  • I've watched this a hundred times... so fortunate to have seen all these guys through the 70's and on. All of them architypal monsters on their axes and composers that added much weight to the 'book'. I would like to think that if I was standing in front of Tony and Ron Carter... Herbie... I'd would have to burn through a couple choruses too... heh, heh... yeah, dream on, but such a great clip!

  • eatsleeptrumpet..hey,,man no need to apologise at all,,true stuf here, when herbie released this of course we all knew the level of trip we about to make as with all of of his offerings, and to never slight the men who chose to be with him.some tidy company you keepin,,,hope you get there fast man.oh yea, mulgrew is a homeboy being from easton pa,as me,peace &love man...

  • Beautiful

  • perfect!

  • Looks like Herbie liked Joe's the Freedom Jazz Dance quote at 6:47.

  • @acloakwithahood Well spotted - and what an unexpected place to drop that quote. :-)

  • @acloakwithahood loved your comment !!

  • @acloakwithahood splendid catch

  • An outstanding composition, recording and implementation of all of the sounds, music and instruments, of a timeless classic in jazz.

Freddie Hubbard is wonderful, Joe is awesome, Herbie provides that structure to and that style to the song.

The drummer has artistic qualities and he keeps drumming without missing or losing his place in the song.

A blend of music that is a treasure trove in contemporary times.

    Thanks for the post

  • This video is crazy - I wish people loved jazz here in America like they do in Japan

  • The 3 dislikes are the Jonas Brothers

  • mama must be proud of joe henderson and bill russell. two greats from one roof

  • @edscottable Hey man that's funny! They do look alike.

  • The prayer stance by Joe shows his deep reverence for the music. I wish there was more of that spirit left in jazz-in music in general, for that matter!

  • @jgjazzman yeah tell me about it! All genres could use a little heart.

  • RIP, Freddie and Joe!

  • Freddie, the greatest !!!

  • Three people are going straight to hell

  • Hello God ... is this you speaking to us? I think so.

  • Freddie,Herbie & Joe pure magic !

  • Ahhhh sh*t this is beautiful Freddie & Herbie true legends !

  • Jazz at it's greatest !

  • Jazz at it's greatest !

  • thank you whoever you are that put this here - god how i needed that

  • thankyou lawd thankyou....i'll never run out of inspiration , looking and listening to this . i pray that i'm able to play with the truth of the memory of why this expression of jazz is so intense in the first place...... ohhh .......maiden voyage....and everything leading up to this moment from the top of mt fuji, all throughout the ghettos of oakland, new orleans , detroit ect. just wow...

  • love this album love freddie and joe henderson together Freddie trumpet playing is insane miles freddie and wynton are my favs

  • It's not easy to eclipse Fuji but these guys were transported by Divine Fire! Monsters all.

  • Henderson is Captain Cool. Herbie is in the background taking in the sites and filling the space with his amazing pianistic insight. Hubbard is the king of mean, a true jazz badass.

  • Freddie Hubbard one of the baddest men on trumpet. Commit all sorts of capital offences on his horn. Just nasty.

  • I love Joe Henderson praying in the background. Imagine following that solo by Freddie. Henderson, of course, is one of the greatest, but I'd be praying, too!!

  • This reminds me of why I love jazz.

  • Reverence for beautiful playing!!!!

  • Joe Henderson has inspired me so many times because he is very fluid....you know it's him and he trills, thrills and fills the space with his identifiable tone and personality. Freddie Hubbard v is for virtuoso...Modal music at its finest..ala Herbie...Tony Williams strategically places thunder and hits to move the music forward...while Mr. Ron Carter holds the rhythm and Bass is place...time is everything

  • Freddie plays and Joe prays

  • this should be distributed at schools.

  • The bassist really does look like Snoop Dogg -- QUADRIPPLE LULZ.

  • @CzarinaLace No. No he doesn't.

  • herbie was just incredible, tony williams as well, great musicians. simply inspiring

  • wow...

  • I only wish I was around at times like this to see this many greats on stage at once. I would give a million bucks to travel back to this day!!!!!

  • is joe henderson praying during freddie hubbards solo??

  • @Niggl23 He is thanking Got for that solo.

  • on drums its mister tony williams - and we have on trumpet pussy cat hubbard

  • WHY WHY,I Just want to know WHY! BECAUSE This is MUSIC!

  • Excellent!!! by all of the performers

    Who is the drummer?

  • freakin tony williams if you haven't heard of him u gotta check out some stuff i'm pretty sure he was just 17 on the "miles smiles" album and that ish is craaaaazy

  • thats a load of some truft right there boai

  • God, Freddie was incredible... R.I.P. to him, Joe, and Tony. I play trumpet, and I always wish I could look as theatrical as he does when he plays. He plays the most beautiful things while moving around like that, and I believe it was completely natural.

  • Yes. This is genius. Oh man, awesome!!!

  • RIP Freddie

  • No words can express the extreme degree of genius present in this video.

  • Certainly true. All these men were in the zone, effortlessly oozing harmonic juicy goodness. I have almost no words to describe Freddie's solo. Incredible.

  • did they have an audition for a cop show after or something?

  • @ jacopman

    YES!

  • In memorian Tony Williams and Freddie Hubbard

    god bless they !!

  • dude.... freddie didnt play the signature freddie maiden voyage lick from the original recording.....

  • INCREIBLE !!!!!

    miren a Joe rezar

  • Play those dirty notes Herbie!!!

  • Freddie is ripping out the most unreal pocket of notes..........and the deepest cat Joe is in the background praying???

God Gawd how intense of a scene is that??

    Man!! Thanks for posting this....

It blows me away everything I watch it.......

  • Hit thumbs down by accident SORRY...loved you comment.

  • man the stage must be fire proof :p

  • Sounded Brecker-ish for a second there at 8:16

  • Wha? It's actually the other way around. The great Joe Henderson was one of Brecker's primer influences. Joe even stated on an interview that he didn't like the way Brecker was quoting him verbatim.

  • It is not so much Ron Carter's note selection as it is his touch. You may choose the right note, but can you make that note sing? Ron Carter's tone and touch are truly amazing. The rest of the band is also pretty good:)

  • @PhiberOptik001 PRETTY GOOD?!?!?!?!?!?!? You call Tony Williams, just PRETTY good! Pshhhhh, hahahahaha! I would not ever use pretty good with any of these. Genius is an understatement!

  • Thank You!! I love this. especially LIVE.

  • 1 of my all time favourite songs

  • people going absolutely nuts to first couple of chords from Maiden Voyage.. 20 years later we're back to the middle ages inspite iPods.

  • Wish this stuff would be out on DVD. I guess the technique of recording was behind the technique of playing back then.

  • i love when Joe Henderson starts praying at the end of Freddie's solo.

    Such a spiritual being man...

  • I wish I was there.... Kind of sad I missed "the generation"

  • Terence Blanchard plays a Monet for sure

  • tard

  • Comment removed

  • Aside from being jazz greats, these guys are also jazz Legends. Just listen and you'll see why......

  • I know this is off the point, but anyone know what kind of trumpet is played by Terrance Blanchard? It looks rather distinctive.

  • Absolutely Heavenly!!

  • the true fuji-la jazz standard.

  • Great American Artists playing music that gives to the world, bring the jazz back Obama make them your cultural ambassadors, now you have future Detroit and Chicago house New york Hip Hop, spread the love not the bullets dear USA

  • We're kindred spirits! Peace and love from Germany/Australia.

  • How BAD is Ron Carter? Baddest in the biz.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank Goodness for uTube and Jazz Fans!! How fantastic to have these videos now!

  • anyone know what horn hubbard is playing here? strad?

  • Calicchio, I believe.

He was one of their Artists for quite some time ~

  • Hey, whatever happened to RAMSEY LEWIS'S version of "MAIDEN VOYAGE' (which is the title of the album by Lewis.

Some good tracks on that one!

  • I could do without the shots of the beach go-ers!

  • those are shots of boats- depicting the theme of the tune "Maiden Voyage"

    like a ship....on it's first trip

    think about it

  • this is awesome i wish you could post the entire concert in ten minute increments, i am spell bound,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • I'd say I miss Freddie and Joe, but they're always going to be around

    Freaking awesome...wow...

  • Herbie said in an interview he thought this was the best tune he ever wrote. I love this tune but he wrote much cooler tunes I always thought. Like Dolphin Dance and Butterfly. Tell Me A Bedtime Story. Goddamn Freddie is stupendous as always. Too bad he's gone. Perfect Ensemble

  • immortal souls.

  • So thrilling.......... more like ecstatic! RIP Freddie - you'll charm the angels.

  • Damn!!!! This video is FANTASTIC!!! God Bless them all!!!

  • listen to hoe tony williams explodes at the start of huubard's solo.... williams, hancock, and freddie hubbard know eachother inside and out, hubbard supplies the rythms in his solo that spark creativity in tony williams' drumming.... the reason I didn't enjoy joe henderson's solo as much was because he didn't give a lot ideas for the rythm section to converse with.... but the're all legends and great musicians

  • Knowlegable and sincere Fan, thank you

  • I was lucky to see Ron Carter perform at my high school last october... it was amazing despite his old age

  • RIP Freddie

  • Of these 5 jazz giants, we still have Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter. What a performance! The jazz world lost Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard far too early. But these great musicians live on through young jazz artists who learn from recordings such as this.

    -Becca

  • I agree Becca - Jazz brilliance generally doesn't translate into a long life - Coltrane, Bill evans etc. One of my favorite Tunes perfomed by a lineup of all-time greats

  • But Becca... Freddie was like 75... Thats pretty amazing for how much coke he did.

  • Freddie was 70 :(

  • That is still amazing andrewirobinson... for all that coke..

  • Yeah it is, but we'll miss him, and it says on the back of Born to be Blue that Freddie was gonna record the most albums that anyone has done ever. Does anyone know if he has don it?

  • Well... when I look at his Discography of published Albums he is featured on atleast 85 albums... I think. More than Trane.. 50.. but Trane did it in 12 years. Anyway... There is no way that 85 is the most. I have 135 albums featuring Art blakey on my Itunes and I know Miles Davis has Freddie Beat by a lot. But that is a good question... What artist has recorded the most?

  • D.E.P.

    Grandísimo Talento!

    Y por supuesto... JazzYeah!!!

  • PURE GENIUS!!! ENTIRE LINEUP!

  • R I P Freddie 12/29/2008

  • RIP Freddie, a true jazz innovator

  • As Joe Henderson was playing very sparsely at the beginning and then they cut to a shot of the mountain, I got the feeling he was staring into that mountain, letting that beautiful scenery dictate the music that he should play. Timeless.

  • Every tree has it's roots

  • Thanks for posting this. I had the pleasure of being on stage in the wings at this historic moment. Fond memories of my interviews with Herbie, Joe and the mad man, Freddie Hubbard. He's a crazy Cat...in a complimentary sense. The Mt. Fuji Jazz series was a world class event filled with aaaawesome moments and performances like this one. What a great three day outing it was. Chilling in the shadows of Mt. Fuji and enjoying the beautiful surrounding lakes with food, drinks and Jazz. Thanks again!

  • When you play real music instruments

(drums too!) in jazz and classical music there are certain passages or stretches in the music where you can get a feeling of euphoria. This set right here has me all opiated up! "The Pheromones of Music",

overtones and harmonics....this set is rife with them.

And i love reading through all the wonderful comments too!

  • These are the real hard-core jazz musicians!

I am like everyone else, we are all just blown away by this set!

    Joe Henderson......"quiet greatness".

    This is all just 'pure-d-dope'!

  • Herbie Hancock. Genius. I've been listening to him all my life. I'm only 16.

  • me too and im 17

  • me too and i'm 14

  • @pgrbeast2 Happy birthday. There's also a song with that name, but not a Hancock tune so you probably don't know it.

  • @pgrbeast2 u got dat rite!

  • @pgrbeast2

I've been listening to music since I was 3

  • disclosure: i'm weird. anyway, i have my funeral planned out- code of conduct (enforced by armed guards), the whole sha-bang. And...well...how is this germane to the incredible song playing right now? well, it is the very song that will be kicking off my funeral music program. delicious. I really can't wait to see the look on everyone's face...lol....i mean... wait.....ohhhh, i see. my mistake. muffins on the house everyone. banana-nut or woody allen?

  • superb

  • This is what music is all about! every one is really enjoying themselves good stuff

  • Joe!!!!

  • Thank You. Possibly my favorite song.

  • Amazing line-up, thanx for posting!

  • This group by all means should have banned from getting together. Too much greatness on one stage...

  • simply put - great music

  • thank the creator for the beautiful art of jazz music

  • I was checking out Joe Henderson during Freddie's great solo, it looks like he was praising God too! Imagine being in the midst of that great moment of music-making!

  • yes wasnt that wild? I was checking that out too. I was wondering if he was on some acid trip perhaps...or maybe just in the holy spirit. who knows!

  • Judging by his cool composure I'd say it's unlikely Joe Hen was high on anything but the moment! He seemed blessed to be in the midst of all that musical greatness....

  • simply put - great music

  • i seriously creamed my pants when i read the line up here.

  • the most beautiful video on youtube. i have been enlightened

  • all this make me proud to black

  • What an amazing set of players, one of my favorite songs, one of my favorite(deceased) drummers, favorite trumpet player(Freddie is so amazing) & of course Joe & Herbie. It doesn't get much better

  • Wow! 3:00 that entire trumpet solo (With the entire band)is amazing!

  • That was a freakin journey

  • Joe Henderson just totally blows me away. Check out Musing for Miles with John Scofield.Incredible album!

  • crazy japanese audience

  • beautiful scene and beautiful sounds

    followed by Joehen, unique'est' soloist.

  • For my class I'm transcribing this song. I love the melody and changes. I'm just going to toy with the rhythm to sound more like Bachata. It's for my Humanities class. We're studding art during the Trujillo age in D.R.

  • ¿Es el paraiso?

  • increible.....

  • This was truly a GIFT with the late great Joe Henderson and Tony Williams putting it down. RIP Brothers! Maiden Voyage is one of my favorite Herbie Hancock compositions. True SERENITY!!!

  • Herbie was a Monk follower ... and Amazing player.

    With this Dream Team ?

    Well ...

Nothing to say ... nothing to do ...

  • Wow. How high is Joe? I get high off of this.

  • Brilliant, all such great players.

I love the windsurfers at 5:38...

  • Comment removed

  • yes, it truly is a must-have

  • makes me sad, i had this recorded onto my MD player back and the day before it was stolen. such a beautiful album, probably up there with the top 10 jazz must haves.

  • Freddie was a talented and thoughtful player with a great sound. He was also one of the better doublers on flugelhorn. He never made it sound "fat" and out-of-tune like a lot of trumpet players who use it more for color. Joe Henderson also had tremendous skills as an improviser. No matter what the song was, or what the changes were, he had licks and phrases that fit in and sounded great. Joe and Tony, you guys are missed very much!

  • You know, if it weren't for some w*nks like the guy who said "motific development phrasing" people would just enjoy jazz without being cnuts about it. So many jazz musicians have the wrong attitude. Not the real guys, though. They're humble. Shut up and let us all enjoy it without reading sh*te about what you lot like!

  • That drummer is EXCELLENT

  • This is truly amazing. Whoever captured this event needs to be rewarded handsomely. You can't get any better than this today! Freddie,Herbie,Ron,Joe & Tony doin it to the 10th power!!

  • freddie is killin as always, but man, joe is absolutely insane

  • tony is always simply incredible

  • priceless!!!

  • How grand. One of my all time favorites. Thx for posting.

  • I have to admit that this was Herbie's best years though. After/During the 80's the stuff that was released did nothing for me except force me to start Break Dancing on command... His days with Miles and on Maiden Voyage were among my all time favorite Herbie years. He is still a phenomenal player however.

  • Before the lip problem Freddie Hubbard was quite simply the best trumpeter. He could be fiery and then tender, tuneful and chromatic. Notice the energy of the motific development phrasing

  • Freddie's gotta be one of my favorite trumpet players, he's absolutely insane.

  • Was Joe praying around 4:14? That's deep!

  • What cool about this performance, is that everyone on stage (except for Joe Henderson) was on the original recording of Maiden Voyage w/Herbie.

  • I am extremely dissapointed that the "Eye of the Hurricane" tune from this concert was removed from this website. PLEASE SOMEONE RE-POST IT!!!!

  • Freddie Hubbard, jazzmen is one of my favorites, I have several LPs. of vinyl touching when younger, thanks, a hug from Peru South America.

  • Beautiful! A Freddie fan in Peru!

    from Seattle, Wa. USA

  • Man that would be a great place to play a gig. What am I doing in this cubicial, help.

  • Thanks! Love it!

  • cool!! Thanks..
