I've ever heard. The performance is perfect and the strings are lovely. After experiencing all that, my next thought was that John sounds a bit like Art Garfunkle ... always one of my favorite vocalists. Looking forward to a Sweet June album.
i reckon this is one of my favourite songs, and i'm not one of these crazy anuna fanatics whose comments i've read. i mean i appreciate the beauty of what they do but i just think this is amazing.
@CoolieMcDacent Maybe not completely but I do think they sound pretty similar. I mean, they really look alike too but you can still tell them apart =)
I shouldn't be shocked, and yet each time I hear this video, I cry again. It's beautiful in both it's simplicity and complexity. Thank you for posting this and giving us the chance to enjoy such a powerful piece.
Is there a way I can purchase some sheet music for this song? I'm going to attempt to do this solo at my school but I can't unless I get the sheet music, and I've looked everywhere for it.
No sheet music I'm afraid. Around 1.33 you can see the bones of it. It's very simple to play. Just open the strings for the first chord and the rest is a simple progression
I love how his range most, I think. Obviously as a whole he is an incredibly gifted musician, but just the way he makes use of his upper range is amazing.
I don't think my comment was that odd. Maybe I just hear John's accent differently than you because I'm Canadian not Irish. To my ears that distinct Irish pronounciation is much more apparent when he speaks. I guess others do not hear it that way.
Yes - that does make sense. Most commentees are American, and what is odd about John's accent is that he pronounces all the consonants. Irish msuicians when they sing rock tend to drop them, but John makes a point of enunciating every word very clearly. A Canadian would hear that as slightly American. Your own accents are very distinct to Irish ears, so well spotted.
I notice the lovely Irish accent in the interview. However, the song is sung without any hint of an accent.... sounds perfectly North American. Just curious if dropping the accent is done intentionally or does it happen naturally when singing the words? Thanks for posting....it is sung so beautifully.
@indigodawn2 It's actually a very basic and common linguistics thing, really. You'll hear a lot of european and british and other english-speakers who are not North American, but sound as such when they sing. Not odd at all.
Sorry everyone. There is an error in this video. His brother Michael McGlynn was the writer of this song. John is a better singer, but the composing ability of Anuna is mostly Michael.
Well, if you listen carefully, he never claims to have written the song. He just mentions that it's a beautiful song. And it truly wouldn't be the same had Michael not had such an amazing voice to sing it into reality, anyway.
John wrote the piece. John sang it, Michael arranged the strings (and I believe it took him ten minutes according to a recent remark), but we are all for propagation of mythology.
As I was told, John had nothing to do with the writing of the song. This is second hand information, but Michael has always been the chief composer in Anuna, so I'm inclined to believe it.
In the auld days people bough a CD and the writer's name was written on it. I have a copy of his CD in my hand and it says he wrote it. But you are probably correct anyway.
I have heard him as a soloist in the choir Anuna but i didn´t know that he make his own songs. This one is just Wonderfull and he has an excelent voice too. I like the whole thing very much.
I love this song because, unlike so many other songs, it's about a guy whose girl left but he isn't malicious or angry. It's very refreshing and I love it!!
@BookwormCWfan Actually, the song is about him leaving his girl, and yet she waited for him still wearing his ring while in the rain and in black (symbols for her depression and mourning). The verse talks about how he regrets this and hopes that whomever she turns to is one in a million, i.e. better than he was to her.
I know that every time I here it cry. It's a powerful song, and when I heard it live last year, I still cried. The CD is amazing. He is an amazing songwriter. I am in awe.
Beautifully sad love song remains me of my first love my first everything and the ruins of that relationship. I was the figure in black alone wondering what or who I had left to believe in. Life goes on & the scar always remains.
I couldn't find the music anywhere online so I learned it the old fashioned way: By ear. And by watching the above clip. I couldn't figure out the chorus when he sings "make sure..." so I just used Am, C and G. It sounds pretty good.
Back lighting is great in this version John, but you can't beat the black and white! What a serious face - man, you have me convinced that you love the chick you're singing about...
I'm so glad someone finally posted this version! Nothing wrong with the other version, but I love this one. I love his whole solo album, for that matter! He has such a beautiful voice. And he's a great songwriter....
This is such a beautiful song, is there anywhere I can find sheet music/ tab?

I don't normally like "pretty" love songs or songs to do with love but you can feel the poignancy in this one.
I bet they are still trying to get 1:17 to 1:25 's seat dry..........

Question! Considering Michael and John sound just as similar as they look, how do you guys decide on which McGlynn brother sings what song?
Or is it just about which brother *wants to sing* what?

Thats odd. John never sings in any other accent other than his own, which is flat Irish. What an odd comment.

Actually I can tell his accent. I think that his singing just masks it a little bit because he pronounces the words a bit more.
