RPG stories are either horrible, or exactly the same. In the defense of their creators, most of the time that is exactly what the consumer wants. The same game over and over that is. You should be able to skip the CG in all of them.
While some Americans can't stand "annoying" Japanese characters, they may also not realize that in Japan, it's popular to make characters to do extra Moe or cute (w/ overreactions) styled movements, expressions, and so on. Take a look at Final Fantasy XIII, on the surface it looks like a decent game but the gameplay is just terrible and feels like the game is playing itself for you as you watch it and run down the longest video game hallway ever imagined.
It's truly a cultural phenomenon where the Japanese received the game very well while In the states it's either a LOVE or HATE relationship. Even if it had the best storyline ever, the gameplay and variety is too simplified to enjoy the game.
As for Star Ocean, I am a fan of the series but have a soft spot for Star Ocean: Second Evolution (The Second Story), which is also one of my favorite RPG's as well, when RPG's were better back in the day.
I've logged over 130 hours into the game so far. Overall, it's a great game, but lacks some of the things I loved in Star Ocean 2: The Second Story. Item creation is a chore, a severe one at that. There is 0 chance of failure too. The battles can get utterly intense though, and some of the bosses are utterly insane...like SO2. Gabriel...good lord was he hard.
Does star ocean the last hope have a better story then Star Ocean Till the End of Time? I liked the plot twist and the concept of TTEOT but by the sound of the story in the last hope the game takes place before TTEOT right?
@AkumaADemoncus it's nowhere near as good as star ocean 3. its pretty decent thought. and yes, so3 takes place in SD 772 while this one takes place in SD 10

@omejep if you have Star Ocean: The Last hope -International- (25 bucks at gamestop) you can get it with an anime theme character main menu and Japanese voices (with English subtitles) but it's PS3 exclusive, though it's worth the extra 5 bucks, voice acting SUCKED in English, so happy i got international ^_^
To anyone who is considering this game, this review is pretty accurate. I've played about 5 hours of it, and the game is very interesting, despite it having some occasional bad voice acting, and an annoying character here and there, it's definitely worth a buy.
tho the cutscenes are long.. they look good, and as for fun while playing... i must say i enjoy this waaaay better then ff13... they kinda messed it up... its like cutscenes every 3 to 5 minutes
I recognized Reimi's voice over right when I heard it. She's voiced by Laura Bailey. She has been in a bunch of games and anime - one of which is Keiko in Yu Yu Hakusho; one of the best animes out there.
I like the wacky dialog with welch it just added some at least funny parts to the game.

I've bought this game and I've played it for about 5 hours total.
Just wondering if it has much depth to it, I mean, does it expand much from where you start off, of course you'll get more skills and stuff like that, but does the gameplay have a fair amount of depth?

It's quite funny, because the worst character (Welch) also voice acted Reimi and Dominica, Svala, Faina and Leif from Infinite Undiscovery. No wonder most of Tri-Ace's voice characters are bad, mainly because she voice acted a lot of characters haha. Tbh though Reimi isn't AS bad as the others, that's one of the characters she voiced well, ish.

@leongds Yeah, Reimi has probably one of the best voices in the game, Sarah's meant to sound like that I think, but she SO gets on my nerves. Luckily I removed her from my final party (I replaced her with Myuria - who actually has a good voice actress.) Sarah shouting "LIGHTNINNNG BLASSSSTTTTTTT" and "RESSURECCTIONNN" really gets on my nerves, at least Myuria speaks like a normal person >.<
You should really play the first three Star Ocean games. They are amazing. I have to say that I didn't like Star Ocean IV though. Yes, it has an awesome combat system, but so do the first three games... especially the third installment. An awesome battle system is expected. The other installments have fluid controls, better dialogue, far seuperior dungeon and world design, and MUCH better protagonists. Star Ocean IV's graphics are very miss and hit. Some areas look amazing, others awful.

@xjoey77 Did you skip the battle simulator in the beginning? I had a hard time with combat initially as well because I skipped some of it. You can go back to your ship and do the whole simulator. Do it, it'll teach you how to play properly.
@xjoey77 omg this game isnt that hard, only if you choose to. First, what difficulty set you choosed? Did you read battle tips? Do you equip new weapons or armor? Do you fight once in a while so you can keep leveling or you run from every fight?
@leongds actually I figured out how to play it and I like it a lot now. Now the problem that I have is that I have a 60 gb model and it freeses the game. I'll get a slim one just to play it.
I own this game, but haven't gotten to playing it yet and holy mother of god, forty minute cut scenes?! My jaw dropped when you said that. I don't know whether to be excited that there will be a lot of story or just frustrated that I'm not playing.
Seems like a few people continuously bash on ZGR saying he hates the games whilst in the videos he actually praises them in many aspects (while pointing out the shortcomings). Some of you should actually pay attention to the vids instead of thinking about what trolling comments you could post.

@AntiFanBoy1 Look at the date this was uploaded. Star Ocean came out only for the Xbox a year before it came to the PS3. So at the time of this review, it did not exist for the PS3. Note, I also released a review of the PS3 version when it was released.

I've bought this game and I've played it for about 5 hours total.
Just wondering if it has much depth to it, I mean, does it expand much from where you start off, of course you'll get more skills and stuff like that, but does the gameplay have a fair amount of depth?

does anyone own this game? i need to borrow a copy, i baught it from gamestop and they wont let me return it because they are claiming that crack in the disk wasnt there before so i am stuck with it not working (its the first disk.) so i am wondering if someone could lend me thier copy so i can get the disks downloaded? it still reads so i can play it so i dont need to keep it i just need to download it.

It's quite funny, because the worst character (Welch) also voice acted Reimi and Dominica, Svala, Faina and Leif from Infinite Undiscovery. No wonder most of Tri-Ace's voice characters are bad, mainly because she voice acted a lot of characters haha. Tbh though Reimi isn't AS bad as the others, that's one of the characters she voiced well, ish.

@leongds Yeah, Reimi has probably one of the best voices in the game, Sarah's meant to sound like that I think, but she SO gets on my nerves. Luckily I removed her from my final party (I replaced her with Myuria - who actually has a good voice actress.) Sarah shouting "LIGHTNINNNG BLASSSSTTTTTTT" and "RESSURECCTIONNN" really gets on my nerves, at least Myuria speaks like a normal person >.<

You should really play the first three Star Ocean games. They are amazing. I have to say that I didn't like Star Ocean IV though. Yes, it has an awesome combat system, but so do the first three games... especially the third installment. An awesome battle system is expected. The other installments have fluid controls, better dialogue, far seuperior dungeon and world design, and MUCH better protagonists. Star Ocean IV's graphics are very miss and hit. Some areas look amazing, others awful.

It's a sweet game !! only picked it up last week ..£5 in Blockbusters..bargin !!! graphics are beautifull...love Merry " level up !" only 14 hrs in...lots more to go i hope..yup the combat system gets better as you progress.. ^_^

@xjoey77 Did you skip the battle simulator in the beginning? I had a hard time with combat initially as well because I skipped some of it. You can go back to your ship and do the whole simulator. Do it, it'll teach you how to play properly.

@xjoey77 omg this game isnt that hard, only if you choose to. First, what difficulty set you choosed? Did you read battle tips? Do you equip new weapons or armor? Do you fight once in a while so you can keep leveling or you run from every fight?

@leongds actually I figured out how to play it and I like it a lot now. Now the problem that I have is that I have a 60 gb model and it freeses the game. I'll get a slim one just to play it.

I love this game. Battles are awesome. The story was pretty cool, especially when they go to the alternate earth and it ends up........yeah.
I also love how you can rename all the characters. I renamed some of the characters with Star Trek names. I renamed Faize to Spock and Edge to Kirk =D

@AntiFanBoy1 Look at the date this was uploaded. Star Ocean came out only for the Xbox a year before it came to the PS3. So at the time of this review, it did not exist for the PS3. Note, I also released a review of the PS3 version when it was released.
