Good song, better than Wichita Lineman. I visualize myself listining to this song, driving west on a highway as the sun is setting on a long hot summer day.
My dad used to play ONE tape all the time: Moon River, Can't Stop Loving You, Desiderata, THIS ONE and some other 60s hits. I got to hate the songs........ but then I grew up I found the magic in them. Among all of those songs Moon River and By The Time I Get To Phoenix got stuck in my head until this very day. I miss my dad .....
Oh, this song brings back so many good memory,s for me. I was a little girl when all his older hits where big, and he was my Mothers Fav: singer of all time. He has the most beautiful voice i have ever heard and can also play a mean guitar, i wish Glen well for the rest of his time here on this earth!
I am 63 and my eyes are welling up with tears as I listen to this. Brings back so many memories..... some of my mates who also loved this song have passed on.......the years have slipped away like mist without my noticing. If only I can turn back time....... Thanks 60otaku3-san, for bringing it all back.
@cicada238 i'm 49 and remember this as a child. my years are statring to fly by as well. oh my, i miss my childhood days. if you need help building that time machine, let me know .
My grandmother and I used to listen to her Glen Cambell albums every summer when I stayed at her house. One day she asked me what I planned on doing when I grew up.....Well I told her I was going to marry Glen and work as a spokesmodel on The Price is right ! Neither happened...but I can still listen to Glen's beautiful music and dream about what might have been !
Yes he is a very talented man . They dont make music like this any more . Back when I was a kid you heard Glenn and Roger Miller on the same station that played the Stones . Johnny Cash too . Great radio back then
seriously, when I hear that orchestration in the background it takes me back to that more more romantic era that left us there in that turbulent decade.
I drove the highways many times out west in my life, and this just "sounds" like the road and my thoughts somehow.
Damn. I was driving down i40 after fishing with my boys from the colorado river to riverside, ca. Heard this song on an abstract radio station. Got home, had to look it up. Seems there are many renditions, and even written by webb. Wow. Amazing performance got to give kudos to webb fo the written portion. Thank you very much! Take care,
@billchew450 ...it shows how we each have our day in the sun here, given hints of ecstacy, and then we are prepared to make the long journey to unimaginable beauty.
Does anyone know. was Glen the original person who wrote this tune? ? Also Love the Issac Hays "Long Play" version of this tune , if you haven't heard that version, you Must!
This song is about the Phoenix UFO lights. ET Joaquin Phoenix, the mighty Quinn, said if people continue their animal-cruel activities, circuses, rodeos and eating animals, they "will reap what they sow". He said that in the movie Earthlings.
his performances, along with Jimmy Webb's writing and arranging, are haunting, beautiful melodies. What a great soul-felt song this truly is, that will always mellow people out and really make you think about what relationships are all about...God bless Glen, Always...
How cant you love Glen Campbell? His choice of music and his performances make him a true artist whose music will never go out of style. Thanks for posting.
the orchestration in this song is magnificent, to say the least...it just conveys and stirs the feelings of what the words say...it's such a shame so many of the bums, today, call themselves musicians and produce crap....this is really music....
The year was 1967. I was 20 years old and in the USAF headed to my next assignment, Korat AB, Thailand. Now I'm 64 and I'm trying to figure out where the years have gone. What a great song.
Surely one of the most poignant songs ever performed.

I was 15. I'm a girl :) I used to sit on our porch swing and play and sing this song. I had taught myself numerus Glen Campbell songs. What a wonderful memory. Thanks for posting.
It truly does not get too much better than this. If you think America has no more Americaness just listen with your heart and soul. Most people can love this unless they are deadened inside to beauty and life.
While this song may be simple but adequate (as describe) By The Time I Get To Phoenix written by Jimmy Webb, performed by Glen Campbell is number 20 on BMI Top 100 Songs of the Century. For this list the top 100 Songs of the Century are the most played songs on American radio and television.
Brazil Brazil Brazil... good memories from my childhood .... I dIdn't know what the lyricas was about, until the time I came to live in USA... This song just brakes my heart
Linda balada que também teve um ótimo registro de Johnny Rivers. Há também uma gravação do próprio Glen Campbell, junto com Ann Murray, no qual ele canta "By the time I get to Phoenix" e ela, "I say a little prayer".
This is music. Now come on,you know damn well that listening to Lady Gaga and most hip hop that you feel just a wee bit bankrupt in the soul and ripped off in the heart.
I would listen to this song as a litle boy mostly because my parents listened to counrty music. they were raised in the south and I gess that was what they listened to. Did I mention that they're black. Yes black people listen to country music. and even recorded country songs. (Hello Charlie Pride.) I know this may not stop the race talk, but I sure hope that it helps. Music transends race. Issac Hayes (the Black Moses) did this song as well.
Im 52, but these songs came out when I was only a child, my dad used to play them on his gramophone all the time, brings back really happy memories, love it!
Jimmy Webb, the writer of this classic performed it on an old recording of BBC Sessions screened at Christmas, it was a fantastic rendition of a country/folk standard. The song still commands massive radio airplay 40 + years after it was released. Campbell and Webb continued their successful association, other hits included 'Wichita Lineman'
@boswell69 You don't think modern musicians have talent???
I just don't know how people form their opinions on things they have no understanding of.
I just don't know how people are so ignorant and arrogant to think they can judge a whole world of modern music based on the tiny proportion they may have heard.
Please, think before posting a comment,
it just makes you look like a total idiot when you say things like that
@corpsemunger What you said is probably true. However...the problem is that nearly all of today's acts that have talent are not getting radio airplay. Top 40 is fixated on watered down pop or generic hip-hop/rap. Where are today's artists who can play an instrument or write their own songs? Lady Gaga can but even her music sounds generic. The fact is that it is really hard to find great talent on the radio these days.
@NYBredBamaFed Well i think thats more down to the majority of people listening to radio1 - so what they want to hear might not be what we might call "better music" --
There is some "talented" stuff in there, the thing is, it is all soppy and miserable.. "adele" and "birdy" come to mind.
the other problem with top 40 is they are so disposable, this music doesnt have much lasting effect on their audience.
but there are other radio stations other than Radio1 -
@corpsemunger A true classic. In the 60’s to mid 70’s, you could tune in 1 radio station, and hear a much wider variety of music. Singers that had harmony in their lyrics & could play an instrument. Few, but certainly not ALL of today’s artists can match the magic that was created then. Truly talented Musicians today are far & few between. It’s a matter of opinion.
As for your rude remarks, ignorant and arrogant, you sound like the authority on those subjects.
1. You obviously have not tuned into radio 1 - or are too biased to think with an open mind
2. "harmony in their lyrics & could play an instrument" - Instead of making up bullshit, then preaching it like you actually know what you are talking about please please please listen to some modern music, If you want I could spout off a whole bunch of artists who are great musicians - and can play their instrument to a level far better then GC.
@corpsemunger It’s apparent you can’t comprehend the written word. Read it again, few but not all. What’s your rational? If you didn’t live during this era, you have nothing to compare it to. Note I said live, not listen. There are good musicians today, just fewer of them.
We could argue this to infinity. Different age groups have different opinions. No need to get all whiny & defensive about it.
@Garwood900 No, there are just bigoted, biased old gits and older people that actually use their brain.
Your argument here is exposed particularly when you said " If you didn’t live during this era, you have nothing to compare it to"
That just shows your misunderstanding of music in general,
Ahhh if i have the time later today i will upload a video telling you why that is wrong, there are so many flaws that i just cant be bothered to write them on a comment box,
@corpsemunger I agree on several points you make. But you still don’t understand, it’s an opinion. You assume a lot about people without knowing them. Getting upset and making rude remarks isn’t constructive dialog, nor will it persuade most people to agree w/ you. As you get older, you may or may not understand this.
I won't loose sleep over this, & neither should you. Agree to disagree and move on. Liked the vid, BTW.
Have a good day! Yer old fossil friend, Gar. :-D
By The Time I Get To Phoenix - Campbell, Glen [Delight, Arkansas] - No.26 on 11/25/1967. 7 weeks Top 40. - "AMG Pick. Glen Campbell's commercial breakthrough came by way of the title track, which was the direct precursor in production terms to 'Wichita Lineman,' and by the same writer (Jimmy Webb)." - The Capitol Years: 65-77 [Import UK] (EMI Records Ltd.) [Disc 1]-1998.
funny what an extensive use of strings was used back in some of these early recording, I love it, I have always loved strings to be incorporated in pop music.....great music,
I heard Glen do this in concert in Phoenix, AZ. He was awesome in concert and the audience loved it since we were in Phoenix. The year was about 1970. This is a good recording of the song.
If it wasn't for an infomercial, I never would've found this song. And thanks to you, I can favorite it and share with my friends, AdiCloudBoy & WiiRiketoPray. Thank You, Otaku-san. :)

@Garwood900 fair enough, i will settle for agreeing to disagree-
I do get overly worked up by this subject,
thanks, and sorry if i got too "worked up" :)

My favorite Glen Campbell song. His version tugs at my heart strings. Makes me want to cry! I love this song.

I heard Glen do this in concert in Phoenix, AZ. He was awesome in concert and the audience loved it since we were in Phoenix. The year was about 1970. This is a good recording of the song.
