This is very useful. But I found that it worked with firefox and MO word. But it shows boxs in IE8 and chrome.

₹ it comes as a square in fonts other than rupee foradian... all the existing fonts need to be inserted with the unicode...

Download the Rupee Foradian Standard fonts

Type the following command in terminal window

xmodmap -e "keycode 49 = U20b9 grave"

Now you can use the grave accent key to get the Rupee Symbol.
