I've watched this a hundred times... so fortunate to have seen all these guys through the 70's and on. All of them architypal monsters on their axes and composers that added much weight to the 'book'. I would like to think that if I was standing in front of Tony and Ron Carter... Herbie... I'd would have to burn through a couple choruses too... heh, heh... yeah, dream on, but such a great clip!
eatsleeptrumpet..hey,,man no need to apologise at all,,true stuf here, when herbie released this of course we all knew the level of trip we about to make as with all of of his offerings, and to never slight the men who chose to be with him.some tidy company you keepin,,,hope you get there fast man.oh yea, mulgrew is a homeboy being from easton pa,as me,peace &love man...
The prayer stance by Joe shows his deep reverence for the music. I wish there was more of that spirit left in jazz-in music in general, for that matter!
thankyou lawd thankyou....i'll never run out of inspiration , looking and listening to this . i pray that i'm able to play with the truth of the memory of why this expression of jazz is so intense in the first place...... ohhh .......maiden voyage....and everything leading up to this moment from the top of mt fuji, all throughout the ghettos of oakland, new orleans , detroit ect. just wow...
Henderson is Captain Cool. Herbie is in the background taking in the sites and filling the space with his amazing pianistic insight. Hubbard is the king of mean, a true jazz badass.
I love Joe Henderson praying in the background. Imagine following that solo by Freddie. Henderson, of course, is one of the greatest, but I'd be praying, too!!
Joe Henderson has inspired me so many times because he is very fluid....you know it's him and he trills, thrills and fills the space with his identifiable tone and personality. Freddie Hubbard v is for virtuoso...Modal music at its finest..ala Herbie...Tony Williams strategically places thunder and hits to move the music forward...while Mr. Ron Carter holds the rhythm and Bass is place...time is everything
freakin tony williams if you haven't heard of him u gotta check out some stuff i'm pretty sure he was just 17 on the "miles smiles" album and that ish is craaaaazy
God, Freddie was incredible... R.I.P. to him, Joe, and Tony. I play trumpet, and I always wish I could look as theatrical as he does when he plays. He plays the most beautiful things while moving around like that, and I believe it was completely natural.
Certainly true. All these men were in the zone, effortlessly oozing harmonic juicy goodness. I have almost no words to describe Freddie's solo. Incredible.
Wha? It's actually the other way around. The great Joe Henderson was one of Brecker's primer influences. Joe even stated on an interview that he didn't like the way Brecker was quoting him verbatim.
It is not so much Ron Carter's note selection as it is his touch. You may choose the right note, but can you make that note sing? Ron Carter's tone and touch are truly amazing. The rest of the band is also pretty good:)
@PhiberOptik001 PRETTY GOOD?!?!?!?!?!?!? You call Tony Williams, just PRETTY good! Pshhhhh, hahahahaha! I would not ever use pretty good with any of these. Genius is an understatement!
Great American Artists playing music that gives to the world, bring the jazz back Obama make them your cultural ambassadors, now you have future Detroit and Chicago house New york Hip Hop, spread the love not the bullets dear USA
Herbie said in an interview he thought this was the best tune he ever wrote. I love this tune but he wrote much cooler tunes I always thought. Like Dolphin Dance and Butterfly. Tell Me A Bedtime Story. Goddamn Freddie is stupendous as always. Too bad he's gone. Perfect Ensemble
listen to hoe tony williams explodes at the start of huubard's solo.... williams, hancock, and freddie hubbard know eachother inside and out, hubbard supplies the rythms in his solo that spark creativity in tony williams' drumming.... the reason I didn't enjoy joe henderson's solo as much was because he didn't give a lot ideas for the rythm section to converse with.... but the're all legends and great musicians
Of these 5 jazz giants, we still have Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter. What a performance! The jazz world lost Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard far too early. But these great musicians live on through young jazz artists who learn from recordings such as this.
I agree Becca - Jazz brilliance generally doesn't translate into a long life - Coltrane, Bill evans etc. One of my favorite Tunes perfomed by a lineup of all-time greats
Yeah it is, but we'll miss him, and it says on the back of Born to be Blue that Freddie was gonna record the most albums that anyone has done ever. Does anyone know if he has don it?
Well... when I look at his Discography of published Albums he is featured on atleast 85 albums... I think. More than Trane.. 50.. but Trane did it in 12 years. Anyway... There is no way that 85 is the most. I have 135 albums featuring Art blakey on my Itunes and I know Miles Davis has Freddie Beat by a lot. But that is a good question... What artist has recorded the most?
As Joe Henderson was playing very sparsely at the beginning and then they cut to a shot of the mountain, I got the feeling he was staring into that mountain, letting that beautiful scenery dictate the music that he should play. Timeless.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Where's this, monterey or newport? Freddies and Joe's solo's are well below their established standard of excellence.Drummer(tony w),is much to busy, lacking subtlety.A great group, but not on this occasion. Slimpauli
Thanks for posting this. I had the pleasure of being on stage in the wings at this historic moment. Fond memories of my interviews with Herbie, Joe and the mad man, Freddie Hubbard. This was truly a GIFT with the late great Joe Henderson and Tony Williams putting it down. RIP Brothers! Maiden Voyage is one of my favorite Herbie Hancock compositions. True SERENITY!!!
makes me sad, i had this recorded onto my MD player back and the day before it was stolen. such a beautiful album, probably up there with the top 10 jazz must haves.
Freddie was a talented and thoughtful player with a great sound. He was also one of the better doublers on flugelhorn. He never made it sound "fat" and out-of-tune like a lot of trumpet players who use it more for color. Joe Henderson also had tremendous skills as an improviser. No matter what the song was, or what the changes were, he had licks and phrases that fit in and sounded great. Joe and Tony, you guys are missed very much!
You know, if it weren't for some w*nks like the guy who said "motific development phrasing" people would just enjoy jazz without being cnuts about it. So many jazz musicians have the wrong attitude. Not the real guys, though. They're humble. Shut up and let us all enjoy it without reading sh*te about what you lot like!
This is truly amazing. Whoever captured this event needs to be rewarded handsomely. You can't get any better than this today! Freddie,Herbie,Ron,Joe & Tony doin it to the 10th power!!
I have to admit that this was Herbie's best years though. After/During the 80's the stuff that was released did nothing for me except force me to start Break Dancing on command... His days with Miles and on Maiden Voyage were among my all time favorite Herbie years. He is still a phenomenal player however.
Before the lip problem Freddie Hubbard was quite simply the best trumpeter. He could be fiery and then tender, tuneful and chromatic. Notice the energy of the motific development phrasing
I've watched this a hundred times... so fortunate to have seen all these guys through the 70's and on. All of them architypal monsters on their axes and composers that added much weight to the 'book'. I would like to think that if I was standing in front of Tony and Ron Carter... Herbie... An outstanding composition, recording and implementation of all of the sounds, music and instruments, of a timeless classic in jazz.
Freddie Hubbard is wonderful, Joe is awesome, Herbie provides that structure to and that style to the song.
The drummer has artistic qualities and he keeps drumming without missing or losing his place in the song.
A blend of music that is a treasure trove in contemporary times.
Thanks for the post

I have to admit that this was Herbie's best years though. After/During the 80's the stuff that was released did nothing for me except force me to start Break Dancing on command... His days with Miles and on Maiden Voyage were among my all time favorite Herbie years. He is still a phenomenal player however.

Before the lip problem Freddie Hubbard was quite simply the best trumpeter. He could be fiery and then tender, tuneful and chromatic. Notice the energy of the motific development phrasing

Was Joe praying around 4:14? That's deep!

What cool about this performance, is that everyone on stage (except for Joe Henderson) was on the original recording of Maiden Voyage w/Herbie.
