My friend Glyn introduced you guys to me he plays guitar and sings. He definitely right when he said you are good, there are not good enough words to praise you
@cjamunch Not true, Bill was a fan of New Grass and liked all the guys. He might not could identify with them, but he respected them. He'd probably liked to had them as Bluegrass Boys.
Kinda of on a tangent, but I would like the person who posted this to let us know what the selections were that came just before and after this clip on his or her video. Both sounded kinda cool to me.
Don't know about the first one, but the second was a clip from Sam Bush's "Ice Caps: Peaks of Telluride" live record. It's a song called "Same Old River"
What a set of pipes John Cowan has. These guys are phenomenal musicians..their harmony is so tight and these guys are all great guitarists in their own right...too bad Sam Bush broke the band up, but I enjoy listening to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones still as well as John Cowan as a single artist. Thank you for posting!
I saw Bela Fleck with the Flecktones performing at a Borders a few years ago, and I asked him about NGR...he said that there were two guys in the band who won't work together anymore, but I was too polite to ask which two guys
they all look so young ive just been looking at bela flecks vids on you tube tey are great he loks a lot older now tho he does a lot of jazz stuff now with the flecktones check it out
I totally agree with SamuelGuthrie... I'd love to go back in time and see these guys again... there's never been anything like it... they truly did make magic
The musicians in this band are "musician's musicians". They have all played on other people's albums. Bela Fleck's banjo work is legendary and Sam Bush's Fiddle and mandolin are also unparalleled. Pat Flynn's originals are on the soundtrack of my whole life. And when God was handing out vocal talent, John Cowan was blessed beyond belief. I love this band. Each person brings something to their exciting sound and I only wish they still recorded their fantastic music. Bless you, NGR!!!
Curious, what is your definition of "better"? If you want to play with a Philharmonic, okay O'Connor is better. If you want to have a driven, haunting, energitic component...well i'd rather have Sam. Of course this is in contention to the fiddle - if we are talking mandolin...well Mark can just, well stay home.
Sam and Mark are each great in their own style but Rickie Simpkins is my favorite bluegrass fiddler. Apparently you haven't seen Mark O'Connor play mandolin; he is even more astonishing on guitar.
Actually, I own most everything O'Connor has done. Bush & O'Connor's work together (dual Mandolins)on Macedonia is one of my favorites of all time. Yet, I hold my OPINION on who I would rather listen to. Don't necessarily like the "who's better discussion(s)" thus my response as to the definition of "better". It is like justifying ones opinion on a desired color. Sam just puts the power of a mandolin onto the canvas, in a manner which I appreciate more. Mark and Sam are both tops in my book.
I had the good fortune of seeing this band at the Georgia Mountain Fair (in '86 I think?). They performed on "Bluegrass Day" and the traditional mountain-music crowd was mercilessly HATEFUL to them. As I sat in disbelief at the audience's reaction I was mesmerized by the powerful music they created.
best band ever,,,where have all the clips on youtube regarding new grass gone? if someone has a live show pls tell me cause I can only find the Leon Russel & New Grass video,,,
I watched this band from its beginning until it disbanded.I don't think there was ever a group with as much talent and energy....and still with a big fan base.I keep hoping they will do a nostalgia tour some day.
I saw these guys in Pilot Mountain in an old clapboad shack with about 20 wooden chairs. This was before they made it big. I loved them so much I bought the cd right then and there. ( the only time I ever had to buy it right then.)The Talent Is Amazing In Every Area, Vocals And Musical. I LOVE YOU NGR
I just love this song so much - maybe I should try to cover it sometime. Do you have another version - it was about more than 3 minutes , but they removed it :( and i can't find it anywhere now
few groups can sing and play this well. most would give their right arm to do one or the other as well but when you can sing and harmonize and you have some of the greatest pickers going/they still amaze me every time
These guys still all play each year at Telluride, and are still as exciting as they were back then (though John Cowen has thankfully lost that hairstyle).

I think it's kind of like the old country stars with their rhinestone studded suits. Think 'Porter Wagoner'.
He just decided to put the rhinestones on a tee shirt, that's all.

These guys brought the hippie feel into bluegrass music. They enthralled me then as they still do today.

John had the greatest voice and the best hair in bluegrass. NGR totally ROCKS.

LOL. John still has the greatest voice in bluegrass but (un)fortunately the Farrah Fawcett locks have gone out of style.

He doesn't have a Fawcett doo.
I'll have you know, Farrah Fawcett HAD WINGS.

Pretty sure it was Pat & Sam, but they seem to have reconciled, as the entire group played together at the last Merlefest.
